The initiative is a part of a multi-sectoral program coordinated by the City of Caprarica di Lecce “The City of the Poet”. ANTONIO L.VERRI Antonio L. Verri was born in Caprarica di Lecce (Apulia, Italy) in 1949 and tragically died in 1993. He was a cultural operator at local and international level, multidimensional artist, journalist, writer, looking for the connection between the cultural heritage, the roots and the future of his land. COMUNE DI CAPRARICA DI LECCE 3
TAO The contest takes its name from "i tao", elusive entities that permeate the rural culture of Salento. Antonio L. Verri was trying to open his little big universe of southern Italy to the world. "It will change, it will change a lot the face of the countryside, of human aggregates, of entire countries (...) And of course habits, ways of working, relationships will also change..., well, what will never change will be the idea of dialogue with the land that human has established since the time of the times, the big breath, the long hiss that can be heard only in the morning, aiming in the vastness of the fields, with the silver trees next to silent sentinels..." ( La Cultura Contadina - Antonio L.Verri) Inspired by Verri, who artistically expressed the culture of his roots in the work "La Cultura dei Tao", we launch a creative and cross- disciplinary challenge: a contest of creative tactical urbanism. A project that illustrates the spirit of Verri, looking to the roots to build the future. An original and creative idea, that speaks the language of the modern perspective of making urban planning for the physical and mental well-being of those who live those spaces daily, in the reality of the city. A Tao-ctical project: looking at the past to enrich the future. 4
TACTICAL URBANISM Tactical urbanism was born in response to the irreversible transformation of human beings into urban species. Cities are the factor that most significantly determines the quality of life and they urgently need to be re-generated and re-thought outside the schemes of traditional urbanism. Tactical Urbanism Tactical urbanism reverses the process: the starting point is citizens. Public space become a physical place for collective use defined by the relationships between individuals, social groups and urban space. Multi-functionality, liveability, flexibility, modularity and design are the key words of this innovative approach. Following the principles of tactical urbanism and the theme of tao, the participants are invited to present tactical urbanism projects of great communicative value, aimed at improving the public spaces of the community of Caprarica di Lecce (South Italy) or creating new ones. 5
