CONTACT District 202D Edition: March 2022 Message from the DG... Well, here we are, the beginning of March and starting to feel the push of Omicron through our district. As a country we have done what we can to reduce the impact of its spread and I guess now we just have to hunker down and get on with it! Mask wearing, social distancing, thinking carefully before attending large gatherings or events - our accepted ‘normal’ at this time. Convention weekend has been and gone with our 50th AGM held virtually. It was extremely disappointing to have had to cancel the planned ‘Red Carpet Affair’ event and I know we will all look forward to a great ‘country shin-dig’ next year at Colyton. Electronic voting confirmed Steve Barr and Tobi Hipp be appointed as DGE and VDGE (respectively) for the new Lions year as well as confirmation of Financial Statements and reports as per the convention booklet. Congratulations Steve and Tobi and thank you to those who registered and voted. Thank you to those clubs who entered the awards and congratulations to our winners. (These are listed further in the bulletin.) Details for awards are detailed in the President’s manual and will be available on the soon to be released 202D website. The Convention booklet was sent to all club presidents and secretaries for forwarding on to members. If you haven’t seen a copy please check with them. Many thanks to Convention Secretary Rosemarie Knapman-Smith In this Bulletin for the great job producing the booklet. Message from DG An electronic copy of the virtual meeting is available. Again, the link has From the Editor been sent to all presidents, secretaries and zone chairs. Awards President Message As we head towards the last quarter of our Lions year I ask you all to LCIF reconnect; with each other, with your clubs, with your ‘Why’. We have had a rather strange couple of years and things have been and are, tough. It’s Trivia tough to stay motivated amidst the change and uncertainty we are all Youth experiencing. Remind yourself and others of the good work you have Global Service Team done, the projects you have been involved with, the fun and fellowship you have enjoyed as a club, the differences you have made in your Global Membership Team communities. Charitable Trusts Lions live with purpose, to serve those who need to be served. Be The Glob update contagious with the purpose that drives you, with positive thoughts that Let’s Laugh fuel those around you and positive attitudes that fuel those who need it. From LCIF Chairperson Dr. Jung-Yul Choi Your support of doing and giving is essential with only four months left to reach our historic campaign goal. The success of our campaign, association, foundation, and future starts with you. The news below will help you lead by example with resources and tools to magnify your service and support of LCIF. To each Lions and Leos club going boldly into a new era of service – an era where serving 100% is accomplished only when clubs both do and donate – thank you! Useless Facts If you open your eyes in a pitch-black room, the color you'll see is called "eigengrau." Go into the darkest room that you can find, one where there's no light at all, and spend a few minutes with your eyes closed. Then, open them up and take a look around. While you'd expect to be staring into pitch-blackness, you'll actually notice that you're seeing a sort of dark gray shade. And that color has a name: It's called "eigengrau." Alaska is the only state whose name is on one row on a keyboard. With "A" and "S" being beside each other on the middle row of the standard QWERTY keyboard and "K" and "L" over on the other side of the same row, Alaska is the only state name that you can type out using a single row on a keyboard. A cubic inch of human bone can bear the weight of five standard pickup trucks. Human bodies can sometimes feel vulnerable and fragile. But if you want to feel like a superhero, keep in mind that human bone is actually stronger than both steel and concrete. "Bone is extraordinarily strong—ounce for ounce, bone is stronger than steel, since a bar of steel of comparable size would weigh four or five times as much," biomedical engineer Cindy Bir told Live Science in 2010. "A cubic inch of bone can in principle bear a load of 19,000 lbs. (8,626 kg) or more—roughly the weight of five standard pickup trucks—making it about four times as strong as concrete." The little dot above a lowercase "i" and "j" has a name. While many other languages include written accents throughout their alphabets, English only has two letters that include a "diacritic dot," according to Dictionary.com. That small mark you make over a lowercase "i" and a lowercase "j" is called a "tittle." It's likely a combination of the words "tiny" and "little" since it is an itty-bitty dot. March 2022

