COLAC PRIMARY SCHOOL KINDNESS HONESTY PERSONAL BEST COURAGE RESPECT TOLERANCE NEWSLETTER – April 23rd, 2020 Dear families, Newsletter format: Each week we are trying a new newsletter format. This is an opportunity to involve students and families in discussing what works best and helping us decide what changes we will make when school resumes in a more traditional sense. We are asking students and families to consider things like: Is the layout easy to follow? Do they like the way the photos are displayed? Do they like a booklet style or news-sheet style? Is there enough colour? What type of articles do they like best? We will survey students and parents later in the term, so keep a lookout for the different presentations you will see each week. Remote learning progress: It has been so lovely for teachers to receive positive feedback during phone calls to families. A reminder that if you are finding things challenging, please reach out to your child’s classroom teacher. Please remember that we don’t expect you to become teachers; what we hope is that during this challenging time you simply know that your best is good enough. Continue to love and support your children, engage in the learning the best way you can and know that there is no right or wrong – we will all approach this differently and the way that you approach it will be the best approach for your child/ren. Keep up the great work that you are doing at home – we appreciate every one of you and your efforts. Zart Art: Don’t forget the Zart Art competition that is running at the moment. The details have been provided by our Art teacher Jane McGuane through Compass. Please send photos of your work through to Mrs McGuane and we will display these for when you return to school and through our newsletters where we can This week’s fairy garden has been made by Milly L. Well done Milly! Shelby Papadopoulos Principal

Gardening News with Mrs Rosevear Lots of things are happening in the vegetable garden even though you’re not here! The worms in the worm farms are increasing at a rapid rate and will be ready for your fruit scraps soon. We have lots of leafy greens and the broad beans are erupting from the ground. . Some of you may now have vegetable gardens at home now. Here’s a list of what can be planted in April: Asian greens, asparagus, beetroot, broad beans, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, chives, garlic, kohlrabi, leeks, lettuce, mint, oregano, peas, radish, rocket, rosemary, shallots, silver beet, sorrel, spinach, spring onions, swede, thyme and turnips. Don't forget to watch Dirtgirl World on ABC TV, daily at 1.55pm or on IVIEW Rosemary is the herb of remembrance, it is said that the smell can increase your memory. I picked some rosemary from our garden and made a wreath for Anzac Day. You could do this too. Just use a branch from your backyard and hold it together with string. Attach any leaves or flowers with string and you will have your own wreath!
COLAC PRIMARY SCHOOL KINDNESS HONESTY PERSONAL BEST COURAGE RESPECT TOLERANCE Library News from Mrs Briffa It’s ANZAC week and Hi to all my Library students & your families, ANZAC DAY is this Saturday the 25th April. It will be different this year but I believe we can still find ways to honour the courage & bravery of our ANZACS. I hope you have enjoyed watching the ANZAC book videos on the Story Box Library website. We are all adjusting to a new way of learning so if you have any issues you are welcome to email me. I also hope students are engaging well with the Library tasks and activities. Remember to write or keep an example of your work in your general workbook or you can email me as well if you like! I have had some surprise emails this week with fantastic responses to the Library tasks. Thank you to the parents and to the students who have shared their work. Grades Prep, Grade 1 and Grade 2 have read ‘ANZAC Ted’ by Belinda Landsberry - with a choice of ANZAC Activities. The ‘ANZAC medal for an unsung hero!” activity has been a popular choice so far. Blake’s medal award was for, ‘good mateship’ – an excellent choice of words Blake! Milly in Prep has been very creative and made her very own medal – great job Milly! Some Grade 3 / 4 ‘Lone Pine’ tasks such as letters & diary entries, may require some revising & editing – so keep up the good work at home until you are pleased with your response. Grade 5 & 6 have been doing activities based on ‘One Minute’s Silence’ by David Menzenthen. Wednesday morning, I received an impressive ‘One Minute Tribute’ to a soldier. This soldier is a relative to one of our grade 6 students & her family. This is a wonderful example of how we can honour the courage & bravery of our soldiers and loved ones. Thank you Wiki for sharing this heartfelt tribute. Thank you to everyone at home for doing your best & for adjusting to the changes. Take very good care and hope you have a special ANZAC Day. Kind regards PE Report with Mr T I must say it has been wonderful to see so many photos and videos of students undertaking some sort of learning or physical activity from home. I have been SO IMPRESSED at the way nothing has stopped you from getting outside. We have had some people riding bikes, shooting/passing the netball or basketball, student Olympics, gym circuits, going for walks as well as others completing the ‘Skipping Challenge’. To all of the students/parents/carers sending me an explanation of what has been happening at home, KEEP IT UP!

COLAC PRIMARY SCHOOL KINDNESS HONESTY PERSONAL BEST COURAGE RESPECT TOLERANCE Under the Grill with Mr Till During this time of uncertainty, I have come up with the idea that a lot of our students and parents/carers may be interested to learn about the staff at the BEST school in Colac. The staff are missing all of the students a lot as we haven’t seen each other for some time, and this is one way we can communicate with you all at home and hopefully put a smile on your face. Name: Miss Baulch What is your Position/Role at Colac Primary School? I teach Prep and Grade 1 in Room 2. How long have you been in your role? This is my second year. What do you love about your role? Getting to teach some pretty awesome kids (and getting to hang out with MRS Tillack!) What is the best thing about CPS? All the people at CPS are kind, friendly and lots of fun to be around. Where did you grow up and go to school? Tell us about your younger years. I grew up in Colac and went to school at Sacred Heart Primary School. I used to play netball, basketball and do dancing. I was always a goody-two-shoes at school, always listening to my teacher and going above and beyond with my learning! Can you give the CPS students some advice that you can share from your days as a student? Try your very best at everything you do and always be kind. What is your favourite holiday destination and why? Hmmm, hard question. I would have to go with my biggest holiday to New Caledonia. I went on a cruise to some beautiful islands last year, the weather was amazing, the scenery was incredible and it was so relaxing. What is your favourite food and drink? My favourite food to eat is chocolate!! Favourite drink would have to be a good cup of tea (I drink lots of cups each day!) What are some of your favourite things to do outside of school? (Hobbies or Interests) Read, play with my dog Gus, go for walks, catch up with friends and watch Netflix. What is the first thing you are going to do once we get back to normal? HUG EVERYBODY! Probably spend time with my family and friends who I have not seen in ages. I believe you are an avid Essendon supporter, how many games do you get to a year and who is your favourite player? My Dad and I are Essendon members so we get down to most home games. Very tough to choose a favourite player but I’d have to go with Dyson Heppell. What was the biggest challenge for you teaching our ‘young people’ last year? Getting carried away having a good chat and laugh when we should be learning! Or squeezing so much learning into such a small amount of time. Thankyou for your time and being a part of our wonderful school community!
