Douglas, Jr. — 2023 A Message from the Illustrious Potentate Dear Nobles, Ladies and friends of the Shrine. Hope everyone is well and are planning to join the First Lady Debra and me for some of the wonderful events we have planned for the Nobility. My first request is to share your VOICE magazine with your lady and family when you receive it. This will help increase attendance with our events. On Sunday, May 23 we had our annual Memorial Service for Nobles who passed away in the last two years since the pandemic prevented us from having a Memorial Service last year. We have a very fitting tribute to our deceased Nobles. I would like to thank Noble Rev. David Eichelberger for a wonderful and heartfelt Memorial Message also Noble Rev. Thomas Fodor for the Welcome, Noble Matthew Boice, our pianist, Syria Brass Ensemble, Syria Chanters, Bagpiper Noble Charles Gledich, Daughters of the Nile for refreshments and my Aides and Ambassadors. I have been asked how my year is going and I’ve told many people it’s been FANTASTIC. I do this to honor the memory of Noble Dale “Pinky” Pinkerton who always used that term, “FANTASTIC.” On Saturday, June 12 Butler Caravan No. 14 honored Dale by having a golf tournament in his memory. I, along with my son Noble Scott Green, participated in the event and had a FANTASTIC time! Since the 1950s the Syria Shriners have hosted an annual golf outing which supports our wonderful Shrine Center and I’m excited to announce that it will continue on Monday, July 26 at the Pittsburgh National Golf Course. This event is all about fun and fellowship and open to all! We need golfers and Tee sign sponsors. Please contact First Ceremonial Master and Golf Outing Chairman Randy Hobaugh (rhobaugh23@gmail.com) to answer any questions. We have been informed by Boscov’s Travel that both Potentate’s trips are sold out at this time. Debra and I are looking forward to seeing you at many future events and hope you have a great summer. Yours in the faith, Donald I. Green Illustrious Potentate 4

by Raymond Pfister, Captain, Legion of Honor Drill, Drum & Bugle Corps With the COVID-19 crisis taking its toll on many organizations, the Syria Shriners Legion of Honor did it’s part to fight the good fight against the pandemic. LOH, along with our own Sons of Veterans, has been hard at work performing presentations in leu of parades. We offer lodges and other Masonic and non- Masonic organizations presentations on the American Flag, the POW/MIA missing man ceremony, Memorial Day, Veterans Day and our Captain’s personal favorite, the History of military bugling. As with every year, Memorial Day was a very busy day for the Legion of Honor. We joined forces this year with the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Syria Shriners Sons of Veterans by participating in several memorial services in the McKees Rocks and surrounding areas. The day was filled with ser- vices at many war memorials and gravesites in three cemeteries. We had the honor of performing memorial services and TAPS at the graves of those who served in time of war to include the American Civil war and WWI. After one of these performances, our group of Legion of Honor and Sons of Veterans members had a woman approach us and ask who we were. After explaining about the Shriners, the woman told us how her grandson keep those cards in your wallets! on the Ohio River in the Northside of Pittsburgh. The Moment of Remembrance is a moment of silence and Day at 3pm. We welcome any organization that would request us to perform any of our presentations for one of their meetings or functions. In addition, we welcome all Shriners that are military veterans to join our ranks as well as Syria’s Sons of Veterans for those who have a parent or grandparent that served in the military. Contact for both the Legion of Honor and the Sons of Veterans is our Legion of Honor Captain, Ray Pfister. Shoot an email to armybugler@comcast.net, we are ready and willing to help you expand your Shriners membership by serving your country and your community in either of these great organizations. Note, for military vets, the Legion of Honor is one of only two military veteran organizations in all of Freemasonry. It is truly an honor to be an active member of the Legion of Honor. SYRIA SHRINERS QUARTERLY MEETING MONDAY, AUGUST 2, 7:30PM PITTSBURGH SHRINE CENTER BALLROOM 50-YEAR PINS AND CERTIFICATES WILL BE PRESENTED TO ELIGIBLE MEMBERS 7
