WRAA Board of Directors WRAP and WRAA are two distinctly different programs President one is university-based and the other is a non-profit group—but both Mary Ann Inman (17-20) have been close collaborators for over 60 years in their mutual goal of 316 Church St., Clinton, WI 53525 (608) 295-9779 inman_ma@yahoo.com bringing art exhibit opportunities to Wisconsin citizens. Vice President Sally Probasco (19-22) The Wisconsin Regional Art Program (WRAP) has been 4914 Marathon Dr., Madison, WI 53705 helping nonprofessional Wisconsin artists develop their abilities for (608) 231-3037 or sallyprobasco@gmail.com more than 75 years. WRAP artists put the Wisconsin idea into action, Secretary sharing work that represents cultures and communities from around the Jan Feyzi (18-22) state. These lifelong learners also show the diversity of values, beliefs, 5642 Silver Oak Dr., Fitchburg, WI 53711 identities, and personal experiences that exist here, asking important (608) 273-3429 jmfeyzi@gmail.com questions about what it means to be a Wisconsinite. WRAP’s roots: Treasurer WRAP began in 1940, when painter John Steuart Curry organized the Beverly Larson (17-20) 1867 Briarwood Ln., Fitchburg, WI 53575 first Rural Art Exhibit at UW-Madison’s Memorial Union. With help (608) 835-7388 or bllarson@chorus.net from WRAA, Curry made the program a touchstone for Wisconsin's Membership nonprofessional artists. This legacy has been carried on by later WRAP Karen Cahill (18-22) directors Aaron Bohrod, James Schwalbach, Ken Kuemmerlein, Leslee 302 Fargo St., Lake Mills, WI 53551 Nelson, Helen Klebesadel, and Liese Pfeifer for the better part of a (920) 648-2893 or cahillk44@yahoo.com century. Letter From WRAA President... President’s Letter by Mary Ann Inman What’s new and futuristic? WRAA has restructured. We have established three permanent committees: 1. Executive Committee: President Mary Ann Inman, Vice President Sally Probasco, Treasurer Bev Larson, and Secretary Jan Feyzi vested with over- seeing operations. 2. Youth Programs: Coordinated by Jeanne Ferriera including Bobby Walker and Nancy McKinnon. 3. State Conference: Rita Carpenter and Anne Irish. On the Road by Teresa Vicars. Expect quarterly Contour Notes feature articles written by Publicity guru Teresa Vicars. This time the Spotlight is on accomplished WRAA artist Jimmy Yanny on page 13. Award collections, tracking, and conference emcee duties by Marinela Manastirli. Sally Probasco has moved on to become Vice President. Conference Registration duties by Rita Carpenter. WRAA is exploring software to allow participants to register and pay online. An ad hoc committee is reviewing if it is feasible and affordable. Areas that require the tracking and handling of larger sums of money include registration, awards, membership, Tiny Treasures, and donations. Grant writer Mike McKinnon has accepted the task of working with WRAP Director Angela Johnson and the Pyle Center to try to obtain funding to improve lighting to enhance art exhibits at UW’s Pyle Center. We realize this may not come full circle because when the facility was planned the architect may not have anticipated its use as an art gallery. In addition, we have discovered that there are very few venues set up to display up to one hundred and seventy-five artworks and hundreds of Tiny Trea- sures. Membership renewals are down significantly. There was an administrative glitch. WRAA failed to notify loyal members to renew. Some of you may have received phone calls or emails asking you to consider renewal. As a reminder our membership year runs from October 1 to September 31 to coincide with the Annual WRAA/WRAP State Conference. For membership assistance, contact Karen Cahill cahillk44@yahoo.com. Proudly serving as WRAA Board President, Mary Ann Inman Supporters of WRAA: Incredibly, this year's State Day is fast approaching and with it our acknowledgement of this year's most outstanding art works: State Awards. We would love to increase our recognition of talented artists and to do that we welcome the addition of new awards. Your establishment of a new award can be just the boost an artist needs to keep creating and growing artistically. Awards can be a one-year commitment, ongoing for several years or in perpetuity. We're flexible. If you, a family group, an art club or organization think the time is right, please contact: Marinela Manastirli, marinelamnj@gmail.com; or Sally Probasco, sallyprobasco@gmail.com 5

2019 Madison WRAP By Jean Lang, Coordinator. Photo by Angela Johnson and Kailee Kujawski “This year’s Madison WRAP featured 81 artists, 60 of whom at- tended workshop day. The guest speaker and judge was Bobbette Rose, an accomplished Madison print and website designer who also produces beautiful fine arts works. Originally Rose was a print maker, but when exposure to toxic solvents became a problem, she switched to tempura paints. In tempura, ground mineral pigments are mixed with diluted egg yolk, a medium that allows more light to reach and reflect off the pigments, producing stronger colors than oils or acrylics. Attracted to the detail of rough structures--broken sidewalks and cracked stone walls--Rose began creating related images by applying rich tempura colors to “tiles” with a textured surface which she made by coating a wood-framed board with