We would like to take this opportunity to thank Michelle O'Brien, Yvonne O'Brien and Sheila Clifford for the time they gave to the Resource Centre and their hard work. Urgent Social Housing Concerns The lack of social housing and rental properties in Sneem is an ongoing issue of grave concern to our small community. Sneem f amilies are being off ered social housing in Kenmare with the subsequent loss of children to our crèche, school, GAA, rowing club, etc. One f amily has already moved to Kenmare wit h the loss of 2 children to our school and clubs. If any councillor calls to your door, please raise this i ssue with them. If any of your friends or relations have an empty house in Sneem, see if they will make it available. For f urther inf or- mation, please contact Julie Knightly, Joe Murphy, Vincent O’Leary or Jim O’Sullivan of Sneem Housing Group. Page 4
Sneem Community Preschool and Crèche The Cow Dung Lotto took place on Friday 12th April 2019 and the lucky winner was Shane O’Sullivan. It has been a wonderf ul and successf ul year f or us. We have been supported by so many members of the community to continue the essential work of the Ser- vice in a rural area. Generous donations have been received f rom so many: The Sneem Parish Newsletter, Strictly Come Dancing, Sneem Resource Centre, KIDZ Club, Kerry Way Ultra, Sneem Football Club, Couch to 5km, Rosen Choir, Rowing Club, Storytelling Festival and many individual donations, as well as your support at Bake Sales, Church Gate collections, Raff les and Ham- pers. We have been overwhelmed by the community support over the last f ew years. We wish to say thank you to Kate, Triona, Rosalie, Karina and Catherine for their commitment. They have made a positive impact on so many children in our community and it is reassuring to know that our children are cared f or by capable, enthusiastic and devoted staff. In October of this year the National Childcare Scheme (NCS) has many positive implications for parents in our communities, particularly f or children in our early years’ service and for children of primary preschool age. This means that par- ents can avail of subsidised childcare for children f rom 0-5 years and af ter school care f or primary school children. In order to avail of the opportunity par- ents must be registered with the NCS bef ore October 2019. We are hosting two nights in the area to explain the new programme and the registration process. In Sneem P reschool on Friday May 24th 5.30pm-6.30pm and in Castlecove Mon- day the 27th 7.30 to 8.30pm at Bake My Day. You can also contact Kate at the Crec he 064 6645551 or sneemcrec he@gmail.com. Sneem Digital Hub Sneem New York Night Saturday 27th April A group representing the Sneem Digital Hub travelled to New York for the weekend 26th to 29th April to host a f und- raising night of Music, Story and Dance with f riends of Sneem in the Central Bar on 109 E ast, on 9th Street in Manhattan. Up to 80 people were present; as well as New York residents, people travelled f rom Boston, New Jersey, Philadelphia and Connecticut to support the event. Batt Burns and John V O’Sullivan outlined the progress of the Digital Hub to date, and that the reason f or crossing the Atlantic was to raise (match) f unding which was a require- ment f or the drawdown of grants f rom the various state agencies. The total cost is €500K, our contribution is €150K and to date we have raised €100K. The gross take in New York was US $20K. This was a very helpf ul contribution towards meeting our target, and we are very gratef ul to our US f riends for their support. We also outlined the possibility of those who have emigrated returning home, especially people with IT skills. There are a f ew International compa- nies who have expressed an interest in our proposals to them and are presently exploring the implications for their organisations of having remote workers employed by them. We, the committee, wish to sincerely thank Jimmy Tuohy and Giles Cooper (natives of Kenmare) who gave us the venue and abundanc e of food platters, enough to f eed a small army, f ree of charge. We are sincerely gratef ul to them for their generosity. Both Jimmy and Giles are two of the most successf ul busi- nessmen who emigrated to New York f rom these parts and they have many business interests in pub ownerships and construction. Page 6
