Lord Dalhousie said: “Brechin Castle has been the family home for many generations Burns but the running costs are a significant overhead for the family business. We have there- fore taken the decision to put the house and gardens up for sale and my wife and I will move to another smaller house on the Estate once the sale is complete. The rest of the Estate at Brechin, Edzell and Invermark, and all our business enter- prises, including Brechin Castle Centre and Peggy Scotts, as well as our farming opera- tion, forestry, game and property letting, will continue to operate as at present and, other than those who are employed at Brechin Castle itself, there will be no change in our present staffing, which now numbers around 90 full and regular part time staff. Page 2 Best Day Evaa My three-year-old granddaughter recently told me in a British accent, “Papa Dave, this is the best day evaa.” Turns out she watches a cartoon about a pink pig named Peppa who is British and says this all the time. Who knew we would get a great start to 2019 from a pink pig, British at that? But I think you and I need to make a conscious decision that this year will be “The Best Year Evaa.” I read somewhere that we are “happiest” when things are better. Meaning, the lower our expectations, the more likely we are to be happy in the moment. The party you dreaded turned out to be fun . . . happy. Your old car never starts, but today it did twice . . . happy. Your over-planned, over-spent vacation rains out . . . unhappy. So, the secret to happiness is to lower your expectations? Newsletter of Clan Ramsay INTERNATIONAL, INC. Page 3 Clan Ramsay President’s Letter MARCH MADNESS There is an old idiom: There are two sides of every coin. I find the news a bit like that. For example: The international news can become rather daunting – from Cyclones, to mass shootings in New Zealand, to Floods in Missouri, even protests on the streets of Paris! It can be overwhelmingly frustrating. However, on the other side of the news coin, if you read the Ramsay Report, it is full of delightful accom- plishments and GOOD NEWS: Things that truly make me smile with confidence that good things do remain. You just need to know where to look! Our Clan Member and Financial Guru Dave Ramsey shares his granddaughter’s Best day Evaa, and that made me smile. Grand children are such a blessing! Page 7 Central Highland Games a Success Winter Springs, Florida January 18th-20th, 2019 The Central Highland Games were held January 18th, 19th, and 20th, at the Central Winds Park, Winter Springs FL. The weather was a little cool but overall it was a great weekend for Highland Games! David F Ramsey, SueAnne Scott Ramsey, Ronda Ram- sey Shackelford and Lee Shackelford again this year co- hosted Clan Ramsay and Clan Scott tents, only a few ar- guments occurred surrounding the tent!! Friday was set up day and was easy since we were not required to set up our own tents! Friday night we attended the Sponsor's reception which had a wonderful buffet and lively enter- tainment. Saturday bright and early we opened the tent and since the weather was in the 60s many people attended the games. Clan Ramsay had more people sign in at this game than we have seen in the past, and we used four sign in sheets on Saturday alone! “Only a few arguments occurred surrounding the tent.” Ronda Ramsey Shackelford and Quite a few joined the clan! David Ramsey allowed cooler heads to prevail. This game holds a Clan March on both Saturday and Sunday at noon. They always say noon but of course we never start at noon! We love marching on Saturday as historically games always have more people attending on Clan Ramsay Saturday than on Sunday. Sunday was a little cooler but still good attendance Flowers of the Forest and people visiting and signing in at the tent. Sunday afternoon breakdown and packing, but again no tents to be taken down!!! A person cannot help but think that the Central Flori- da Highland Games would be a great place for an AGM!! The weather is great compared to Missouri!! It is a great venue, a large game with many clans, food, and enter- tainment! A very nice Hilton is located in the vicinity to stay, with games rates if you book early, also convenient since the Friday night reception is in one of the Hilton ballrooms! Looking forward to Loch Norman Highland games in Huntersville/Charlotte during April and the many other games coming this year. Newsletter of Clan Ramsay INTERNATIONAL, INC. Page 8 News from the The European group has proudly celebrated its Fourth Burns Supper. This was the third event, along with the highland games “Old Continent” association’s “Saint Michel Force Ecossaise”, which members were mainly comprised of Ramsays. Belgium and France were well represented, with more than 190 guests in attendance, for the Burns Nicht event. Among them were clan representatives from the Scott, MacKenzie, MacKinnon, La- mont and Hay groups. They honoured us with their presence. As usual our Chef, and Tanist, Philippe had a dedicated culinary team! They prepared selections of salmon, haggis and neeps, cheese (the event took place in France and it is difficult to have a dinner without cheeses) and last but not east the traditional cra- nachan. This wonderful evening was coordinated by Dominique, our Keeper of the Quaich. Dominique also served wonderfully as time keeper, managing the evening to fit perfectly into a scheduled The Haggis timetable. Elcem, Laurent Cruz-Mermy’s nickname, prepared a moving Selkirk grace to start the festivities. Then guests enjoyed Scottish dances, the address to a haggis, still declaimed by Luc Monod and your servant, some tunes marvellously played by the 91th Gâtinais District Pipe Band and a traditional folk band to close the evening. Burns Nicht was a tremendous success, enjoyed by all who attended. Now we will be focusing our attention on another important event, to be held in July, known as the French Scottish Fairs. We will be appropriating the same guest houses as usual and 30 mem- bers have, as of today, registered for this event. We have knowledge that another personality may be attending this year. In 2018 we had the opportunity to welcome James Hu- bert Ramsay, 17th Earl of Dalhousie. In 2019 another clan is looking at the possibility of inviting an important someone. Just rumours for now. For the Scottish fairs event Clan Ramsay will have three joined tents, with one tent being dedicated to Clan Scott. Clan Ramsay has an excellent relationship with Clan Scott, even if we don’t have weddings between our European clan members – we are working on it. Of course, our overseas cousins are always invited to our events and we will welcome them with the greatest pleasure. We look forward to the AGM to be held at Stone Mountain in 2019. Currently a team is being organized for those of us, from the “Old Continent”, who plan on attending in October.
