Driggs Dragons: Summer 2021 The new school year starts on August 16 (August 19 for new kindergartners). If you want to keep up on your skills over the summer, our teachers have a few suggestions of things to work on. Before 1st Grade: Subtracting using regrouping Add and subtract single-digit numbers Math facts Check pencil grip Review sight words from kindergarten Before 4th Grade: Blending 3-letter words Multiplication and division facts (up to 12s) Read non-fiction Before 2nd Grade: Practice retelling after reading: who, what, Read aloud 20 minutes daily to an adult when, where, why Keep a summer journal Practice addition and subtraction facts daily Before 5th Grade: See the 5th grade packet Watch for a page to come home with all of your student’s logins to continue using math, language, and reading websites through the school. Make sure you keep up with Driggs information: Follow us on Instagram: @driggs.elementary. Watch for school emails from Mr. Ben Peters or Tanya Sargent. Join MemberHub, which is how our PTA communicates. Go to https://driggs.memberhub.com/join/z0ngp9 to get started. Registration will be all online this year. You’ll get more instructions this summer in the mail, so make sure your address is up-to-date with the office. Put Back to School night on your calendar for the evening of August 12 to meet your new teachers and sign up for volunteer opportunities.
We’ve attached a few things: 1. A bookmark for Sora, the district’s library app where kids can access books digitally 2. A helpful guide from Mrs. Fullmer, our school librarian, about summer reading contests 3. A list of other books to read and love, suggested by teachers, staff, and PTA. We hope you will enjoy getting out more with your family. Some of our favorite Driggs family field trips include Hogle Zoo, Tracy Aviary, Loveland Aquarium, Red Butte Gardens, Eccles Dinosaur Park, the Natural History Museum of Utah, Clark Planetarium, and Discovery Gateway Children’s Museum. Don’t forget that lots of regular things practice important skills, too! Baking is math and science. A garden is a hands-on science lab. Let your kids create, get messy, and explore with you. Thank you for supporting our school during this wild and crazy year. We could not have done it without your help. We learned new ways and made it through, thanks to you. Liz Shellum, PTA President
To read or not to read…not even a question! My name is Mrs. Fullmer and I love being the librarian at Driggs. A quote by Neil Gaiman, “The simplest way to make sure we raise literate children is…to show them that reading is a pleasurable activity, and that means finding books that they enjoy, giving them access to those books, and letting them read them.” It is my hope that Driggs Dragons will read all summer long. Here are some ideas that will help encourage reading. 1. The Salt Lake County Summer Reading Challenge Tails and Tales Challenge June 1-July 31 www.slcolibrary.org/summer-reading/summer-reading-2021 2. Barnes & Noble Summer Reading Journal Pick up forms at Barnes & Noble 3. Epic (online reading) 4. World Book Online 5. Sora (soraapp.com) students can read online using their student number 6. Read & Win summer Reading Challenge-through the Utah State Fair (free child admission, coupon for free ride, yellow slide ride and one free drink) Info and form can be downloaded. “Reading should not be presented to children as a chore, a duty. It should be offered as a gift.” Charles Scribner Jr Look at the book CHALK by Bill Thomson and then have the children draw with chalk on the sidewalk. Check out the Who Would Win?