Hopefully by now you would have shared the Informa on about this great opportunity for Youth aged 12-16 yrs with Clubs in your Districts. Applica ons will open on the 1st Feb and close 7th May. Hi everyone, I have very li le news from clubs to report for service, my biggest message is about repor ng your service. I know it is same old, same old, for you, but it is very important for various reasons: 1) Recording what your club does for your community for your own record, 2) for your District 202D record, 3) for Mul ple Districts records, 4) for Interna onal records. Interna onal is where, how and why we get money to operate Lions Interna onal, our hours of service enables Lions to provide evidence of what their sponsorship money helps be done on the ground where it is needed. Interna onal provides funding for Lions events like River Blindness, Measles, Malaria, Diabetes, sending money to places hit by natural disasters. The bigger picture of Lions. So, most clubs look to local first to give their support and money too. Then it is Lloyd Morgan and Lions Clubs Interna onal, which is great, but we need to fully understand the extent and range of Lions Interna onal and the really big projects that are funded that makes changes for the good of millions of people throughout the world. We can make a difference locally and Interna onally, just by repor ng our service once a month, if you don't report for various reasons, then please, ask ques ons, ask for help, explain your problems and get/let someone help you so that your club can report the fantas c ac vi es that your club does. Congratula ons to Megan for our virtual AGM and Conven on weekend, well done, it all went so well and was excellent. Huge kudos to Ma Wellington for his technical knowledge and ability in se ng up, opera ng and ensuring everything worked as is was supposed to, awesome. Now we work towards June, this is the ni y gri y mes when new Presidents coming in, work on their themes, their boards, their ideas and pull it all together to report to their clubs their plans for the coming year. Great stuff. Keep up the good work everyone, you are fantas c, just remember that when the going is tough, it is hard to stay mo vated, covid is nipping at our heels now, but, remember, when the going gets tough, the tough get going!! Cheers, Daphne Sinclair-Holley. March 2022
Revitalising Membership By now many of you will have heard DG Megan and I talk about the new membership ini a ve that is coming next year called the Global Membership Approach. Membership is the life blood of our great organisa on. We are not alone in experiencing difficul es on recrui ng and retaining members. This membership programme, while is has come out of LCI, differs in many ways from any previous a empts to grow member numbers: 1. We are not being told what to do, we are being given a logical process to help. 2. At its centre is an acknowledgement that local people know what will work in their own communi es. 3. The process is aimed at ge ng a team of people together from throughout our district to work together, share experiences and come up with a plan that is right for our clubs. The programme has 4 main areas of focus to grow membership. These are: So we are needing to get a team of people together to work on this project. We are looking for people who are passionate about what Lions do in our communi es and are keen to help ensure this work con nues by growing the number of people who are proud to call themselves Lions. If this sounds like something you could be interested in, please contact me. Stephen Barr VDG 202D Email: 202d.vdg@lionsclubs.org.nz March 2022
Membership Update on Global Membership Approach We have now iden fied over 70 members from throughout the district who are interested in being involved in this new ini a ve. The plan is to have 2 mee ngs to brainstorm all of the issues we face and come up with some strategies and plans that will work in our clubs. One will be held in Taranaki, and the other in the Manawatu to minimize travel and make it easier for everyone to par cipate. We had been planning to hold these mee ngs this month, but when the Covid Red Light se ng was announced, thought it was wise to hold off un l the situa on is clearer. We now hope to hold these mee ngs in mid -March if it looks safe to do so. We will be in contact by e-mail to those who have indicated they are interested in helping. In the mean - me, it is not too late to get involved so please contact me if you would like to take part. Stephen Barr VDG 202D Email: 202d.vdg@lionsclubs.org.nz March 2022
