WELCOME WELCOME WELCOME I would like to begin by acknowledging and paying my respects to the Wiradjuri people, the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we are gathering. I would like to pay my respects to their Elders, past, present and emerging, and acknowledge all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders here today, also paying my respects to your Elders, past, present and emerging Welcome to your Easter 2021 Orienteering Carnival – phew we made it!! This event is taking place in the Orange and Molong areas of NSW – courtesy of Charles Sturt University and a number of private landholders – we thank them for sticking with us over the last couple of years and allowing us to hold our races on their properties. For you as participants this has been a “shall I or shan’t I” event in so many ways – Book accommodation? Book flights? Book cars? Arrange holidays from work? Well now you are here we hope it has all been worth it and you are able to relax and enjoy not just our lovely forests and rock, but also all the local area has to offer – from wineries to gourmet produce and restaurants, to cycling trails – both in town and out, galleries and museums and local people to chat to! So Welcome and “May You Run In Sunlit Forests”. Ron Pallas IOF EVENT ADVISOR Welcome to Easter 2021. It seems like a long time since the last national carnival - Oceania 2019. We have some wonderful orienteering challenges for you over the four days of this carnival. You will be challenged physically, technically, and mentally by some of the best granite terrain and one of Australia’s best granite maps, a new map of intricate rock detail that will be at scale 1:7500 and a sprint map that is a typical University campus. At some point during the carnival, you will be tested in a wide range of orienteering strategies by the maps and the courses - complex granite, unique intricate rock detail on Day 1, areas of slow run and low visibility, fast open sections, long legs with almost no tracks, many short legs in complex low visibility terrain, downhill challenges, and many changes of direction. The Easter Prologue and Day 2 are World Ranking Events. Also, the four events for the elite classes will comprise Round 2 NOL and as such will be important events for all WOC and JWOC nominated athletes as performances in these events will have a direct bearing on the selection of these two teams. Given that there has not been much bush orienteering during Covid 19 times, we are really looking forward to this opportunity to give you all the challenges mentioned above, and we recommend that you prepare yourself especially technically and mentally for these challenges. Nick Dent v01 22 March 2021 4 of 32
WELCOME FROM ONSW PRESIDENT On behalf of Orienteering New South Wales, I am pleased to finally welcome orienteers to Orange for the 2021 Easter 3 Days. The events will be held on one of the best granite areas in the state and I know there has been exhaustive planning to ensure you experience quality orienteering over the Easter period. Overall organisers Nick Dent and Ron Pallas and their team of mappers, course setters, controllers, and event organisers, technical experts and a myriad of other volunteers engaged on official tasks, have worked tirelessly over the past years to present events that will be demanding and enjoya- ble for the orienteering community. This has been quite a challenging experience for all due to the cancellation of the event in 2020 but I am confident that this national event will meet participants expectations, renew acquaintances between orienteers and leave a lasting pleasant memory of the occasion for all who attend. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the personnel involved in putting on this event, par- ticularly Ron Pallas and Nick Dent who have held all this together over the past year despite all the complications the cancellation involved. A warm welcome to all orienteers and good luck in navigating around the many intricacies of Gumble. Robyn Pallas MAYOR WELCOMES ORIENTEERING COMMUNITY On behalf of the community of Orange I’m delighted to welcome athletes taking part in the annual four-day national orienteering championships carnival. Easter will be an ideal time to come to the central west. By then our distinctly cooler climate will have started to kick in, creating ideal conditions to experience the beauty of the region. Plans to host the event in Orange last year, had to be put on the back-burner due to the pandemic, but this year you can be assured Orange will turn on the warmest of welcomes. Orange has a growing reputation for hosting top line sports events. As well as challenging routes for competitions, there’s so much to do for family members in between events. We are looking forward to Orange being the backdrop for another successful national carnival which continues to display orienteering as a fun option towards active and healthy lifestyles for people across the state. Our local Orienteering club, Goldseekers, has been an active part of our local sporting community for many years, and I know how much they’ll be looking forward to being a part of this event. I look forward to seeing you in Orange. Cr Reg Kidd MAYOR OF ORANGE v01 22 March 2021 5 of 32
