Firstly, the sad news that our dear friend Barry Cryer OBE has gone to the big comedy stage in the sky; he will be so missed and leaves behind a legacy of laughter. Our thoughts are with all of his family at this sad time. Barry’s best line about his love of Talking Pictures TV is summed up perfectly in this quote about his mobile phone: “My phone’s so old it has an Alastair Sim card.’’ Our event at St Alban’s Arena is just a few weeks away now. Completely sold out, there will be no tickets on the door, but there is a waiting list so do call the office if you’d like us to put your name down. You should all have your NEW tickets with correct date and time on and if you don’t, please get in touch as you will need the ticket to get in. Our scream queen panel, of Valerie Leon, Martine Beswick, Madeline Smith & Jenny Hanley will all be there, hosted by Caroline Munro, now with the added beauty of Judy Matheson joining us; and we are delighted that Joanna McCallum, (whose parents were Googie Withers and John McCallum), will also be there, as well as Freddie Davies and Anita Harris; our MYSTERY Star guest is still to be announced! Brian Murphy and Linda Regan will open the show and Noel and Mike Read will be hosting a LIVE Footage Detectives on stage. We are also rejoicing as we have found the most beautiful Art Deco Cinema in chocolate box Christchurch, Dorset – and have a whole ‘Weekend By the Sea with TPTV’ planned for Saturday 16th & Sunday 17th July 2022 – do get your tickets quick as they are limited. It will be a weekend full of fun and nostalgia in a beautiful setting, more details on pages 10-12. We can’t wait to see you there! A weekend by the sea almost! The Regent Cinema, with Talking Pictures TV Christchurch, Dorset. The Regent opened on Boxing Day 1931 as the Christchurch cinema, showing The Taming of the Shrew with Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks. It retained this important community role for over CELEBRATING 90 YEARS forty years until July 1973, when it was closed as a OF THE REGENT AND cinema and then re-opened as the Mecca Social and Bingo Club. The final cry of ‘house’ was sounded CINEMA & TV HISTORY in February 1982. There was a strong need for an arts centre in Christchurch and in November 1982, Saturday July 16th Christchurch Borough Council purchased the Regent. Together, the local authority and a group of over 100 enthusiastic 10.30am – 7pm volunteers lovingly restored the building to all its early Art Deco glory. and Sunday July 17th The Regent Centre in its present form was finally opened on June 11th 1983 10.30am – 7pm 2022 by the actress Dora Bryan OBE. Today, the Regent Centre is one of the finest examples of an early 1930s cinema surviving in Britain. It regularly hosts events as diverse as film releases, jazz, big band music, ballet, opera, professional touring theatre and celebrity star shows. The Regent is also the venue for local amateur companies. Living It Up! A Weekend by the Sea with Talking Pictures TV at The Regent Information Sheet The Regent Cinema is the home of entertainment for Christchurch, East Dorset and the New Forest. It opened on Boxing Day 1931 as the town cinema, showing The Taming of the Shrew with Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks. After 40 years it became a Bingo club for a decade before Article by Penny Lambirth closure, but in 1982 Christchurch Borough Council purchased the building, and, with the help of volunteers, it was lovingly restored to its early Art Deco glory.
