Upbeat Newsletter Winter, 2014 “Music that brings the community together every summer.” Dr. Pam Nave, Purdue University Department of Bands Faculty By Beth Purkhiser Percussion, and our Lafayette Citizen Band’s Percussion Section Leader was born! As her parents watched their daughter’s destruction of her gift, they realized she must be gifted and immediately contacted local percussion instructor, John McMahon. They had to beg him to accept her as a student because he didn’t accept girl students!!! Little did he know at the time that this girl would grow up to be the only female drumline instructor at a major university in the entire nation. Pam recalls that John was a “rough” teacher, swatting the back of her head any time she made a mistake. She started studying snare when she was 9, and by the time she was 11, she was studying with three different Dr. Pam Nave teachers - timpani with one, and drum set with another. She figured that was When Pam Nave was three years old, her perfectly normal. Her parents never had parents bought her a Scooby-Doo drum to force her to practice. I started to set. Instead of rocking out as one might wonder what it must have been like to expect, she punctured the paper drum live with someone practicing for three heads with a pencil, and became different percussion lessons a week fascinated by the “cool sounds” she when she mentioned that her family had could make that way. When she sees right Board Members angles, she just automatically starts At-Large counting them. So computer fonts are Matthew Baldwin somewhat difficult to read, and marimba Margaret Bertucci is challenging to play. (Note to self: stop Matt Conaway wearing plaid around Pam.) Her dad and Ishbah Cox one of her teachers, Dr. Mueller, signed Lewis Day her up for college anyway, and she Bob DeBonte ended up going to Ball State. Here she Michael Eddy started practicing 8-10 hours a day and Paula Jones fell in love it. After her undergrad Mark Lillianfeld degree, she started gigging and set up a Wesley Love studio in Noblesville which was fairly Dr. Pam Nave successful, but she got tired of having no Joe Newlin Beth Purkhiser insurance or security, so she headed Rod Ray back to Ball State with a teaching Tom Schmidt assistantship for her Masters. She ended up getting two Masters Degrees, one in Ex-Officio Student Teaching and the other in Music Education. She might count corners, but Sheila Klinker she certainly doesn’t cut them - next up Tony Roswarski was her Ph.D. She accepted a full ride scholarship to Ohio State with a teaching Staff assistantship to get her DMA. Finishing in a mere 3 years was a Herculean feat William D. Kisinger, Musical Director considering this included 4 recitals and a full length dissertation. While she was Brenda Hohman, Executive Director there, she won Ohio State’s prestigious Concerto Competition. Beth Purkhiser, Pam was teaching a drum line in Personnel Manager Kentucky when she received a message that Dave Leppla wanted her to give him Newsletter Editor a call at Purdue.