8 Roadrunner patient transportation is slowly trying to get back to normal. The Shriners Hospitals COVID-19 mitigation rules have been reduced but are still not back to normal. We still have a COVID-19 masks. The number of hospital trips is still below normal. COVID-19 has affected the progress of the van garage construction. The construction project was approved at the second quarterly meeting in April. Construction was started. Three pine trees were cut and removed. for Construction of the garage has begun funds from our investment portfolio to finish the garage project. We are happy to report that construction will soon resume and we will have a better-looking, longer- lasting building to house our patient transportation vans and Pittsburgh Shrine Center equipment. The Roadrunners are now participating in parades as a unit. The first parade was in White Oak for Memorial Day. The second parade was in Prospect on June 5. This second parade was a make-up date for the parade canceled on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. Drivers Ray Schmitt, Roger Zrimsek, and Mike Taylor drove all three vans in the White Oak parade. Max Smith, Richard Roell, and Al Douglas drove all three vans in the Prospect parade. On July 3, all three vans are scheduled for Canonsburg and on Independence Day, they will go to Midland. Drivers are being scheduled for those parades. We are looking for future dates and locations for our vans to participate in parades. 12 ON THE ROAD WITH THE RODE RIGS by Dennis Conrad Life is full of ups and downs and the Rode Rigs over the last year or so have had their share good times and bad. With that being said it is with a heavy heart that I have to announce the passing of one of the Rigs’ count on them to participate in any unit or Shrine activity. Whether it was parading, which was one Odie’s favorite things to do, or hosting his annual Fish Fry, you could always count on Odie & Marylou. Not only was Odie active in the Shrine, but he was just as active in Blue Lodge and Scottish Rite. He was what you call a Mason’s Mason. Odie will be missed and might not be here with us any longer, but he will always be in our hearts and spirits. Godspeed, Odie. Now for some good news it is my pleasure to introduce the Rode Rigs’ newest member, Clifford A. Poff Jr. and his Lady Deanna. Cliff was in the first ceremonial class in April and as soon as he saw our Mini Jeeps, he had to have one, so he joined immediately and with us in Chicora and Prospect. Cliff is an active member of Argyle Lodge and lives in the Saxonburg area with his family. Welcome Cliff and Lady Deanna to the Rode Rigs family. Guess who just celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary in June? Congratulations go New Mini Jeep before this tremendous milestone in their lives down at Myrtle Beach having fun in the sun. Don is our parade Captain and also a member of the Roadrunners. With the help the Chicora parade. of his lady Gloria, they keep the Rigs on the straight and narrow with our parade schedule. Thank You both very much for all that you do for the Rigs and the Children. Once again, Happy 60th Wedding Anniversary and many more. As you all know the Rode Rigs are a very active unit and donate money to different causes within the Shrine. One of the groups we donate to is the Sew ’N’ Sews. This a group of dedicated Shriners’ wives that give of their time and finances to make bags, blankets and quilts for the children in our Shriners Hospitals for Chil- dren Erie and Philadelphia. In January Erie Shriners Hospital said that they were in “desperate need” of bags for the children and 349 bags were made and delivered to Erie Shriners. Last month, one of the members of for treatment. These dedicated ladies will continue to sew for both Hospitals and are always looking for donations of fabric and ladies who would like to join their group. Great Job Ladies. Calling all Shriners: If you’re interested in joining a motorized unit that has loads of fun then come and join the Rode Rigs. We have Mini Tractor Trailers and Mini Jeeps. We offer no Membership fee or Parade quotas and we supply parts of the uniform. For more information on becoming an owner operator of a Mini Rig or Mini Jeep, which can be ordered, call President Joe Micikas at 724-334-0540 or Dennis Conrad Secretary/ Treasurer at 412-956-2245 or John Handshue Membership Chairman at 412-877-4263. SONS OF VETERANS ASSISTS LEGION OF HONOR WITH PROGRAMS by Raymond Pfister The Sons of Veterans broke out of the Covid lockdown by working with the Syria Legion of Honor in the presentation of lodge visitation programs. We have made appearances in Canonsburg, Greensburg, and Tarentum with In addition to our lodge presentations with the