By Ryan Cannon sensory and emotional experience associated with, or resembling that associated with, actual or potential tissue damage.” The sensation humans are familiar with begins in a nerve ending known as anociceptor, which sends signals to your spinal cord and brain. Pain perception in this manner has been identified in vertebrates from mammals and birds to fish. If you’ve ever accidentally stepped on a dog’s paw, you’ve probably noticed (and heard!) a familiar pain response—along with your own sense of guilt. While plants can respond to Photo by cottonbro from Pexels stimuli—by leaning toward light, for example—they don’t possess nociceptors, spinal cords, or brains to sense pain. That’s all I need to conclude that plants don’t feel pain. A more interesting consideration is that of animals’ emotional lives. I posit that animals, including humans, experience emotion in a similar way, while plants have no ability to do so (for the same reason that they cannot experience pain). Historically, scientists have viewed non-human animals as simple organisms mindlessly responding to stimuli. However, recent research in the field of ethology (the biological study of animal behaviour) has begun to uncover their complex emotional world. Chimpanzees, for instance, not only greet each other, but also bid farewell. They are known to take care of their elderly who can no longer fend for themselves. Chimps are known for their intellect. applications, phone calls, video interviews, and virtual home visits. I was thrilled when, after spending hours on various applications, I finally heard from one organization. I was determined to be a good match for a particularly sweet dog named Hermes, awaiting a flight to Toronto from Egypt, where he had been rescued from the streets of Cairo. Finally driving to Pearson airport in mid- December to pick him up in his airplane crate was an emotional moment for me, knowing that Hermes had just endured a marathon trip without knowing where he was going. But he took it like a champ, and soon after we got home, he quickly endeared himself to me and my family with his calm and gentle demeanour. The adoption process taught me some great lessons. I learned I am more flexible as a pet owner than I’d initially thought. My search began with quite specific guidelines for the type of dog I was interested in, but with little success, I gradually expanded my narrow focus to include more broad attributes. Looking back, Hermes is certainly different in several ways from the theoretical “ideal” dog I’d initially searched for, in characteristics such as size, age, and propensity to shed (he’s a real shedder!). Features I once thought were a must now seem incredibly arbitrary. There is no such thing as a perfect pet, as all animals (including humans) have their own personalities, quirks and all. I now appreciate more than ever that, as prospective adopters, we need to be as flexible as possible, to give as many animals as possible a second chance in life. That’s why most of us choose to adopt in the first place. Lessons Learned I also recognize that even though it has only been a few months, from Adopting the bond I’ve developed with Hermes has already helped to strengthen my commitment to my vegan lifestyle. It reminds me of how I felt years ago after reading the book Esther The Wonder Hermes Pig, which relates the shift in a family toward a life dedicated to animal welfare as a result of the relationship they develop with their pet pig. Regardless of species, humans and animals co-exist on Earth, all searching to live the lives they are born into to the fullest. It makes sense that my respect and affection for my dog E By Mark Monachino should extend equally to all other animals on the planet, and that I would want to live my life in support of this perspective. ver since I finished school and moved to Toronto in 2015, I knew I wanted a dog in my life. As a child, I was lucky to have the opportunity to care for several pets. Since then, it had always seemed that my life circumstances made the prospect of dog ownership too challenging. That was until late last year, when I found myself working from home for the foreseeable future, and had expanded my living space from my small downtown condo. I then realized it might be the perfect time to pursue my desire to care for a dog. So, in the autumn of 2020, I began searching for the dog of my dreams. Having heard beautiful stories of rescued dogs, I knew adoption was the route I wanted to take. I quickly learned, however, that it’s a surprisingly lengthy process, with rescue I can tell already that my time with Hermes is destined for agencies and shelters receiving unprecedented interest from adventure, joy, excitement, and of course a ton of learning (for prospective owners. It turns out that finding the best home for both of us!). My VEGAN STORY By Neil Stokes, from Stokes Cheese How old were you when you went vegan, and why did you make that choice? I was a 55-year-old devout meat-and-potato-consuming retired police detective when I went vegan. My wife was vegan three years ahead of me and, through her journey, I learned so much about the detrimental impacts of consuming animal products.
