History History Black Beauties Steiff commemorates the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic Historical events, myths and legends certainly had an effect on the Teddy bear and without doubt influenced designs and trends. One particular event in our history, albeit tragic, was to result in the design of a Steiff bear that has now become one of the most highly desired bears in the world. The Event RMS Titanic, property of White Star Corporation, was built in Belfast by Harland & Wolff Shipbuilders. She was, at the time, the largest moving object ever created by man. She was also one of the most lavishly appointed ships ever built. More than just a ship, Titanic was a virtual floating palace; more of a hotel than an ocean liner. Advertised by White Star as the ‘largest and finest steamer of the world’. Shipbuilders’ magazine claimed the ship was “practically unsinkable”. April 10, 1912 – Southampton. Sailing day for Titanic, and excited passengers arrive at the White Star docks to board the magnificent ship. She casts off to depart on her maiden voyage promptly at noon. This maiden voyage was to become Captain Edward J. Smith’s last command as he planned to retire upon returning to England. April 14, 1912 – 11.40pm. The crow’s nest bell rings three times on the bridge. “Iceberg ahead!” The telephone is answered by Sixth Officer Moody, who hears the urgent warning “Iceberg ahead!” A spur of ice, hidden beneath the surface, bumped and scraped the starboard of the ship. Captain Smith, upon learning of the collision, inspected his ship and realised that it was only a case of time before his Titanic was doomed and that half the people on board were under a death sentence. Why? Insufficient lifeboats and below freezing seawater temperature. At 12.45 the first lifeboat is launched, by 1.15 the tilt on the deck was growing steeper. At 2.05 the last lifeboat is launched. At 2.17 the last distress signal is sent by Titanic making her one of the first ships in history to send the new “SOS” distress call. At 2.18 the lights blink once and then go out for good. Of more than At 2.20 the stern section tilts in a perpendicular position 2,230 passengers and leaving over 2,000 people struggling for survival. Of more crew on board only than 2,230 passengers and crew on board only 705 survived 705 survived and over and over 1,500 people lost their lives. 1,500 people lost their lives. This tragic event left England a country in mourning. Steiff, wishing to pay their respects to England, that very same year in 1912 produced a black ‘mourning’ bear exclusively for the English market. Less than 500 of these ‘mourning’ bears were produced exclusively for England in the year of sadness. Consequently, today fine examples of this beautiful black Steiff bear command extremely high prices at auction. ... 14 15