Legion of Honor, we had quite a full day this past Memorial Day honoring those who gave their lives for our freedoms. Every year for the past 44 years our Secretary/Treasurer spends Memorial Day honoring the fallen with TAPS. This year the Sons of Veterans and Legion of Honor joined up with him to spend the day doing the same. We traveled throughout the McKees Rocks area performing several memorial ceremonies membrance at 3pm. We will gladly participate annually for Memorial Day as it was a true honor to travel veterans of the Civil War and WW1 as well as all of our other conflicts. With Memorial Day as well as our Lodge presentations, we have made many new Masonic and non-Masonic friends. If any club, unit, lodge, or even non-Masonic organization would like more information on our presentations, please contact us. We offer presentations on the American Flag, the POW/MIA Ceremony, the history of both Memorial Day and Veterans Day, and our Secretary/Treasurer’s personal favorite, the history of military bugling and TAPS. For best response, you can email Raymond Pfister for information on our presentations and also membership to the Sons of Veterans at sovsecretary@comcast.net. WE SET SAIL ON A VOYAGE TO PARADISE… 34 IN SO MANY WAYS by Charlie Zurcher enjoyable to finally meet as a group once again. After that long cold confusing year of changes, challenges, and concerns, we were given the opportunity to put all this behind us for one magical evening. We moved forward with our Masonic families to a new and brighter horizon. This night, we would set sail together on a voyage to paradise, and it was so perfect. The way many talents and efforts transformed our ballroom into a tropical paradise was incredibly While having such a spectacular evening, I could not help but recognize how all of us were enjoying this first post- COVID-19 celebration, especially with our important role in the success of our endeavors. Therefore, while sharing this evening with my lady, taking in the music with flowered shirt and drink in hand, came an inspiration to recognize and write about our Lady, our Shriner’s Lady. 34
THE CONTINUING ADVENTURES OF THE AWARD-WINNING SYRIA SHRINE CLOWNS by Rob “Splotchee” Brinkley Summer has been zipping along at a brisk pace, and the clowns have been out and about all around the Oasis of Syria. We have enjoyed gigs from Applewold to Zelienople, and there are still more along the way. Harige never wears makeup on Memorial Day, so Clown Tuxes were the uniform of the day in White Oak. To the South, parades in Canonsburg and Brentwood enjoyed the finely honed marching skills of the Harige, even if some of the time we were riding. All in all, a great summer so far, with Virginia Beach not that far behind. On a more somber note, our Second Lieutenant Bark Lee had to be hospitalized with a serious internal bleed, and received multiple pints of life-giving blood. If you are not already a member, please look for a local Lodge sponsoring a blood drive, and become a member of the Masonic Blood Club. If you cannot find one, call your District Deputy or your local Lodge and ask how you can get a drive go- ing in your area. The lives you save as a donor just may be one of our own broth- ers. There is a great need now and always, so please make the time, give the pint, and bring a friend to help keep our communities in stock with this precious life- saving commodity. Shamrock and a bunch of hobos at Harmony Lodge in June. Until next time: God Bless You All Real Good! 35

FIRST-EVER PAST POTENTATES — DIVAN BOWLING CHALLENGE by Illustrious Sir Donald Green Shriners have fun and fellowship, and in keeping with that theme, the Syria’s high-rolling Past Potentates and Divan Past Potentates, led by Illustrious Sir Mike Aaron, P.P. challenged the current Potentate, Illustrious Sir Donald Green and his Divan to a two -game a post-challenge dinner at DeLallo’s Fort Couch Café, and offered to buy the first round for all who attended. Although many gutter balls were thrown by keglers on both sides, the Past Potentates were unable to secure a victory. Our current Potentate and his merry bowling Divan won both games. Luckily, there are no injures to report to the Nobility, just a lot of fun and fellowship had by all! The lineup for the Divan included Illustrious Sir Donald Green, Assistant Rabban Jerry Sciullo, High Priest and Prophet Alan Tedeschi and First Ceremonial Master Randy Hobaugh. The Past Potentates were represented by Illustrious Sirs Mike Aaron, Jamie Rohbeck, Art Sarn and Don Taylor. Joining afterward for dinner and fellowship were