SETTING UP A CHARITABLE TRUST If are thinking of se ng up a charitable trust to comply with recent changes in chari es legisla on, you are not alone. Many clubs are doing the same and we can help you with the process. There are several par es that you will need to deal with along the way: · Your club · The chari es commission · Incorporated Socie es · Inland Revenue · Your club's bank We have developed a straigh orward summary which details the steps you need to take when dealing with each of these par es. This is based on the experience of our club, which did this last year. Please contact me and I can send this to you. There are 2 documents that you will need to use: 1. Charitable Trust Deed template 2. Standard Lions Club Cons tu on (latest version) These are both templates that are simple to fill out. They have been approved by Lions, the Chari es Commission, Incorporated Socie es and Inland Revenue. Using these documents will streamline the process and ensure that we all operate by the same rules and stand together. I can send these to you as well. So please don't be afraid or confused by the process. I am happy to come and talk to your board or club about it if needed. We are here to help!! My Free Health Check Lions Project. Good afternoon team, At yesterday's Cabinet meeting I gave a very potted version of this new Lion's initiative. I thought it would be useful to give a small package that you could give to the clubs in your zone. The reason for this is quite simple. Now that we have got our heads around what is involved, we are now on the road “so to speak”. Very soon we will have fine-tuned the service and then will be ready to offer it to all Zones in 202D. Remember, this has been a 202D project right from the start. It was only adopted by Zone One with the philosophy to start low and go slow. Below is a brief resume of what it is and what it is going to do in the future for our farming communities. My Free Health Check. In July last year I was sent a newspaper clipping by past DG Roy Price. It reported of the presence of the 'Glob' at a recent Friday at the Feilding Saleyards. The Glob caravan belongs to Global HQ which is a media firm in Feilding that has 40 on it's staff. They specialize in rural events, and as such attends these in both the North and South islands. Two years ago, the owners of Global HQ asked themselves ' what can we do for the farmers that attend these events'? They decided to buy and refit a 7 metre caravan affectionately known as The Glob to attend the farming events and provide a free health screening service. They hired a professional front of house person, a nurse and a GP from Rakaia. Until Roy sent me the newspaper clipping I had never heard of the Glob or Global HQ, even though I have lived in Feilding for 50 years. I rang Dean up and suggested Lions could form a partnership to help them. We have a club in every town in New Zealand. We have the expertise and we have the manpower to help them. Great, said Dean, come and have a chat. We had a chat and our offer of a partnership was warmly accepted. At our next meeting, three weeks later, every thing was completely turned on it's head. Global HQ suggested they gift the Glob and the service to Lions. This was a very generous offer. There were several reasons for this. · First, they are not a medical firm. · Secondly, they had been offered services by front of house they could not deliver on, or fulfill. · Thirdly, it was costing approximately $5000 an event. March 2022
Fortunately, we had a Zone One meeting 3 weeks later. At this meeting Dean and Michelle gave a presentation about the project. After they had left, there was a unanimous approval by all clubs present that Zone One would accept the Glob and all the infrastructure involved. A steering committee was set up to get our heads around just what this service involved. It is complicated. It is not just arriving at a venue and setting up the caravan. The personnel involve are: · Financial. Income and expenses are managed through the Zone 202D trust account. (Thank you Anne). · Capital costs for the caravan. · Insurance. · Running costs. WOF, electrical certificate, transport costs, repairs, tyres. · Personnel required. Doctor, nurse, front of house, driver, local staff recorder. · Staff requirements. Accommodation, training, recruitment, catering, other expenses. · Site preparation. Water, power, toilets. · Transport plan · Liaison with local GP's. · Consumables. · Data entry. All clinical data is entered into a dedicated laptop for collation and the printing of reports. This is proving to be a very fascinating result of the service. All completed questionnaires are held by myself and there are no individual identification details recorded. The steering committee is a unique event in its self for Zone One. It consists of representatives from 5 different clubs in Zone One who met every week to get our heads around what we have taken on. We are not selling candy floss