MORE THAN JUST A COMPETITION! We are proud to introduce the EMCup. During the past 10 years, this prestigious competition amongst the best Hotel Management Schools in Europe has evolved into a well-established event. Participating students not only represent their school while working on academic assignments, the main focus is on making a difference with their vision and ideas. The EMCup challenges them to think out of the box about a real life topic and is the perfect possibility to meet, share visions, and build relationships with industry professionals. Ask well respected hotel management school alumni how they have been able to accomplish their success, and the majority will include ‘network’ in their answer. Therefore, an important focus of the competition is creating networking moments, not only for students, but also for deans, coaches, and hospitality professionals. That is why the true value of the EMCup lies not in the competition itself, but around it. Each year, a large variety of companies join the EMCup Business Jury to experience the motivation and innovation of the participating students first-hand. And each year, their enthusiasm grows! Because by sharing ideas, and by feeding them with ideas and input of others, valuable business ideas are born. “Networking is not about just connecting people. It's about connecting people with people, people with ideas, and people with opportunities.” Welcome to the 10th anniversary edition of the EMCup, and best of luck! Hospitable regards, CHARLES VAN GOCH STEPHANIE VAN OORSCHOT FLORIS DRABBE Mise en Place HotelloTOP HRC International 3
ORGANISATION Each year the European Mise en Place Cup is a big success. Not only the quality, knowledge and creativity of the students are the reason of this success. Networking is also a large contributor! IT’S NOT WHAT YOU KNOW, BUT WHO YOU KNOW THAT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE The organising team, Servicecenter 4Hospitality (S4H), manages and supports a variety of international networks and events for companies and professionals that are active in the European hospitality industry. We continuously strive to improve and connect the industry, with hospitality as our foundation. With this competition we aim to create and build long-lasting relationships, provide hands on experience, build a bridge between schools and companies and connect young professionals to the industry. With this Yearbook we offer you a starting tool to build, expand, and support your network. We wish you the best of luck with the EMCup and are ready to answer any questions that you might have during these days. May the best team win! HOSTS
HOTEL MANAGEMENT SCHOOL MAASTRICHT The Hotel Management School Maastricht (HMSM) is a hospitality school committed to educate young adults into qualified and passionate professionals capable of contributing to the development and innovation of the national and international hospitality industry. In our four-year bachelor programme in hospitality management (in both Dutch and English) as well as the master of Innovative Hospitality Management and the master in Facility & Real Estate Management we pass along our core values of passion, professionalism, initiative, openness and inspiration. Being an international industry, our alumni take up management and consultancy positions in hospitality or service sector organisations or set up their own business worldwide. SINCE 1950 Since its establishment in 1950, Hotel Management School Maastricht has enjoyed an excellent reputation worldwide. Having obtained an accreditation in small scale and intensive education, HMSM only admits about 340 national and international students per year and has a student population of approximately 1,100 students. To teach our motivated students the ins & outs of the industry, we employ 130 staff members. CAMPUS Alumni and students often have warm memories of their time on campus. Small and cosy, it is set in a lovely green park and consists of the Teaching Hotel, the education building, the student flats (259 single rooms), the student association Amphitryon and a sports field. Being part of Zuyd University of Applied Sciences, students enjoy a great combination of both theory and practice to prepare them for the industry. Students enjoy a variety of classes in the education building, while also carrying out trainings in the student restaurant Refresh and the Teaching Hotel. Furthermore we encourage students to develop their soft skills by requiring them to be internal on campus for the first year of their studies. TEACHING HOTEL Originally a 13th century castle, The Teaching Hotel Château Bethlehem has been converted into a designer hotel by 12 renowned Dutch designers in 2010. The Teaching Hotel has 26 unique hotel rooms, a restaurant, a bar and a range of meeting rooms. In this unique and inspiring learning environment our first-year students carry out many of their trainings and have the opportunity to experiment with hospitality, design and creativity. We’re proud to welcome many domestic and international guests and have the opportunity to let them “Take the next step in hospitality, feel the next step in hospitality and/or share the next step in hospitality.” 12
MAASTRICHT EXHIBITION & CONGRESS CENTRE MECC Maastricht’s product is success. With our flexibility, high level of service and entrepreneurial attitude we offer organisers, participants and visitors to trade fairs, congresses and events maximum success. As a modern exhibition and convention centre, MECC Maastricht contributes strongly to the (economic) attractiveness of Maastricht. We offer a successful partnership. MECC Maastricht exceeds their partners’ expectations by excelling on an operational and commercial level. This leads to achieving or exceeding intended goals. Our team is hospitable and service oriented, specialised in organising (inter)national conferences, expos and events. We are proud to be “The Best Congress Location of The Netherlands”. BBB & FOLIE CULINAIRE: 8-10 OCTOBER 2018 The hospitality industry exhibition BBB at MECC Maastricht (8-10 October 2018), which is held together with Folie Culinaire, offers visitors and exhibitors alike a guarantee for innovative products, interesting activities, inspiring industry colleagues, all characterised by the hospitality Limburg is famous for. The largest hospitality industry trade exhibition in the Euregio provides you with a complete overview in four worlds: Beverage Beach, Food Forest, Variety Valley, and Folie Culinaire. Workshops, tastings and exciting competitions will be held at special theme ‘squares’. You can enjoy a lunch worthy of a Michelin-star at affordable prices in the pop-up restaurant, or try various dishes at the Food Trucks. At the end of each exhibition day, culinary activities will be held in the evenings in the lovely city of Maastricht, where you can also profit from various BBB special offers. After all, there’s a good reason that more than 14,000 visitors of BBB Maastricht in 2017 gave the event an average review score of 7.5! 13
