Session 2: God’s Word – The Global Thread From beginning to end, the Bible has much to say about Global Missions. Once we see, for ourselves, how this global thread is weaved throughout both the Old and New Testaments, we begin to understand God’s heart for the nations – and hopefully our hearts are captured along the way! STORY OF FLOOD and TOWER OF BABEL GENESIS 12:1-3 The LORD had said to Abram, “Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father’s family, and go to the land that I will show you. 2 I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you and make you famous, and you will be a blessing to others. 3 ….All the families on earth will be blessed through you.” What did God promise Abram (soon to be called Abraham) and what were God’s intentions for Abraham’s descendants? Who are “All the families on earth”? * (Please write out all your answers so you can refer to them as we share all together.)
EXODUS 19:3-6 3 Then Moses climbed the mountain to appear before God. The LORD called to him from the mountain and said, “Give these instructions to the family of Jacob; announce it to the descendants of Israel: 4 ‘You have seen what I did to the Egyptians. You know how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. 5 Now if you will obey me and keep my covenant, you will be my own special treasure from among all the peoples on earth; for all the earth belongs to me. 6 And you will be my kingdom of priests, my holy nation.’ What do you think God’s long-term intentions were for His people in light of the phrases “brought you to Myself” in vs 4, and “kingdom of priests” in vs 6? 1 SAMUEL 17:45-47 45 David replied to the Philistine, “You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the LORD of Heaven’s Armies—the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 Today the LORD will conquer you, and I will kill you and cut off your head. And then I will give the dead bodies of your men to the birds and wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel! 47 And everyone assembled here will know that the LORD rescues his people….” What was David’s motivation for challenging Goliath? 1 KINGS 8:41-43 41 “In the future, foreigners who do not belong to your people Israel will hear of you. They will come from distant lands because of your name, 42 for they will hear of your great name and your strong hand and your powerful arm. And when they pray toward this Temple, 43 then hear from heaven where you live, and grant what they ask of you. In this way, all the people of the earth will come to know and fear you, just as your own people Israel do. They, too, will know that this Temple I have built honors your name. As Solomon prayed to dedicate the temple, what was his expectation of God and his desire for foreigners?
DANIEL 6:25-27 25 Then King Darius sent this message to the people of every race and nation and language throughout the world: “Peace and prosperity to you! 26 “I decree that everyone throughout my kingdom should tremble with fear before the God of Daniel. For he is the living God, and he will endure forever. His kingdom will never be destroyed, and his rule will never end. 27 He rescues and saves his people; he performs miraculous signs and wonders in the heavens and on earth. He has rescued Daniel from the power of the lions.” Why did God allow Daniel to endure such a terrifying event in the lions den? PSALM 67 1 May God be merciful and bless us. May his face smile with favor on us. 2 May your ways be known throughout the earth, your saving power among people everywhere. 3 May the nations praise you, O God. Yes, may all the nations praise you. 4 Let the whole world sing for joy, because you govern the nations with justice and guide the people of the whole world. One third of all the Psalms have a direct reference to the nations and God’s desire to reach them. What stands out to you in this Psalm?
ISAIAH 49:6 (God said to Israel), “You will do more than restore the people of Israel to Me. I will make you a light to the Gentiles, and you will bring My salvation to the ends of the earth.” Eventually, Israel got off-track, became prideful thought that their Messiah was only for them and their benefit, but what does this verse say about Israel’s appointed mission? MATTHEW 28:18-19 and ACTS 1:8 “Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. 19 Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations…” “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” These are referred to as Great Commission verses. Why do you think these were Jesus’ closing statements and what do they reveal about God’s global passion? MATTHEW 24:14 (A foundational verse for the C&MA) “And the Good News about the Kingdom will be preached throughout the whole world, so that all the nations will hear it; and then the end will come.” What does this verse reveal about the church’s role in Christ’s return? REVELATION 7:9 “After this I saw a vast crowd, too great to count, from every nation and tribe and people and language, standing in front of the throne and before the Lamb.” What does this verse tell us about God’s global passion?