COVID SAFETY No programme would be complete without the obligatory recognition of our changing world, we are lucky that we have escaped the devastation of COVID worldwide – however please be mindful of the social distancing requirements and other regulations in place in NSW (https://www.nsw.gov.au/ covid-19/what-you-can-and-cant-do-under-rules), obey all instructions during your stay and help us make this event safe. We will be using the NSW QR code system to log non-participants who attend the events. Please log-in using the QR code on display at Registration and at various points around car parking and the Arenas. A major consequence of COVID is that there will be NO Water provided at Starts and Finishes – and unless you run one of the longer courses, no water on courses. In Molong, April max temperatures are around 22 - 23 deg C, so not too high – please bring enough water for your own needs before, during and after your races. There will also be NO Control Descriptions available at the Starts on any day – please print your own from Eventor. There will be NO Enter On the Day – but luckily we are able to provide some MiniKnat streamered courses for the younger family members – see the information against each day. There will be arena areas at all events and Prize-givings will be held – however we ask that you make sure you maintain social distancing between groups at all times. Be prepared for change – check Eventor for updates before the event just in case revisions to COVID regulations in rural NSW affect our/your plans. Please do not come to this Carnival or any of the events, if you are displaying any COVID 19 symptoms. EMBARGOES All event maps and areas noted in this programme are strictly out of bounds before the carnival. CHANGE OF CLOCKS - SUNDAY MORNING Please note Daylight Saving Time ends on Sunday 4th April at 3am. You get an extra hour of sleep to recover! v01 22 March 2021 6 of 32

Relay runners also need to pick up a Relay bib. CONTROL DESCRIPTIONS See Rule 18.4 OA approved variation above. We will not have Control Descriptions available at the start. They will be available on Eventor for all courses at all events. We plan to upload them to Eventor in the week beginning 22nd March. If you want to have them with you on the course you will need to print them from Eventor. All maps will have International symbol control descriptions only. English control descriptions for Courses 22, 23, 24 & 25 will also be available on Eventor. v01 22 March 2021 9 of 32
MAPS All maps will be printed on Pretex synthetic paper which is water-proof and tear resistant. Maps will be printed using paper sizes to suit the courses, see Page 17. ELECTRONIC PUNCHING The SPORTIdent (SI) “punching” system will be used for all events. SPORTident ActiveCard (SIAC) “punching” will also be available at all events. Regular SPORTident (SI) sticks will work in the same manner as usual. The SIAC AIR+ works in both the classical direct “punching” mode, as well as for contactless tagging. So when SIAC sticks are used, the competitor will have a time-advantage at the control point, as they need only pass close by the control unit and they do not need to insert the finger-stick into the control unit itself. The SIAC battery will always work in direct punching mode even if the battery is empty - direct punching provides a fall-back option to register at controls. In contactless punching mode the SIAC’s optical (flash) and acoustic (beep) feedback signals confirm that a control code and timestamp have been successfully captured. It is therefore very important to use the SIAC Battery Test station before the start to check for sufficient battery reserve (a normal beep) or a warning message if the battery is low. As AIR+ functionality is enabled by the CHECK-process after the chip has been cleared, the CHECK-process is mandatory for all SPORTident AIR+ users. SIAC AIR+ mode can be compromised by disturbances caused by third party equipment, so as a general rule a GPS-watch and SIAC must not be carried on the same arm. If you do not get a confirmation flash/beep from your SIAC stick on the course, you should physically insert your stick into the control unit. If at any time a control unit does not give a confirmation flash/beep, you should use the backup manual pin punch in the area indicated on your map. FINISH PROCEDURES All competitors must insert their SI stick into the finish control. The finish control will not be SIAC Air. You must punch the finish control. All competitors are to report to the finish. After punching the finish control proceed to the download tent and follow instructions. There will be two lanes for download. RESULTS At the Australian Easter 3 days 2021, Living it Live will be a major part in the spectator experience and atmosphere of the event. The extent of this will depend on the Covid 19 restrictions at the time the events are held. There will be live results to wifi in the Arenas and also on the internet, but there will be no results displayed on big screens. http://livingitlive.com.au/live-centre/ for live results and GPS tracking Results will also be available on Eventor against the Easter Carnival listing. v01 22 March 2021 10 of 32
GPS TRACKING Some courses each day will have GPS tracking. GPS trackers will be assigned to selected elites and some runners in other classes. A document with the tracked runners will be on Eventor for each event. If you are assigned a GPS tracker you must carry the tracker, as failure to do so could result in a penalty. Collection of GPS trackers and vest by elites & others can occur on the morning of the event at registration tent. MAP RETURN Competitors maps will not be collected at the finish. All competitors are to respect the idea of “fairness”. Each competitor has a responsibility not to attempt to gain any advantage by looking at another competitor’s map and competitors are not to show their map to anyone who has yet to compete. “All persons taking part in an orienteering event shall behave with fairness and honesty. They shall have a sporting attitude and a spirit of friendship. Competitors shall show respect for each other, for officials, journalists, spectators and the inhabitants of the competition area. The competitors shall be as quiet as possible in the terrain.” COMPLAINTS AND PROTESTS Participants wishing to make a complaint shall lodge this with the registration team no later than 15 minutes after the course closure time or after the results are declared official. The registration team will make a record of the complaint and deliver it to the organiser. Any