AUGUST 2021 August was first called Sextillia (Roman for sixth), as it was the sixth month of the Roman year. It was later changed to August by the Emperor Augustus, as he named it after himself. AUGUST 2021 E R ' S FAVORI RESIDENT OF THE MONTH E PP TES P PEPPER LYNNE DANIEL Pepper Lynne Daniel was born May 12, 1955, in San Antonio, Texas to Red and Peggy Bush. She was only eighteen months old when the family relocated to Topeka. Pepper is the oldest of six brothers and sisters. Movie Pepper attended Highland Park High School and Allen Gone with County Community College where she majored in the Wind Human Services. One of Pepper’s favorite jobs was working with the disabled and helping them stay in their own homes. Dessert Lemon Pepper’s unusual name came from her Mother. While Meringue Pie Peggy was pregnant, she read a book in which the heroine was a smart, strong, independent woman named Pepper, and so the name was born. Pepper met her first husband, Jim in 1971. He was in the Air Force and after they were married, they moved to Animal Ramstein, Germany where they lived for five years. Elephant Sherry, their oldest daughter, was born in Germany in 1975. Upon returning to the states, they settled in Phoenix, Arizona where their second daughter, Sharon was born in Color 1977. After they divorced in 1978, Pepper and her two girls moved back to Topeka to be close to family. Green Pepper met Ron Daniel in 1992 while they were both working at Dillon’s. They married in Las Vegas in 1994. Music They happily resided in Topeka until Ron passed away in 2004. Pink! Pepper’s favorite vacation was in Snowmass, Colorado in 2007. The whole family had made plans to go when Pepper’s mother passed away unexpectedly. The family decided to take the vacation anyway and celebrate Peggy’s life. It was a wonderful family time together. Another exciting experience was white water rafting the Colorado River with her brother. She said the water was ice cold and she didn’t think she would ever warm up again Flower afterward. AUGUST 2021 Welcome to our Oak Creek Family NEW EMPLOYEES Samantha Neuner CNA Angie Taylor CMA Erin Higgins CMA/PRN EJ Yewell Morning Cook EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH HALEY WARBRITTON - CMA Haley has been with Oak Creek since July 2020. Haley has always wanted to help people and make a difference in their lives since she was young. She chose a career in caregiving because she felt this would give her the opportunity to do what she loves, so she became a CNA in 2018 and a CMA in 2019. Haley is gentle and kind making her a resident favorite. She says she, “Enjoys her co-workers and all the wonderful residents here at Oak Creek.” Haley was born in Topeka on November 16, 1998. She grew up and graduated high school in Silverlake. Haley lives here in Topeka with her HALEY’S FAVORITES roommate Erin, two cats Ester and Henry, and her five-year-old bearded dragon, Clash. AUGUST 2021 In Loving Memory of Douglas Keeling MAY 18, 1923 - JULY 18, 2021 Douglas Vernon Keeling, Sr., 98, was born in Topeka, Kansas on May 18, 1923. He was called to his heavenly reward on July 18, 2021. Douglas was one of twelve children born to Henry Keeling and Ollie Matheney Keeling. He was preceded in death by his wife, both parents and his eleven siblings (brothers: Ernest, Henry, Kenneth, Milton, and Vinol and sisters Castella, Vernice, Mildred, Elizabeth, Inez and Gladys). Douglas resided in Topeka, KS his entire life. He attended Topeka Public Schools. He worked for several employers including the Supply Depot, City of Topeka, Topeka Country Club in the Topeka area. He retired from his working life after many years working at the Colmery-O’Neil VA Medical Center preparing food for the veterans. Douglas met and married Gwendolyn Kathryn Hueston on November 22, 1942. They were blessed to be married for 71 years before Gwendolyn passed away in 2014. This union was blessed with six children, four sons, and two daughters. He was preceded in death by two sons, Douglas Vernon Keeling Jr, and Keith Edward Keeling; two daughters, Barbara Joyce Keeling and Shirley Ann Keeling; two grandsons Linze Tate and Dwayne Keeling and three great-great-grandchildren, Ma’Leinna Cooper and twins Zoe Keeling and Xavier Keeling Jr. Mt Carmel Missionary Baptist Church was his lifelong church home He became a member on November 25, 1956. His membership spanned over 60 years. He served as an usher for many years until his health would no longer permit it. He was proud to be a ‘doorkeeper’ in the Lord’s house. He leaves to cherish his memory his sons, Louis (Della) Keeling and Larry Keeling of Topeka, KS, 11 Grandchildren, 33 Great Grandchildren, 19 Great Great Grandchildren, and four Great Great Grandchildren on the way. His life was also enriched by a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, his church family and friends. August 2021 -5