Sneem Digital Hub We also wish to acknowledge the help in organising the event in New York f rom J.J. O’Sullivan, Sarah Riney, Mary O’Sullivan (E uge Dineen’s wif e), Declan Cole, who was our IT expert on the night and Denis O’Carroll f rom Waterville. Denis advised us on how to conduct the auction, and acted as the auctioneer on the night. Denis is resident in Florida, and is the operator of a golf and tour promotions company. We are very gratef ul for the valuable prizes received f rom hotel owners, golf course green f ees, All Ireland f ootball tickets, trips to the Skelligs, International Rugby tickets, etc. Please look up galabid/auction/Kerry.com to view the list of vouchers or www.sneemdigitalhub.ie or f acebook for what is on off er. Finally to all those who attended and gave very valued f inancial contributions and indeed to those that could not attend on the night but sent on contributions - Go raibh mile maith agaibh. Representative: Joe Murphy. Summer Season As the summer f ast approaches we would like to wish all the businesses in the parish a very successf ul summer season. As you are all aware there are some new businesses opened since last summer we would like to wish them all well. It is great to see all business premises opened as each business adds to the vitali- ty of the village. As most of you are also aware Sneem was named as one of the top ten places in Ireland to visit in 2018 by Trip Adviser. This was a tremendous achievement and honour to everyone in the parish who deal in the tourism or hospitality area. We encourage businesses to use this to f urther promote their own business and the village going forward. Parking Sneem Village On two occasions last summer Sneem Develop- ment carried out a count on all traff ic that passed Traffic Survey through the village f rom 7.30am to 7.30pm. As Summer 2018 can be seen f rom this we are very lucky to have Results per day: this f low of traff ic going through our village. We are Cars 2300 doing our best to promote new amenities as can Large Coaches 47 be seen at present we are in the process of devel- Smaller Coaches 32 oping a Crazy Golf amenity up at the GAA Motor Homes 70 grounds. We work hard to keep the greens, river Motorbike s 49 walks, street f urniture etc. in good condition. We Walkers 30 would like to ask or suggest to all business and residents living in the village, f irst of all to consider parking your car off the main street f rom 10am to 5pm during the summer months. There is plenty of parking at the rear of the bottle bank, community car park, in Seaview or at the back of Dan Galvin’s. Please ask all staff to do the same. One car parked on the street for 6 hours is at minimum denying parking to at least 10 potential customers. Secondly, we ask all businesses to limit the amount of street f urniture in f ront of their premises. If the trend that presently exists continues to expand, there will be no parking for customers. Would it be too much to ask that each business leave the parking for one car outside their premises? Everyone at some stage has driven through Adare or Mac room and may have wished to stop for a coff ee or tea, but with no place to park you move on to the next town. Please don’t let Sneem be like that. We are also sure you can all remember what happened in Kenmare where all street f urniture was removed f rom the street when it became a health and saf ety concern. Don’t let your business be the one that causes this. Wishing everyone a healthy and successf ul summer. Page 8

The 15th Kerry Sneem Scouts Group 15th Kerry have had a v ery busy and productive month. Our Scouts competed at a County Camp in Cronin’s Yard on Carraun- toohil. They were split up into 2 patrols where they set up a camp, built tables f rom logs and rope, built off the ground cooking f ires and built an array of accessories without any adult assistance. They excelled at some of the activities including orienteering, land raf ting and f irst aid challenges. As well as cooking all their own f ood for the camp they entered a Master Chef contest where such delicacies as bbq ribs, chick pea curry and naan bread were prepared and cooked f rom scratch. We are very proud of what Drying socks at the Cubs 3 day camp they achieved and one even was given best Scout award at the camp. Our Cubs had a f antastic 3 day camp in an incredibly scenic site on the way up to the Lost Valley. This was a 30 minute hike f rom the nearest road so needed a lot of logistics to build the base camp f rom where they did lots of hiking and outdoor activities. They built a swimming pool by creating a damn and clearing lots of rock f rom the base of a river. They cooked lots of delicious meals and created knot boards, dream catchers and whittled a large number of sticks into cooking utensils, walking sticks and an array of pointing devices. Our Beav ers visited the Cub camp on one of Cub s Camp and Lost Valley Hike the days, where they did a Lost Valley hike and cooked the obligatory sausages and marshmallows on the camp f ire. We also invested into the group two new Beavers af - ter they learned the basics of what Scouts is about. Welcome to the 15th Kerry Sneem Scouts f amily. We are in our f inal term in the Scout year but if anyone is thinking about joining the group it is a good time to come and talk to us about some of the activities we do and how these can bring great conf idence and lif e skills to our youth (and adult) members. Next intake Very proud of our Scouts competing at County Camp will be September but best to get in touch sooner rather than later as we have limited space in some of the sections. Page 10