protest about the outcome of a complaint will also be delivered to the registration team as soon as possible after being notified of the outcome of a complaint. The protest must be in writing and be made on the form provided at Registration. The registration team will contact the appropriate officials to deal with the protest. Complaints, protests and appeals will be handled by the event organiser and jury in accordance with the Competition Rules for Orienteering Australia Foot Orienteering Events. JURY A jury will be selected to deal with any protests from available Level 3 Controllers at the event. WATER OA Rule Variation 19.8 (see above) On Day 2, courses 1,2,3,4 and 6 will have a water control on the course. This water control will be manned and will have one bottle of water for each competitor. Please only touch and drink from one bottle and do not carry the bottle away from the control. If competitors on these courses think that they may need more water, they need to carry this water with them. All other courses on Day 2 and all courses on Day 1 and Day 3 will NOT have water on the course. Any competitor who wants to have water during their course must carry the water with them. Also, any water that you need before you run and after you run, you must bring with you to the event. All walks to the start are less than 1km easy walk from the parking/finish area. We fully understand the implications of this decision for the competitors. However, these are not normal times and we really have no choice but to make this call given the health guidelines that we are operating under. v01 22 March 2021 11 of 32
OUT OF BOUNDS These areas will be clearly marked with OOB signs and black and yellow tape. On Day 2 the walk to the pre start from the fence crossing is 600m along a marked route (red and white streamers). Forest either side of this route is OOB. (See map under Day 2 Start) v01 22 March 2021 12 of 32

TERRAIN The area includes a lot of unusual rock. We strongly encourage you to review the relevant ISOM 2017 map symbols – passable and unpassable cliffs, boulders, boulder clusters, rocky ground, boulder fields – what might be a highly distinctive boulder in another context, might be just part of a boulder field in this context. Some fences are difficult to cross. There are fence crossings (marked )( ) and gates on the map. Some easier-to-cross fences may have no identified crossing points on the map. There are also some old ruined fences – they may be nothing more than bits of wire on the ground – take care. For Courses 24 and 25, grass on some tracks is taller in some places than in others. Where the track is less obvious steamers have been used to make the track clearer. There is quite a bit of fallen timber and “sticky” bushes in places. For this reason, you should consider eye protection. Leg protection is also recommended. There are also quite a lot of grass seeds in recent regrowth, you may want to consider gaiters to keep them out. At the time of recent visits there were a lot of spider’s webs. Our understanding is that they are harmless, although you may want to keep a look out for them. There are a lot of controls in a small area, check the control codes! East to Packham road. MAPPER’S NOTES “Noahs Ark Ridge” Scale 1:7500 The organisers requested a rule variation to enable the map to be used with a map scale of 1:7500. (OA Rules 15.2 and 15.1) This approval has been granted by the Orienteering Australia Mapping Chair. As a result, all courses will have a map scale of 1:7500 except Course 21 which will have a scale of 1:5000. At the time of the field checking (in early 2020) the area was in a severe drought, so vegetation variations are to be expected following the good rain in the 15 months since. This area is a good example of technical Middle-Distance terrain. It was chosen as it has similar rock features to another local map “Pinecliffe” which has intrigued orienteers in the past and proved a successful area. This new area incorporates larger rock formations that are more sustained and contain greater detail. Most importantly it has been mapped because of the unique challenges it offers orienteers through a high-quality orienteering terrain. The predominant feature is the many sloping cliffs. These rise from the west as a small sloping hill or knoll, then drop sharply on the eastern side, often undercut! Expanses of cypress pine reduce the visibility making map contact very important for navigation. Away from the rocky areas the forest is fast, with numerous log piles, earth walls and blackberry thickets occurring. Throughout the rocky areas the mapper was confronted with a terrain deemed unmappable at 1:15000 ISOM 2017 map specifications. Features mapped would not appear obvious on the ground to a competitor at speed. Generalising the rocky terrain would eliminate many of the finer terrain features. Control sites, gaps in impassable cliffs and between passable cliffs, single boulders and terrain shapes would all be compromised. In mapping, standardised ISOM 2017 symbols have been used at a non-compliant scale to legibly show the terrain. In this way, at a 1:7500 scale, the map allows the orienteer to predict oncoming terrain and to maintain confidence across the map. COURSE CLOSURE 14:00 v01 22 March 2021 22 of 32

