7 THE STORY OF BAREE (WINDING STREAM) This is an extract written by Fred Cole – 26.10.1973 Baree is a small suburb of Mount Morgan and is two miles from Mount Morgan Post Office to Baree Post Office. In the early days it was known as the Two Mile. Some of the oldies say that Mount Morgan was a suburb of Baree. The word “Baree” is aboriginal and means “Winding Creek”, so named because the creek known as Dairy Creek winds its way from Moongan to meet the Dee River near the football grounds. The name “Dairy Creek” was so named because of the dairy farms along its banks. Dairy Creek runs under no less than six railway bridges. The highest population figure would probably have been around the years 1914 –1916 or 1918 and would have been 500 – 600. The area would have covered approximately one square mile. The railway line was through Baree about 1898 and each railway bridges had its own particular name – Boylans, Orfords, Barbers, Mercers, Harkins and one other. The first station mistress was Mrs. McArthur and then Mrs. Brackley and Mrs. Lomas. It was at Mrs. McArthur’s station house that the Red Cross soup kitchen was set up during the terrible Bubonic Plague epidemic of 1900, that some of the folks present will no doubt remember. Quite a few local people died from it. We, as kids, used to take out billycans of hot soup to people who were sick. Baree was in the Shire of Calliungal, which took in the country from Walterhall to Moongan on the northern boundary and the southern part extended from the cemetery to down near Wura. Chairmen of the Shire were Henry Searle, Frank Cunningham, Davey Jones and Mick Lee. Around the year 1930 –31, the Town Council and Calliungal Shire Council merged and, from the first election Mr. Henry Searle became the first Chairman of the new Council. Shire Clerks were Vic Taylor, Fred Bowen and Malachi Staunton. In Baree there existed an organisation known as the W.P.O, similar to what we know now as the A.L.P, W.P.O. stood for “Workers Political Organisation” From this body came Mr. James Peterson who became a Member of Parliament for a number of years. There were quite a few shops in Baree at various times. The best known, I suppose, would have been the Baree Post Office Store which is the only shop still trading. Early occupants were Mr. McBowan, Mr. Clark, and Mr. McGladdery (known to the lads as “Frosty” on account of his white whiskers), Charles Marks, Frank Kelland, Mrs. E. Hoskins, Reg Geddes, Glen Menzies and the present owners Mr and Mrs. Noel Quinn. At the foot of the School hill was a small shop and this was constructed over the years by Wall Long, Percy Hound, Mrs. Cunningham and Mrs. Cochrane (Happ’s mother). This shop was a very popular spot for the school children that frequented the place for 3d worth of aniseed balls, fruit and lollypops. Another store, the Red Store, was built after the decline of the Dee Rush by Crozier Bros, and afterwards came Tom Danaher, Paddy Cleary, Mick Lee and Geo Thompson. This store was on the spot where Mr. Lionel Burrows now lives (Creek Street opposite the Baree Railway Station). There was a small shop in the railway yards close to the Baree Railway Station owned by Mr. Fred West. This was later pulled down and removed to a spot next to the School of Arts and was added to and, after Mr. West’s death, it was run by Mrs. West and Roger Gowland. Later on the shop was remodeled and conducted by Mr. Lal Stubbs who carried on the business until his retirement a few years ago. On the flat opposite the Railway Station, Hillers had a mixed business, which was burnt down one very cold night in 1902. The whistle of a water train passing through gave the alarm. Mrs. Fastings also had a small shop just a short distance further down on the ground where Mr.Les Thompson lives. Another shop was further out along the road where Mr. Tom Passmore lives. This was a much bigger store and was run by J.J.Brinston, a brother of Archie Brinston and uncle of Bill Brinston, the present owner of Capricornia Buses. Next to this shop was a barbershop, which, I understand did not last long. Haircuts in those days were 6d., now they are $1.30. Also on this area was Shepherd’s butcher shop. This butchery was previously attached to the back of the “Golden Spur Hotel”. Later on, Mrs. Jim McHugh conducted this butchery. A brick kiln and brickyard, owned by Gunthorpes stood on the ground where Kev Winter now lives. A Chinese Store was close to the brickyards for a time. Mrs. Rebetzke also ran a small shop close to the Railway Station. In the big kitchen of the Rebetzke home was where most of the teenagers learnt to dance in the early 1900’s, to the music played by Mr. Rebetzke on his accordian. . The Story of Baree continued on page 8
