MEET A MATCH! MEET ABOUT BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF SOUTHWEST WASHINGTON MATTHEW & MILO Our mission is to create one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth. Our agency operates under the belief that inherent in every child is the ability to succeed and thrive in life. We are committed to helping Littles (ages 5-18) access their own resourcefulness and resiliency in order to achieve their full potential. We offer a variety of programs ranging from our more familiar Community-Based matches, to our Site-Based Military Mentoring, to career exploration for high school students with MentorU, to facilitating Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) activities and role models with the MY STEAM Learning Lab. Matthew and Milo have been matched for two years in a site-based program in Pacific County. They previously met once a week at Milo’s school, but now meet over zoom. During these meetings they play Star Wars table top role-playing WHY SPONSOR A BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS EVENT? games and frequently include Milo’s brother and Matthew’s son. Milo says that he’s changed since starting to meet with Matthew because they’ve learned more about Unlike many other non-profit organizations in the community that serve children, we do not charge each other and Matthew makes him feel like, "I am GOOOOD at everything!" a fee to the families or volunteer mentors in our programs. That means that 100% of our operating budget comes from donations, grants, and funds raised from our events. In fact, in 2020, over 50% One of Matthew’s favorite memories of spending time with Milo was when they of our revenue came from special events. Our Bigs continue to find innovative ways to stay connected to their Littles. In addition to ensuring Matthew felt like it was a great moment to witness and to have a hand in bringing our matches are supported, our agency staff continues to help families connect with the resources about. they need to survive…and thrive.