COURSE NOTES Courses 22 to 25 will have a different start triangle from courses 1 to 21. Taping to each start triangle will be red and white streamers from the start boxes. WATER OA Rule Variation 19.8 (see above) In order to be COVID safe, all competitors need to provide their own water at the event. There will be NO WATER at the start, finish, assembly area or on courses. There will be rubbish bags at the start and finish for competitors’ empty disposable containers and other rubbish. Please do not leave empty water bottles in the forest. There is one exception to this arrangement. One water control will be provided ONLY on Elite Courses 1-4 and 6. This will be between 40 and 60% of the way through courses. Bottled water (300ml) will be supplied, ONE BOTTLE PER COMPETITOR. Please dispose of your bottle at the control in the bin or boxes provided. Do NOT put partially used bottles back with unused bottles. This water is provided to supplement, not to replace competitors own supplies. Water Control Locations: Course 1 - approx. 60%, Course 2 -approx 45%, Course 3 - approx. 65%, Course 4 -approx 45%, Course 6 - approx. 50% SAFETY BEARING East. TERRAIN Eucalypt forest with significant granite features. The majority of the forest is mapped white however there are significant areas of thicker vegetation (mostly light and some medium green) scattered across the map. The thicker vegetation has low visibility and moderate runnability with indistinctly defined boundaries which should be used cautiously for navigation. There are a few small areas of open and semi open land. Full body cover is recommended on ALL courses including beginner courses. There are few tracks and some are quite indistinct in places. Some tracks may have tapes on them in some places where they are used for easier courses. Granite of varying size, shape and density covers a significant portion of the map. Most of the ground is rocky with many areas featuring big clusters of boulders and rockfaces which can significantly slow progress. There are a few large areas of bare rock. The map is undulating with some steep hills with significant rock (mainly in the southern portion) and areas with more moderate slopes (mainly in the northern portion). There are enough areas without rock and green so that it is possible to use micro route choice on some of the less undulating legs to avoid obstacles and move quite quickly. There are a few fences. There will be fence crossings marked on the map, it is NOT compulsory to use these crossings. Fence crossings are marked with a crossing point symbol on the map in purple )( and with red and white tape in the terrain. v01 22 March 2021 25 of 32
WARNINGS Eye protection is recommended. Ankle protection would also be useful and strongly advised if you have any history of ankle injuries. MAPPERS NOTES “Gumble Pinnacles” At the time of the field checking the area was in a severe drought so vegetation variations should be expected following good rain. Fieldwork: Clearings and cleared areas had changed. Many smaller clearings have overgrown so were deleted. Other new ones were added. All larger cleared areas had changed so that boundaries had to be remapped and forest or scattered trees added. Slower vegetation had significant growth. The forest can be relatively slower than what the average Orienteer is familiar with. In areas that were forest, normal running (white) on the original map, vast areas of regrowth cypress, or die-back wattle with scattered branches have occurred. Vehicle Tracks and Paths are rare on this map. Those that do occur were checked and either modified or deleted. Most were downgraded to “Indistinct” or a “Ride” as they had become overgrown or degenerated. In field checking the rock some changes were made to the way the rock was drawn to be more compliant with ISOM 2017, however some non-compliant features remain. Boulders: Shaped small to medium boulders (not ISOM2017 compliant) have NOT been modified and do occur across the map! Boulder field symbols on the original map were usually hand-drawn and vary somewhat in sizing depending on neighbouring boulders. In most cases these “triangle shapes” were left in place to maintain the terrain interpretation. However, their shape has been altered to resemble ISOM standard triangle (side ratio of 8:6:5). Some were replaced with the ISOM standard single symbol 208 (100% or 120%). Occasionally both the triangle and the rocks being represented were too small so were converted to “rocky ground” dots to assimilate into surrounding rocky ground already shown. Rocky Ground interpretation and symbols remain. Some alterations to maintain gaps or add unmapped areas of rocky ground has occurred. These are not always ISOM compliant. Symbol 202 “Cliffs Without Tags” was converted to ISOM thus increasing their profile and the ends of the base line rounded. This change reduced the minimum gaps between other cliffs or boulder features. Symbol 201 & 206 “Impassable Cliff” & “Gigantic Boulder, Massive Cliff” features in the terrain were visited but generally were unchanged. This included maintaining the original artwork of tapered black shape and width. COURSE CLOSURE 14:30 v01 22 March 2021 26 of 32

Please be responsible and ensure you maintain the required 1.5m separation from other competitors wherever possible. TERRAIN & MAPPER’S NOTES See Day 2 Gumble Pinnacles is renowned for its complex granite detail. The terrain on the courses will pass through open runnable forest and paddocks, and areas of denser forest with low visibility and slower running. The majority of the area is strewn with complex rock detail, with some areas of vague rock-free rolling hills. COURSE NOTES There is a taped route on the easy course, this is not compulsory. This is marked on the easy course map but will not appear on any other course maps. This is marked on the map with a dashed line in purple and with pink tape in the terrain. There are a number of fence crossings on the map in areas where the fences are tricky to cross. These crossings are not compulsory, but time may be lost crossing the fences in other locations. Fence crossings are marked with a crossing point symbol on the map in purple )( and with red and white tape in the terrain. See photo on the next page. v01 22 March 2021 27 of 32
SAFETY BEARING From the open forest block the safety bearing is south back to the arena. From the dense forest block head east to the open forest then south to the arena. The very easy course does not cross any fences. WARNINGS Eye protection is recommended.