Beavers Lost Valley Hike Sneem Walking Club Fantastic weather on Sunday 5th May 2019 provided both Group A and Group B of Sneem Walking Club with awesome 360 degree views of our beautif ul peninsula and across Kenmare Bay. Group A's walk was at Mullaghanattin (pictured right), a peak of the Dunkerron Moun- tains, which took approximately 4 hours. Group B tackled the Lomanagh Loop walk (pictured below), which took approximately 3 hours. It was a glorious day. From May the walks move to once a month (until September) as a lot of the walkers are busy with other summer activities and seasonal work but we may int roduce some evening walks. As always updates can be f ound on Sneem Walking Club Facebook page, Sneem Walking Club Website, Sneem Community Notice Board or by calling Club Secretary Dave Fay on 087 6266214. 50th Anniversary of De Gaulle Visit De Gaulle - A Quiet Holiday In April 1969, President De Gaulle announced his inten- tion of retiring f rom the French presidency having lost a constitutional ref erendum. Wishing to escape the media and political uproar created by his decision, as well as by the electoral campaign for his successor, on May 10th, President de Gaulle, his wif e and his aide de camp, Admiral Francois Flohic, were f lown on a ministe- rial plane by the French Air Force to Ireland. If De Gaulle chose Ireland, it is, according to Pierre Bitard, f ormer diplomatic advisor to the French Embassy, ‘because he could not, f rom his point of view, go anywhere but to a neutral country’. Furthermore, President De Gaulle’s mother was the descendent of Irish ancestors, the McCart ans, Jacobite emi- grants to France after the Glorious Revolution, the overthrow of James II of England and Ireland in 1668. As soon as he arrived in Cork, President De Gaulle understood that behaving like normal tourists would not be possible even though the search f or accommo- dation in the Heron’s Cove Hotel, near Sneem in Co.Kerry, had been carried out with the utmost discretion by the envoy of the French Embassy. But getting off the plane who was there to greet the General but none other than Jack Lynch, An Taoiseach, with a cheerf ul ‘Welcome home!’. As for President Éamon De Valera, he declared: “I am sure that our people will be delighted that General de Gaulle has chosen our country f or his private holiday. We hope that his stay will be pleasant and that everything will go according to his wishes, especially re- garding his desire for anonymity”. Padraig and Joan Kennelly, founders of a small photographic studio in Tralee, followed the trail of this noted visitor and recorded the excitement caused amongst the inhabitants of Sneem. They called their collection “A Quiet Holi- day”. This photographic exhibition is now proudly on exhibition at Sneem Hotel. French Documentary Do YOU have an interesting tale to tell about de Gaulle’s visit here in 1969? If so, we’d love to hear f rom you. Contact Nicola Duggan at Sneem Hotel 064 6675100. A French television crew will be visiting here in mid-May to make a documentary on the General’s stay here and they would be happy to interview you for inclusion in in a documentary to be screened on French TV in October. Anniversary Celebrations In 1994, we celebrated the 25th anniversary of the visit and installed the De Gaulle monument in the North Square green to much f anf are. This year (besides the above) we plan to celebrate the 50t h anniversary by welcoming 60 Frenc h Gaullist senators to Sneem on 7th June. They will f ollow in the f ootsteps of de Gaulle by visiting Derrynane House and Strand, revisiting the f amed de Gaulle walk, Reen-na-Furraha, Parknasilla Hotel, Sneem Hotel, Heron’s Cove, and the De Gaulle monument where t hey will lay a wreath. We will hold a Gala Dinner in the Sacre Coeur that evening. Alas, our visitors will not be in attend- ance as they will have departed for Connemara via Killarney at 6pm. Neverthe- less, it should be an enjoyable French-themed evening for locals and expatriate Frenc h alike. Page 12

