D E S I GN F I L E COOK’S COMPANIONS THERE ARE A FEW CULINARY TOOLS OF THE TRADE YOU SHOULD CONSIDER ADDING TO YOUR WISH LIST WORDS HOLLY BYRNE THERE ARE AN endless number of new tools and technologies on the market that promise to enhance our culinary capabilities. More often than not, it’s too hard to distinguish the difference between game-changers and gimmicks, so homemakers often steer clear. Here’s our pick of the essentials – some of which you may never have known you needed.
EVERYDAY ASSISTANCE Investing in the right pieces makes prepping meals a breeze } Cast iron cookware Whether it’s a skillet, tagine or a casserole dish, if you’re a crafty home cook, the chances are you will already own (and worship) a cast-iron creation of some sort. If not, it’s time to invest. Generally suitable for both the stove top and the oven, a cast-iron casserole dish will see you through countless pot roasts, soups, stews, cakes and breads. Easy to clean, hardy and naturally non-stick, it’s a fail-safe addition that you’ll never regret – and likely never have to replace. When shopping, choose one with an oven-proof handle for maximum versatility. OUR PICKS 1 2 3 1. Cast-iron square grill pan in Duck Egg Blue, $98.95/28cm, Zanui. 2. Signature cast-iron round casserole dish in Marine, $399/20cm, Le Creuset. 3. Cast-iron frying pan with handle, $419.95/26cm, Staub. Kettles & Toasters No kitchen bench is complete without a kettle and toaster. While neither are surprising inclusions, latest functionalities and designs are taking breakfast to a whole new precision level, and they’ve lifted their game in the style stakes, too. Choose from a range of temperatures tailored to make the perfect coffee, or black, white and green tea, pick exactly how dark or light you want your toast to be, and enjoy the convenience of self-centring bread racks and keep-warm options. “I love the functionality of my Breville toaster,” says creative director Imogene Abady of Home Beautiful. “It features ‘a little bit more’ function, which allows for 10 seconds more toasting time. With so many artisan breads with varying sugar content, it gives me added control over cooking time, and the perfect slice of toast.” PHOTOGRAPHY (OPPOSITE) SHANIA SHEGEDYN, (THIS PAGE, FROM TOP) FELIPE SCHEFFEL/RBA, MICHAEL GORDON HILL OUR PICKS 1 2 3 4 1. Great for aficionados of the grape, a dedicated wine cooler is also brilliant for entertainers – just make sure you position it in a space in your kitchen where guests can access it easily, saving you a little bar duty. D E S I GN F I L E FAB FUNCTIONALITY A quick update can make all the difference } Pull-down mixer The kitchen tap is a vital component. However, for all the colours, sizes and styles of tapware on the market, there is one that trumps them all – the pull-down sink mixer. This wondrous invention makes everything from cleaning big, bulky pots and pans to filling buckets a breeze, and you’ll only realise how life-changing it is once you’ve installed it. Serial renovator and interior stylist Carly Schulz admits, “In our last renovation I chose a more traditional mixer for the colour, and it wasn’t until we actually moved in and started using the kitchen that I realised how much I had relied on – and missed! – the spray lever.” OUR PICKS PHOTOGRAPHY SCOTT FRANCES/OTTO/RAVEN & SNOW 1 2 3 1.
