Candidate Brief – January 2022 Berwick Partners an Odgers Berndtson company Welcome from Nigel Hartley, CEO Thank you for your interest in the role of Director of Nursing at the Mountbatten Hospice Group. Over the past five years, Mountbatten has become a leader in its field across the UK and beyond. It has also grown considerably, most notably with the take-over by Mountbatten Isle of Wight (formally Earl Mountbatten Hospice) of Mountbatten Hampshire (formally Countess Mountbatten Hospice) almost three years ago. Mountbatten is now the largest provider of hospice and end of life care across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, providing hospice, end of life care and bereavement support to around 2500 people on any one day, mostly within their own homes. This shows a 200% increase in those benefitting from our support over the past three years. This growth is set to continue for the foreseeable future. Our mission is to ensure that no person who is facing death, dying and bereavement is ever ignored or left alone, with a vision of a world where all dying people and those close to them have access to the best possible expert support and kindness. There are three main challenges that we are facing: 1. The growth in need for what we do. We anticipate a further growth of 40% over the coming years, mainly due to the growing older population 2. We need enough human and financial resource to meet this growth in need, so workforce planning and fundraising development is critical 3. No-one wants to talk about what we do and there is a reluctance to put plans in place for a future which people do not wish to think about Our current five-year strategy, which was launched in 2020, sets out how we are going to address these issues through developing our new and unique Mountbatten model of care. Dying is no longer a short-term event for most people, and many people will die over a period of years rather than weeks or months. It is essential that what we offer addresses the needs of our local populations as we strongly believe that we are the custodians of this organisation and we are working on their behalf, ensuring that what Mountbatten offers is sustainable for the future. Mountbatten’s teams also work hard. We are driven by a cause which at the heart has an ambition to make the biggest difference possible and we are not ashamed of wanting to be the best we can be, consistently going above and beyond, even when times are tough. At this important point in our development, due to the retirement of the current post-holder, we are seeking a dynamic and committed Director of Nursing, with a wide range of skills and a palpable ambition to join us on our journey. Experience is important, but it is more relevant that we find the individual with the right personality, with kindness and ambition at the core and a commitment to work as hard as possible to achieve our aims. There is much to be done, and the modern hospice movement even in Britain has not yet reached its full holistic potential. If you feel that you have the experience, credibility, and more importantly the warmth and ambition to join a charity which is consistently aspiring to be the best in its field, then we very much look forward to hearing from you. Nigel Hartley CEO Mountbatten Hospice Group 2
Candidate Brief – January 2022 Berwick Partners an Odgers Berndtson company Mountbatten Overview Mountbatten is an independent charity providing medical/nursing/domiciliary end of life care and bereavement support to both the Isle of Wight, Southampton, and Hampshire. We also provide specialist services including psychological, creative, and complementary therapies. Mountbatten Isle of Wight has an ‘Outstanding’ rating from the Care Quality Commission, with the CQC commenting that Mountbatten ‘’work innovatively with their local hospital…and the various departments work well together so that people have a seamless experience of moving from one department to another as the need arose. People, their relatives and staff spoke overwhelmingly of the positive support, guidance and healthcare interventions people had received…and were full of praise for the staff in terms of their exceptional kindness, compassion, and knowledge about end-of-life matters’’. In August 2021, Mountbatten Hampshire received an overall ’Good’ rating from the Care Quality Commission, following a ‘mock’ CQC inspection commissioned by the Senior Management Team in 2019, where the result had been ‘Requires Improvement’. They said ‘This 24/7 service is an uncommon service for a provider to offer’ and patient and families commented very positively on it. Mountbatten’s CEO is Nigel Hartley. Our mission is very clear; ‘’To promote and to provide good care and support for those people living with, affected by, or curious about death, dying and bereavement across the Isle of Wight and Hampshire’’, and our vision is of a world where all dying people and those close to them have access to expert, compassionate and cost-effective care of the highest quality, whatever the illness, whoever they are and wherever they happen to be. We achieve this though our Values, which are; We care about what we do. We appreciate that people are different, and we are kind and compassionate to our patients and families, to our local community and to each other. We are experts in our field. We are professional at all times, aspiring to be the best that we can be in everything that we do. We are innovative and bold. We respond quickly and creatively to the changing needs of our society within the scope of our human and financial resources. We respect our community. We exist for our local population, now and into the future, and we believe that we can achieve more together by working in partnership with others. Mountbatten’s Five-Year Strategy Mountbatten has devised and commenced a five-year strategy with three core aims; ◼ We will change public perceptions around death, dying and bereavement and also about the work that Mountbatten does. ◼ We will meet the needs of everyone who requires our care and support, ensuring that no-one is ignored. ◼ We will make sure that everything Mountbatten offers is sustainable for the benefit of future generations.