Illustrious Sirs Larry Burton, George Polnar, Bob Addleman, and Bob Herbert. in the future. NOTES FROM SHRINERS CHILDREN’S - ERIE by Barry Hootman, M.D. Have you ever wondered why a Shriners Hospital for Children was founded in, of all places, Erie, PA. I have. . SC – Erie is indeed the smallest in the system, and also is one of the oldest. At Imperial Session of Shriners in Portland, Oregon in 1920, the concept of Shriner-sponsored pediatric care was envisioned. The first Shriners Hospital was opened in Shreveport, Louisiana in 1924. Meanwhile, in Erie in 1924, the Hamot family of Erie established Sunshine Valley Camp for Youth. This residential facility In 1927, Zem Zem Shriners in Erie agreed to adopt the facility from the Hamots, assuming control and responsibility for the newly named Zem Zem Hospital. (SC – Erie celebrates its 94th anniversary this such as polio, cerebral palsy, tuberculosis, osteomyelitis (bone infection), and hip dislocation. Just as medical care continues to evolve, the Shrine system must continue to evolve. About 10 years ago, it became evident to the Board of Governors at SC – Erie that the “full” hospital model was not sustainable. Our in-patient volume could not justify 24/7 staffing. Therefore, SC – Erie developed the first Outpatient Clinic/Ambulatory Surgery site model in the system. Since then four other sites have followed our lead and converted to this model. needed surgery at partner sites. Operating room equipment has been redistributed to hospitals within the system where needed. Fortunately a close relationship with Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh (CHP) has developed, while maintaining relationship with SC – Philadelphia. Our physician staff includes pediatric orthopedic surgeons affiliated with CHP, and SC – Phil, plastic surgeons affiliated with UPMC – Hamot, and an employed physiatrist. Since closing our operating rooms, we are now the lead site in the Clinic/Rehab site model. Other sites are therapy, artificial limbs and braces, nutrition, speech therapy, aqua therapy, wheelchair/mobility devices, so- cial work and family support, telemedicine, and more. And you can be assured that medicine will continue to evolve, and SC – Erie will too. The Board of Governors is comprised of 18 full voting members as well as associate and emeritus members. Syria Nobles Harry Truax, (as well as head of Syria’s Roadrunners). The board met monthly in Erie until the pandemic, then met virtual- ly and will soon resume on-site visits. As with all charitable entities in these trying times, financial support is lagging. With Units, Caravans and 39

SYRIA PATROL RETURNS TO THE PARADE ROUTE by Charlie Zurcher It has been more than a year-and-a-half since the Syria Patrol Unit last marched in a parade. The last time we put on our curled-up pointed-toe shoes, bright yellow wool pants, white silk shirts, carried our scimitars and wore our fezzes with pride, it was a cool autumn October afternoon back in 2019. While marching in the streets of Ligonier that day, little did we know … Wow, has it been that long?... Yes, it sure has. Fast forward to Memorial Day 2021. and stepped off in front of a carnival atmosphere. The streets were lined up, and as soon as we began to march, it took only a couple of seconds before I heard “Hey, look at those shoes!” I glanced over to see a couple of smiling children pointing and laughing at my curled-up shoes. That was incredible music to my ears. This is what we are all about. We were back! Yes, we were, in so many ways, and it did not take long. comments coming from the curb. Perhaps more than in past years. Comments that we have not heard in a while. “Thank You! You guys do great work” echoed many we can receive. and to recognize more of the good things going on around us. Regardless of the reason, I was just happy to be a part of it. The streets along the parade route were pretty much elbow to elbow. There was very little evidence that we just went though a serious pandemic. Perhaps this was the perfect chance to regain some form of nor- malcy. Just like we were, these people were so glad to finally be outside enjoying life. This was a wonderful afternoon and marked the beginning of a new chapter. Many more parades are being planned on the horizon. We can finally do what we do best. “We march so kids can walk.” That’s who we are. That’s what we do. We’re Shriners. I would like to give a special thanks to The White Oak American Legion for their hospitality and the lunch they provided us. Most certainly beyond the call of duty and appreciated by all.