Tahilla School News First Holy Communion Congratulations to Emma Sugrue who received her First Holy Communion at St. Patrick’s Church on Sunday May 12th. Thank you to everyone who helped make the occasion so special. National Spring Clean 2019 We participated in An Taisce’s Nation- al Spring Clean on Friday the 12th April. We cleaned up the school yard, the approach roads, the car park, the church grounds and the roadsides to- wards the pier. It was a great success and we enjoyed seeing our local area clean and f ree f rom litter. We enjoyed a great Easter Egg Hunt when we re- turned. Cycling Safety Training Course The pupils recently completed a very worthwhile and enjoyable training course which was held over f our Monday af - ternoons at the school. The course is aligned to Cycle Right, the National Standard for Cycle Saf ety Training in Ireland, and is delivered by qualif ied trainers f rom the national reg- ister. The sessions teach pupils saf e cycling techniques and also introduce them to an invaluable and inexpensive form of exercise at a time when lack of exercise is a cause for concern. During the f inal session the pupils cy- cled to the pier and back, putting all their knowledge of cycling into prac- tice. Active Schools Week This week is our annual Active Schools Week and among the planned activities are: walk a mile a day, Skipathon, park and stride, walk the Kerry Way to Sneem and yoga. National Walk to School Week Students f rom Green-Schools all over Ireland came together during National Walk to School Week May 13th to 17th 2019, to show their support for a greener, healthier environment by encouraging pupils, parents and teachers to walk to school wherever possible. Tahilla School News Our World Irish Aid Awards We were delighted to learn that our project submitted to the Our World Irish Aid Awards has been chosen as a regional f inalist! We are invited to an awards cer- emony at the Triskel Arts Centre, Cork and will be presented with a special plaque on Thursday May 16th. Our project explored Global Goal 13, Climate Change and how sustainable travel can help mitigate the eff ects of climate change. Our small steps to leave no one behind, and our spreading of the sus- tainable travel message on St. Patrick’s Day impressed the judges. We are rais- ing awareness and improving education of human capacity on climate change mitigation through promoting smarter and sustainable travel. Our World Awards is an annual awards programme for Irish pupils where pupils present a project exploring the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the work of Irish Aid. The Awards help Irish pupils and to understand the links between their lives and the lives of children and their f amilies in developing countries. Taking part in the A wards gives primary school pupils a wonderf ul opportunity to explore development topics and the work of Irish Aid. This is the fourteenth year of the Awards and this year's theme is "Leave No One Behind", which asks teachers and pupils nationwide to think about how they can trans- form the world through the UN Global Goals for Sustainable Development. Looking for Relatives Dear Sneem residents, Hi, My name is Deneen Curran Waddell. I plan on traveling to Sneem, hopef ully this summer, possibly June 25-July 1 but I am f lexible, to look up my relatives. My grandf ather was Patrick Curran, his parents were Julia, (Leary) and Patrick Curran. My grandf ather Patrick’s siblings are Hannah, Abigail (Curran) Mc Car- thy, (they had son Daniel), Denis, and Mollie. I hope to meet John Crowley, who is my cousin, son of Mollie (Curran) and Peter Crowley. I am told this is the “old” Curran f amily. Abby moved to England with her daughters. Does anyone know anything about them? Denis was married but no record of to whom and whether they had children. We have done f amily tree research which is why I am look- ing forward to visiting beautif ul Sneem - the birthplace of many generations of my f amily. I plan on visiting the church where they were baptized, cemeteries, and talk to locals who may have knowledge of my f amily. My f ather, Dennis Curran, was married to Betty. They had seven children and I am their sixth. My f ather was the only child of Patrick Curran. I grew up very proud to be Irish. I dyed my hair green f or St. Patrick’s Day when I was in school. My parents were going to name me Dennis but when I surprised them by being a girl, they chose a diff erent Irish name. Not Denise! All seven of us have Irish names. We live in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. I am a verif ied Couchsurf er so I was hoping to f ind someone who may be interested in hosting me. If not, I will try Airbnb. I’d like to stay close to town so I can spend my days in Sneem meeting with locals. If any- one has any suggestions f or me, please email me at waddelldeneen@gmail.com. ( I have a Facebook account but don’t check it of - ten). Thank you!! Deneen Page 15
