High Level Meeting Between Indian and Indonesia Coast Guard Director General Indian Coast Guard (DG ICG) Shri G Rajendra Singh is hosting a seven-member delegation of the Indonesia Coast Guard (BAKAMLA) led by Chief of BAKAMLA Vice Admiral ATaufiqoerrochman in India from December 16 to 19 2018.
India and Indonesia have established a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and there is considerable emphasis from both sides to enhance bilateral defense cooperation including maritime security cooperation. During the 6thIndia-Indonesia Joint Defense Cooperation Committee (JDCC) meeting, held in New Delhi on August 09, 2018 both sides had agreed that Chief of BAKAMLA will visit India for a High Level Meeting (HLM). Consequently, a HLM between the Indian Coast Guard and BAKAMLA was held in Coast Guard Headquarters, New Delhi December 17, 2018. 2. Merriam-Webster selects ‘Justice’ as its 2018 Word of the Year Merriam-Webster has declared ‘Justice’ as the 2018 Word of the Year. As per Merriam-Webster says, the word ‘Justice’ is used in many phrases like racial justice, social justice and obstruction of justice. Every year Merriam-Webster, the American dictionary-publishing company, publishes the list of Words of the Year. The ‘List of Words of the Year’ contains the ten English language words of the year. The company started publishing the list in 2003 and have been publishing at the end of every year since then. Merriam-Webster is a US company famous for its dictionaries and also known for reference books that it publishes. 3. Various Scholarship Schemes of HRD Ministry for Students The Ministry of Human Resource Development is implementing the following important scholarship schemes:
National Means-Cum Merit Scholarship Scheme: Under the scheme, scholarship is awarded to the eligible meritorious students, having parental income up to Rs.1.5 lakh per annum, with the objective to arrest their dropping out in class VIII and encourage them to continue education at secondary and higher secondary stage up to class XII. 1, 00,000 fresh scholarships are provided per annum. The rate of scholarship is Rs.12, 000/- per annum. (ii) Central Sector Scheme of Scholarship for College and University Students: Under the scheme, financial assistance is provided to those eligible meritorious students who are above 80th percentile of successful candidates in the relevant stream from a particular Board of Examination, in class XII and having family income of less than Rs. 8 Lakhs per annum. 82000 fresh scholarships are provided per year (41000 for boys and 41000 for girls) and have been divided amongst the State Education Boards based on the State’s population in the age group of 18-25 years. The rate of scholarship is Rs. 10,000/- per annum for the first three years and Rs. 20,000/- per annum for the fourth and fifth year. (iii) Special Scholarship Scheme for Jammu and Kashmir: The scheme aims to encourage the youth from Jammu & Kashmir to take advantage of the educational institutions outside the state, which would provide them an opportunity, to interact with their counterpart from the rest of the country, thereby be part of the mainstream. 5000 fresh scholarships are provided per annum. Scholarship is provided towards Tuition fee and Maintenance allowance. The rate of scholarship towards tuition fee for General Degree course is Rs.30,000 per annum, for Engineering course is Rs.1.25 Lakhs per annum and for Medical studies is Rs.3.0 Lakhs per annum. 4. India’s first military flight using Blended Bio-Jet Fuel Flown by IAF On 17 December 2018, Experimental Test Pilots and Test Engineer from IAF’s premier testing establishment ASTE, flew India’s first military flight using blended bio-jet fuel on the An-32 transport aircraft.The project is a combined effort of IAF, DRDO, Directorate General Aeronautical Quality Assurance (DGAQA) and CSIR- Indian Institute of Petroleum. On 27 July 2018, Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa, Chief of Air Staff had announced IAF’s intention to promote bio jet fuels. Addressing the CII-SIDM seminar on promoting indigenized technologies, the CAS had stated that IAF intended to fly the An-32 with 10% bio jet fuel on 26 Jan 2019 Republic Day fly-past. Indian Air Force carried out extensive engine tests on the ground. This is now followed by flight trials using 10% bio jet blended ATF. This fuel is made from Jatropha oil sourced from Chhattisgarh Biodiesel Development Authority (CBDA) and then processed at CSIR-IIP, Dehradun. IAF intends to fly the An- 32 transport aircraft using biojet fuel on 26 January 2019, in the Republic Day fly-past. 5. 10 monuments adopted under the ‘Adopt A Heritage’ project
The ‘Adopt A Heritage: Apni Dharohar, Apni Pehchaan’, scheme launched on 27th September, 2017 is a collaborative effort by Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Culture and Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), State/UTs Governments and envisages development and maintenance of tourist amenities at heritage sites and making them tourist friendly, to enhance tourism potential and cultural importance in a planned and phased manner. The project primarily focuses on providing basic amenities that include cleanliness, public conveniences, safe drinking water, and ease of access for tourists, signages, illumination, Wi-fi etc. No fund is given by Ministry of Tourism. The Project envisages involvement of Private/Public Companies / Organizations and Individuals to adopt Monuments, Natural Heritage Sites and other Tourist Sites in the country, primarily under CSR. 6. Union Cabinet approves free LPG connections to all poor families Union Cabinet clears expanding Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana to provide free LPG connections to all poor families. The government extended Ujjwala Yojana of providing free cooking gas (LPG) connections to all poor households. The scheme, launched in 2016, originally targeted giving LPG connections to women members of below the poverty line (BPL) households. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved expanding the scope of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana to cover poor families not having LPG connections and not covered under the existing beneficiary categories. 7. Catriona Gray wins Miss Universe 2018 Title
Catriona Elisa Gray from the Philippines was crowned as the Miss Universe 2018, beating 93 contestants from other countries. She was crowned by Demi Leigh Nel-Peters from South Africa, the Miss Universe 2017 title winner. India was represented by Nehal Chudasama in the beauty pageant. Nehal Chudasama failed to enter the final 20 of the Miss Universe 2018 competition. After Lara Dutta had won the crown in 2000, no Indian contestant has been able to win the Miss Universe title in all these 18 years. This was the 67th edition of the Miss Universe pageant. Miss Universe 2018 was held at in Nonthaburi Province, Thailand on 17th December 2018. For the first time, the competition was judged by an all- women jury. 8. Joshna Chinappa wins National Squash Women’s Singles Title, 2018 Joshna Chinappa won the National Squash Women’s Singles title after she defeated Urwashi Joshi in the final match of the competition by 9-11, 11-1, 11-6, 11-5. It was her 16th National title and with this win, she has equalled the record of Bhuvaneshwari Kumari of winning 16 titles. Joshna Chinappa is the first Indian squash player to win the British Squash Championship in 2003. She won this title in the under 19 category.She is also the youngest Indian women’s national Squash champion. Joshna Chinappa and Dipika Pallikal Karthik won the squash women’s doubles gold medal in 20.
