Hernán Cortés
1485-1547 Spanish conquistador

He led an expedition that caused
the fall of the Aztec Empire and
the conquest of Mexico in 1519.

Cortés’s strategy was to ally with some indigenous peoples against others. The Governor of Cuba sent emissaries
to arrest Cortés because he didn’t have permission for his expedition. But he fought them and won, using the
extra troops as reinforcements. Cortés wrote letters directly to the king asking to be acknowledged for his
successes instead of punished for mutiny fall[fɔːl] N caída

                          He organised the Spanish expedition
to the East Indies that resulted in
the first circumnavigation of the Earth,
                         completed by Juan Sebastián Elcano.

His expedition completed the first circumnavigation of the Earth (1519–1522), although Magellan did not
complete the entire voyage, as he was killed during the Battle of Mactan in the Philippines.
Magellan gave the Pacific Ocean its name.

Magellan's original expeditionary fleet to make it back to Europe after crossing the Pacific Ocean.