Sneem TidyTowns Annual County Clean Up/Sneem Spring Clean The Annual Clean up took place over the weekend of the 13th and 14th of April. This year it was as always a great success with over 45 volunteers covering 50 miles of roads around Sneem. We had more volunteers than ever this year and would like to thank everybody for volunteering their time. The number of rubbish bags collected was down on other years so this is also good news as it shows less litter was thrown into our ditches and hedges. Weekly Tidy Up We are looking for volunteers to meet every Thursday morning f rom 11am at Sneem Resource Cent re to go weeding and litter-picking around the village. There will be tea and biscuits af terwards in the Resource Centre. Bumblebee Monitoring Workshop We held a Bumblebee Monitoring Workshop on Sunday 14th April in Sneem Digi- tal Hub. We were delighted to welcome Dr. Tomás Murray f rom the National Bio- diversity Data Centre who intro- duced us to the f ascinating world of bumblebees. TidyTowns Competition We submitted our applications for the SuperValu TidyTowns Competi- tion and Pollinator Plan Special Award on Friday 17th May. Judg- ing will commence in June. We really appreciate everybody’s ef - forts in maintaining the village to the highest standard. Playground Upgrade Councillor Norma Moriarty has kindly committed €5000 f rom her discretionary f und towards upgrading Sneem Playground. Would interested parents contact us with ideas for new equipment? New Pollinator Bed Following on f rom the success of our pollinator bed in the North Square Fair Green that we planted last year, we have planted a new pollinator bed in the South Square. Thanks to the lads who painstakingly sieved out all the scutch grass before planting and to Caroline f or getting the plants and planting them. We have planted Nepeta (sometimes called poor man’s lavender), verbena bon- ariensis and salvias, all of which are loved by bees. We are raising cosmos and other pollinator f riendly plants f rom seed and will add these to the bed when ready. “How to” and planting guides are available in the Resource Centre, at the Green Chair and online at pollinators.ie. Top tip: Add bacopa and bidens to your window boxes and containers for added bee appeal this summer. Page 16

Autism Golf Classic Our S eventh A nnual Golf Classic, which was held on 26th April 2019 in B eauf ort Golf Club, was a huge success. 44 teams entered and not even Hurricane Han- nah could dampen the spirits of all concerned; in f act it added to the atmosphere because the prize giving and ticket draw were held by candle light . The golf classic was won by a team f rom Beaufort Golf Club and first prize in the raff le went to a Mr John Donovan who won t wo nights in Parknasilla Resort. This was a record year f or the classic with revenue well above last year and a total will be given in the next issue of the newsletter. A huge thanks to all concerned; the teams of golf ers f rom Sneem, the people who sponsored greens, (of which there were 39), those who sponsored tees (31) and those who sponsored prizes for the raff les (31), making a total sponsorship of 101 which is massive for such an event. People are so generous especially with so many other calls on scarce resources. Be assured that af ter expenses every penny will go to St Francis Special School. Many thanks Sonny Looney. Page 21

Blackwater News ‘A Place of Our Own’ by Blackwater Drama Group Blackwater Drama Group are back with yet another strong off ering this year; the only Dra- ma group around these parts who create and write their own original plays based on their local histories and events giving insight into the lives of their own people. This year’s pro- duction, ‘A Place of Our Own’, is set in 1950’s Blackwater when everyday lif e had many chal- lenges. The Blackwater community unites to achieve a Holy Mission, leaving personal dif - f erences of political allegiances and other is- sues aside, in order to achieve their ultimate goal. Loosely based on a true story (with a smidgen of artistic license), it deals with the George O'Neill as Dodie O'Dono- determination of the people of Blackwater to ghue and Eileen Reilly as Tildy build their own church. They succeeded in Neill in 'A Place of Our Own' b y raising the money against all odds and this Blackwater Drama Group. play tells you how they did it through a myriad of lovable and mischievous char- acters with laughter a plenty. We meet our young lovers – a matchmaker – a curmudgeonly bachelor with his own car! –a rejected ‘rip of a lass’ to say nothing of the f ormidable women who help raise f unds and an aff able storyteller. This original comedy production also has at its core a darker story that touches the soul and out of which goodness comes. It will have you laughing and crying and coming back f or more right through to the end of the performance. This year's play will be directed by Ann Shannahan. The play will be staged in O’Neill’s Old Dance Hall, adjacent to The Blackwater Tavern, tickets will cost €10 and must be pre-booked. The doors will open at 7.30pm and the perf ormance will begin at 8pm sharp. The play will premiere on Friday 31st May with extra perf ormances on Saturday June 1st and Monday June 3rd. Please note that there is no Sun- day scheduling that weekend. To book tickets phone Blackwater Tavern on 064 6682003.
