OT Student Insights A review of “An Occupational Therapist's Role in Person-Centered Design" | Rebecca Langbein | TEDxJe!ersonU by Jennifer Joy Tiongco, Stony Brook SOTA President Rebecca Langbein, who was a third-year doctorate student in occupational therapy at the time, presented this TedTalk. Langbein comes from a background of engineering, and maintained her passion for it. Her dream is to blend together both her passions for engineering and occupational therapy in order to design technologies and environmental structures that are inclusive and capable of accommodating people from all walks of life. She starts her talk by describing occupational therapy as a field in which we work with our clients to empower them, looking at their skills, current tasks, and what can be modified. She describes occupational therapy and engineering together as an “inter-professional dream team.” Langbein gives an example of a client she had worked with during her clinical rotations who had rheumatoid arthritis. The client worked as a paralegal and, due to the nature of her work, was required to type a lot. Her diagnosis made it di#cult for her to complete this task for her job. Langbein saw the need for finger splints, but the client had addressed her distaste with the appearance of the finger splints and how she much rather wear jewelry that suits her taste. Therefore, utilizing her knowledge and skills from occupational therapy and engineering,
Langbein was able to design a finger splint that could very well look like jewelry. Langbein puts it this way: “What if we designed hearing aids that didn’t make the people who wear them feel self- conscious? … What if we designed desks and seats for classrooms that could be comfortable for children who may need adaptive seats and for children who don’t need them?… A world where needing an adaptation, doesn’t mean surrendering one’s sense of self,” (TED, 2019, 5:04). These powerful statements by Langbein serve as a reminder of our goal as occupational therapists in thinking beyond just accessibility. Addressing the client’s needs, desires, and goals is what makes our profession client-centered and truly empowering to those who may otherwise feel limited and less than as a result of injury or disability. Another topic she highlighted in the talk is the role of occupational therapists within environmental structures, such as parks and recreation. She states that we have the skills, power, and knowledge to work alongside other professions and make an impact on a community level. Occupational therapists can work alongside transportation companies, public parks, and other people with the skills to bring broad changes in the system. Through this, all people may feel empowered to participate in the activities and occupations they want to do. Overall, Langbein shed light on the importance of interdisciplinary care within our field, one that is beyond the scope of clinical care. As a future occupational therapist, not only can I make an impact within the lives of the clients that I work with, but also within my community as a whole. Reference: TED. (2019, November 19).