GOD’S WORD - TABLE TALK What are some potential ways you can encourage the pastors in your Network to be sharing Missions from God’s Word, helping their people understand what the Bible says about Missions? - - - - - - - - What might be some potential resources your Network churches can use or activities they can do to further understand what the Bible says about Missions? - - - - - - - -
Session 3: God’s World – Our Current Challenges “Global Missions exist because global worship doesn’t!” As Christians, we are members of God’s own family. We have eternal life in Christ, the opportunity to come before the throne of grace with confidence, the blessing of daily renewal, and the power of the Holy Spirit living within us. But, put yourself in the shoes of someone today who is living with limited or no access to Jesus! You are living in the 10/40 Window, but you have no idea what that is. You have never heard the name of Jesus, so the idea that you are unreached has never crossed your mind. There is no church you can attend on Sunday morning to hear the Gospel. There are no bookstores where you can purchase a Bible. There are no Christians to answer your questions, and there is no mission effort focused on reaching you. You are utterly unengaged with the Gospel. You have no access!
PEOPLE GROUP A group of people within which the Gospel can spread as a church-planting movement, without hitting barriers of understanding or acceptance (such as language, ethnicity, religion, culture, etc). People Groups are often referred to in the Bible as “peoples” or “nations” and sometimes “families”. REACHED PEOPLE GROUP A group with a population of at least 2% indigenous evangelical believers that can evangelize and disciple the remaining non-believers. UNREACHED PEOPLE GROUP (UPG) There is no indigenous community of believers with adequate numbers and resources to evangelize their own people group (less than 2% evangelical). “Completing the Great Commission is not just about lostness – it’s about LACK OF ACCESS to the Gospel.”
THE 10/40 WINDOW Between __________________________________ latitude Stretches from ____________________________________ Has _________________________ of the world’s population Has approx. _______________________ of the world’s poor Has __________________ of the world’s UPGs and UUPGs UNENGAGED UNREACHED PEOPLE GROUPS (UUPGs) The unengaged peoples of the world represent the places where there is zero Christians and zero known churches trying to reach them! Missions is: going cross-cultural where there is little or no access to the Gospel…..and by equipping others to take the Gospel to even more unreached people.
Why is the 10/40 Window so unreached? 1. The world’s ______________________________ find their origins here and religions are firmly entrenched within the culture, family relationships and fabric of daily life. T___________________________ (161 million unreached people, 700 UPGs) H__________________________ (860 million unreached people, 1800 UPGs) U____________________________ (121 million unreached people, 15 UPGs) M___________________________ (1.3 billion unreached people, 1300 UPGs) B___________________________ (275 million unreached people, 200 UPGs) 2. Many of the countries here ___________________________________ the Gospel 3. Most believers are ________________________________________________ Matthew 9:37-38 “Jesus said to His disciples, “The harvest is great, but the workers are few. So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask Him to send more workers into His fields.”
Out of the 16,000+ people groups on planet earth, there are still around 4000 that need to be reached with the Gospel!
GOD’S WORLD – TABLE TALK What is your reaction to the fact there are still people groups that have no gospel engagement yet? - - - - - What are your thoughts knowing that over 80% of our Alliance workers are working in the 10/40 Window and/or unreached places with unreached people? - - - - - What might be some ways to effectively communicate these things to the pastors in your Network? - - - - - -

LUZ ADMIRABLE, MEXICO Luz Admirable, a missions base just over the border in Mexicali, Mexico, is designed to help churches grow in their walk with Jesus, develop a global perspective and embrace a culture that is different from your own by engaging various areas of ministry, community outreach and leadership development. In order to not create dependency in our community, we partner WITH people, not just do things FOR people. We invite you to partner with us! VISION TRIPS Vision Trips are for you and your church leaders who have decision-making power to visit an International Alliance field to see what’s going on. The idea is, you will bring a team to see the work and return to get the church engaged in a Partnership.
HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE – TABLE TALK What benefits of short-term missions have you seen from the trips you have been on or observed? - - - What are some problems or challenges you have seen in relation to short-term mission trips? - - - What is the role of the DMT as we think about helping our churches understand their short-term-mission-trip opportunities? - - - Have you ever been on a Vision Trip to an Alliance field? Are you interested in going on a vision trip if the District organizes it? If so, what field interests you?
Session 5: GIVING to fund the Mission “No question about it, reaching the world with the Gospel comes with a cost, financial and otherwise.” “Is the Commission Still Great?: 8 Myths about Missions” by Steve Richardson The Great Commission Fund - Our Alliance Family fund • The Great Commission Fund is the way we fund Alliance Missions. • This is a fund that includes both ____________ (general) and ____________(specific) giving. • Churches in the Alliance family contribute to this family fund so that those with little ____________ to the Gospel can be reached. • International workers raise a portion of their ___________________ costs (40% - 60%). Compensation includes: ________, _____________ and ___________. These funds are raised through designated giving.
Churches partner to achieve greater impact: The Great Commission is too big to do alone and too important not to do together. Ways Alliance Churches Give to Alliance Missions 1. Many churches give _________________ (undesignated) to the GCF each month to support our international efforts. 2. Some churches give undesignated funds and also ______________ a portion of their giving to a _______________ international worker. - Churches and individuals can give generally or to a _____________ they love. 3. Some churches designate a _________________ of their budget to Alliance missions. What are the advantages and disadvantages? *Note: If you follow this practice you might consider giving your people an opportunity to personally give to one of the two yearly offerings (GC Day and Christmas Offering). How do we Increase Financial Engagement in our churches? • ___________________ promotion (Repetitive exposure) • Share ____________ of ____________. Alliance videos, IW Updates, ST group testimonies • Personalize through ___________________ (partnership) • ____________________ on the Great Commission • Provide ___________________ for giving. Missions emphasis, GC Day, End of Year Offering, Partnerships What is Our Goal? Our desire is for the DMT to effectively promote the work of the Alliance, so that every church will participate in giving to Alliance Missions through the GCF - whether to the general fund, designated giving to an IW, or both!
GIVING – TABLE TALK Why do you think some churches in our district do not give to the GCF? - - - - - What practical ideas do you have to encourage giving to Alliance missions in our local churches? - - - - - What are some ways we effectively share this topic in our Networks? - - - - -
Session 6: GLOBAL PARTNERSHIPS Global Partnerships create strategic relationships between our SPA District Churches and our Alliance workers overseas. The IWs benefit as we come alongside and join them in their work and support them personally through prayer, encouragement and finances. Our churches benefit as they become personally engaged with God’s work around the world. HOW TO CHOOSE A GLOBAL PARTNERSHIP Pastors often ask, "How does my church choose a Global Partnership?" The best approach in finding the right partnership for your church is to start by asking yourself a couple of questions, like: 1. Do we know any Alliance workers already that we would like to connect with or support? 2. Do we already have a place or region of the world in mind where the Alliance is working that we would like to connect with or go see? 3. Do we have a type of ministry or project in mind that our church would like to be a part of overseas? As your church starts to pray and discuss connecting with our Alliance work globally, these questions will be helpful as you think through what it means to engage in Global Partnerships!
PEOPLE Do you already know any workers on the field that you can support? Alliance IWs that were sent from your church, IWs that have spoken at your Missions Conference in the past, or a young couple ready to be deployed to the field, these are all examples of PEOPLE with whom you may already have a heart connection with and could start a partnership. PLACE I have found that many times, God will call a church to connect to a certain country or region of the world. Some are called to connect with Cambodia, others have a heart for The Middle East, and still others may be interested in Mexico. Many churches have found they enjoy taking their youth south of the border, but also have a thriving partnership overseas as well. The idea here is, there is a PLACE on planet earth that the church feels called to, so connecting to that special place makes sense for the church. PROJECT This is about a specific type of ministry the church is passionate about. Some churches want to be involved in church planting, some with ESL, some are already equipped for medical work, while others are interested in working with tribal groups or fighting against human trafficking. The idea here is, the church wants to know – where is this PROJECT happening, because that’s where the church will want to connect.