here – we are dealing with people's lives and will be the recipient of some very personal and at sometimes disturbing information. Steve Barr, Colyton Bunnythorpe Lions and VDG Ash Hazlett. Past DG and Rongotea Lions Robert Heath. Past Zone One Chair and Feilding Host Lions rep. Steve Poole. Feilding Manchester Lions Secretary Anne Russell. District 202D Treasurer. John Collis. Farmer. Past President, Feilding Manchester Lions Warren Nicholls. Past President, Zone One Chair. The process of “ MY Health Check” is divided into four components: 1. Front of house. Meet and greet. Staffed by 2 or 3 farmers. They help participants to fill in 2 questionnaires. The first is about age group, occupation, when last seen their own GP. The second is a mental health questionnaire. 2. Clinical measurements. Height, weight, BMI, BP, lung function, blood cholesterol and sugar, skin lesions. 3. This data is then assessed by the GP. A recommendation is made to see their own GP if indicated. Urgent action can be taken by the mental health crisis team or 111. The aim is to give a copy of the questionnaire and the clinical findings to the participant and they take the responsibility of contacting their own GP. 4. Follow up by the My Health Check Glob GP 2 weeks later for those who have been instructed to see their own GP. Only Christian names and phone contacts are recorded on the questionnaire. March 2022
When this service was first accepted, a few Lion members were concerned as to the financial and manpower obligations that would be involved. Finances. It took several months to come up with a realistic budget for the service. There were capital costs to bring the caravan up to spec and there were running costs at each event. Eventually, a realistic budget of $10,000 was realized for capital costs alone. This included a gazebo, generator, hot water, insurance, stationary, fire extinguisher, first aid kit, mugs and many other small items. I have managed to find $5000 in sponsorship, which is an amazing gesture from the commercial sector. Within the next 3 weeks, Zone One had realized $5000 in pledges from 4 clubs in Zone One and an application was made to the Lloyd Morgan Lions Clubs Charitable Trust for a similar amount. A big thanks as this was granted in late January. As regards manpower, it is envisaged that a local club will provide this at their local venue. In an ideal world, it would be preferable to supply a nurse and a GP, but we could supply both depending on the day required. So, here we are. We have sorted out what needs to be done and are now ready to provide this wonderful service for our farming community. We cannot be everywhere because of the manpower involved, but if you have a major farming event in your Zone please let me know. As to expenses, we hope you will cover your local event. The costs will be small. The cost of the site for the Glob (hopefully free), the cost of the refreshments and the cost of towing the van to and from the venue. All team costs will hopefully be voluntary. If you want any more information, please let me know. If I am available I am willing to come to any Zone Meeting if you want any more information. Finally, two important things to remember. · This is not a GP service. No medical treatment is provided and the only medical advice is when to see your own GP. · It is a District 202D project. We have only started in Zone One because that is where Global HQ and the Glob are situated. Once we fine tune the service, we would love to come to your Zone. If your Zone has any clubs who wish to contribute to the Lions My Health Check project, the account is a part of the 202D trust account . Deposit Details are: Lions Clubs Interna onal District 202D Charitable trust account 03 0791 0232608 008 , remember to add club name so our Treasurer knows where it came from. A truck driver phones his boss, "Hey boss, my mirror is broken." The boss says, "Well then Just buy a new one and replace it then." The truck driver answers, "I can't. The truck is laying on it." Old farm owner John farmed a small farm in Taranaki. The Department of Labour claimed he was not paying proper wages to his workers and sent an agent out to interview him. “I need a list of your employees and how much you pay them,” demanded the agent. “Well,” replied old John, “There’s my ranch hand who’s been with me for 3 years. I pay him $600 a week plus free room and board. The cook has been here for 18 months, and I pay her $500 a week plus free room and board. Then there’s the half-wit who works about 18 hours every day and does about 90 percent of all the work around here. He makes about $10 per week, pays his own room and board, and I buy him a bottle of bourbon every Saturday night.” “That’s the guy I want to talk to, the half-wit,” says the agent. “That would be me,” replied old farmer John. Morris, an 82 year-old man, went to the doctor to get a physical. A few days later the doctor saw Morris walking down the street with a gorgeous young woman on his arm. A couple of days later the doctor spoke to Morris and said, "You're really doing great, aren't you?" Morris replied, "Just doing what you said, Doc: 'Get a hot mamma and be cheerful.'" The doctor said, "I didn't say that. I said, 'You've got a heart murmur. Be careful.'"