cellu-clay. Judge/speaker Bobbette Rose (left) critiques a watercolor by Becky Herb. (Photo by Angela Johnson) Rose’s growing fascination with light and color was reinforced when she saw J.M.W Turner’s luminous 19th century paintings in London. “They glowed,” she said, “and were an inspira- tion.” Rose was also influenced by Makoto Fujimura who uses a Japanese technique called Nihonga in which mineral pigments ground to various precise grain sizes are applied with very small amounts of animal hide glue and reflect color strongly. “Here we buy jars of mineral pigments, all ground to a single, standard fine powder. But in Japan, pigments are ground in 17 different grada- tions, from powder to fine sand,” said Rose. In Nihonga, which is a general term for classic Japanese painting, one may layers paint of dif- ferent grain sizes. Each gradation reflects and transmits light in its own way: the finer the grain, the lighter and more translucent the color. Rose noted that when first approaching a new art technique like this, artists should make their work much tighter and more realistic than they usually do. “That forces you to learn how to control the technique and get the effect you want.” Guest speaker Bobbette Rose describes her work in encaustic, tempura and Japanese nohinga to Madison While studying Nihonga, Rose was also exposed to encaustic artworks WRAP artists. (Photo by Kailee Kujawski) in which mineral pigment is selectively applied to warm bees wax. “With encaus- tic,” says Rose, “you can build up multiple layers creating a totally different kind of light effect.” Sometimes she combines Nihonga with encaustic. She has also used encaustic methods to create prints, her first love. “They’re mono- type encaustics. You melt wax on a warm plate, form your design with the pigments, and then press the paper onto it.” Rose says some people consider her works abstracts. “I don’t,” she says. “I think of them more as reflections of my internal landscape.” Bobbette Rose finished the day with detailed critiques of the artworks. The workshop also included a lunchtime session just for the photogra- phers, led by WRAP director Angela Johnson, who teaches photography at UW. 2019 Prairie du Sac WRAP By Terrence Doeler. Photos by Terrence Doeler and Angela Johnson The Prairie du Sac WRAP workshop was held on March 23rd in the River Arts Center. Eighteen artists entered 36 pieces. The judge/presenter was Kathy Sherwood, who is a pastelist. She brought several of her pieces in various stages of completion and used them to demonstrate the various types of pastels available and some techniques of using them to create different effects. After the lunch break, she did a detailed demonstration using a portraiture of her daughter as the subject. Following that, she critiqued the award winners, pointing out features she liked that distinguished them from the others, and also an occasional pointer on how they could be improved. The attendees enjoyed her friendly, outgoing manner and willingness to answer any questions about herself or pastels. On the Road…Spotlight on Jimmy Yanny by Teresa Vicars In March, I met with Jimmy Yanny and his brother Mark at The Coffee House at Chestnut & Pine in Burlington where you can buy Jimmy’s prints. Jimmy came prepared with stacks of vibrant watercolors and acrylics. He has become a hometown celebrity and you can find his artwork displayed at numerous local venues. In addition to his own award-winning photography, brother Mark has photographed and cataloged over 300 artworks created by Jimmy and his sister Therese. Mark smiled and said, “The family is filled with artists due to our Dutch ancestry.” Early background: Jimmy’s art adventure started when he won an award in 6th grade with his charcoal drawing of a metal bridge. The next year, he earned awards for an ink drawing and a pastel painting of an angel. The pastel won best of show in Burlington and again at the Racine County Exhibit. In high school he enjoyed doing pottery, plaster reliefs, and painting abstractly. Jimmy went on to study art at UW Parkside in Racine and earned his BFA (1984). After graduation, Jimmy lived at home with his parents and helped take care of them as they aged. When his mother had to go into a nursing home, it was very difficult for Jimmy. So, for therapy he started painting “fast and furious” in 2013. Rediscovering Art/Community: Acrylic and watercolor are his favorite media. His favorite artists include Van Gogh, Matisse, Picasso, Monet, and Gauguin and their influence can be seen throughout his brightly colored paintings. Today, Jimmy paints up to 6 paintings a day and inspires others. The Gathering, a group that he started, meets to create and share. He does art workshops at the Burlington Senior Center, too. He volunteers at Love Incorporated, a resale shop and food pantry where he cooks lunch there every Thursday and Friday. Jimmy has plans to do a painting demo for the Waterford Garden Club in July and will lead a workshop for Mental Health Week in October. Recognition: He has won several WRAP State Awards and the Helen Mears Award. National Alliance on Mental Illness Wisconsin State Show selected him as the featured artist for 2016 and 2018. Jimmy’s paintings have been accepted into the juried Watercolor Wisconsin Exhibit at the Racine Art Museum twice.