..ooh! Teacher: "Anyone who thinks he's stupid may stand up!" *Nobody stands up* Teacher: "Im sure there are some stupid students over here!!" *Little Johnny stands up* Teacher: "Ohh, Johnny you think you're stupid?" Little Johnny: “No... I just feel bad that you're standing alone..." Three retirees, each with a hearing! loss, were playing golf one fine March day. One remarked to the other, "Windy, isn't it?" "No," the second man replied, "it's Thursday." And the third man chimed in, "I'm thirsty too, Let's have a beer." March 2022

ZONE, DISTRICT & NATIONAL NEWS Update PLAYSCAPE - Work on the Playscape is continuing with base work in place for much of the structures and equipment. - The walkway from the new hospital to the Playscape is nearing completion. - All going to plan, completion is expected in two months. - However, we must advise completion is subject to supply of materials, with supply issues (as the result of COVID) an unknown factor. NEW CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL – TE WAO NUI - With external cladding and glazing now complete, the construction team is progressing with the internal fit-out. This includes internal lining of rooms, carpeting, vinyl and wall finishes. - Family friendly wayfinding signage with Kaitiaki character theming has been created and tested with key groups. - The link bridge into the main hospital has progressed. - Mark Dunajtschik is planning to hand over the Hospital building to the DHB at the end of March. This means that he has completed the building to the agreed levels. - The DHB will then undertake additional works to the building to maximise the opportunities presented by lessons learned from COVID-19, and changes in clinical practice. These works – particularly those in relation to air-handling – will enhance our ability to care for children with RSV, COVID-19, or other respiratory-type illnesses and will make us more resilient for future outbreaks. It will also give us greater flexibility in the use of physical space to care for the children of our region. - When completed, there will be a final operational commissioning phase to allow the Child Health Service to move into the new building. - This will delay the official opening for a few more months with opening date yet to be confirmed. But in this day and age it pays to have everything right. SIGNAGE / PLAQUE We will be in touch with you shortly regarding signage and Lions recognition once we are advised by the DHB as to the overall signage concepts. The Playscape will be clearly signposted including the entrance from the hospital building to the Playscape. SUMMARY The Foundation continues to work towards the fundraising goal of $10million and we are confident we will achieve that by September. Prior to the hospital being fully operational we hopefully look forward to arranging a suitable function, when COVID levels permit, for us and hospital staff to thank Lions Clubs International Foundation and The Lloyd Morgan Lions Club Charitable Trust. The Playscape will be included in the handover by Mark Dunajtschik and we understand it will be completed by that date with perhaps some follow up things being need which the DHB will undertake. Also, as discussed, there has been a cost increase to this project due to the strengthening of the total area and increased costs requiring the DHB and the Foundation to fund almost an additional $500,000. But it would not be happening without Lions support so we and everyone is so grateful for Lions support. Thank you again for all your hard work and dedication to this project. We remain incredibly grateful to Lions Club International Foundation and The Lloyd Morgan Lions Club Charitable Trust for their outstanding support and have enjoyed meeting and working with so many wonderful members. They brought with them 200 packages containing blankets, non-perishable food, wet towels and napkins for babies, bottled water, winter coats, and women hygienic products. Serving from a bomb shelter, the Lions of Ukraine with a LCIF grant are providing food, medicine, and hygiene products for those displaced in Kyiv, the Kyiv region, and Zhytomyr. Your donation to LCIF’s Refugees and Displaced Persons fund will help ensure that Lions are there to help them find the safety and security they desperately need. March 2022
