Welcome to Spring Camp-o-ree 2022! In honor of the Winter Olympic Games which are taking place this year, our Camp-o-ree will have an Olympic theme. Thus, we are calling it the Coastal Georgia Olymp-o-ree. We hope you have a fantastic time at this year's Olymp-o-ree and that your scouts enjoy the games we have put together for them. The games and competitions will require scouts to use the scout skills that they have learned as well as teamwork and fun. We ask that each troop bring at least one copy of this guide on a clipboard. It will provide you a description of the games in case you have questions. Scouts are also encouraged to have their Scout Handbooks available as well. Patrols Participating scouts should be organized into patrols of 4-6 scouts. Some competitions will be difficult to complete with less than 4 and more than 6 will leave some without a way to participate. Patrol Spirit is one of the main themes and an ongoing competition at the Olymp-o- ree, so every patrol should have a patrol name, patrol flag, and patrol yell. Displaying your patrol spirit throughout the weekend is highly encouraged. Registration Registration closes on March 11, 2022 and will cost $20 per scout and $15 per adult. If you register before February 25, you will receive the “Early Bird” special and save $5 per person registered. To register for the Olymp-o-ree, please visit the Coastal Georgia Council website at: https://scoutingevent.com/099-Camporee If you need assistance with registration, please contact the Camp-o-ree Chairman, Alan Wendel at awendel@glynn.k12.ga.us Check-In Friday, March 25, 5:00pm to 8:30pm - The Scout Master and SPL should be the only Troop representatives at the check-in/registration table. Campsites will be assigned at check-in and will be determined by the number of campers in each Troop. Please be Kind and Courteous to our Staff as they do their best to facilitate a fun event for you and your scouts. Check-Out The final event of the Olymp-o-ree will be our Closing Ceremony and Awards Presentation on Sunday morning. Following the ceremony, please clean-up your campsites and have a safe journey home. See you next year! Scout Spirit Scout Spirit is the core of everything we do as Scouts and Scouters. It is the embodiment of the Scout Oath and Scout Law, and it is the cheerful and positive attitude displayed in all we do. Scout Spirit is the beacon that sets Scouting apart from other youth activities. It is an expectation that all those participating in the Olymp-o-ree be ambassadors of the Scouting Spirit in all we do.
Campsites The Olymp-o-ree will be held at Camp Tolochee: 133 Ashley Marsh Drive, Brunswick, GA 31523. Troop/Crew campsites will be assigned upon arrival Friday evening. Don’t forget to keep your campsite clean! Staff will make rounds inspecting campsites during afternoon competitions. The inspection guidelines are in this packet. Leave no trace is (as always) in effect for this activity. Make sure you leave nothing – holes in the ground, trash, or ANYTHING! Parking Troop trailers will be permitted to be parked at campsites and the towing vehicle can remain in the campsite with the trailer. All other vehicles will be permitted to enter camp to drop off equipment but must then be parked in in the parking lot at the entrance to Camp Tolochee. All vehicles should be parked in the parking lot by 9:00pm on Friday night (with the exception of vehicles attached to trailers). Any vehicles that are in campsites after 9:00pm will result in a 10 point penalty per vehicle. Due to limited parking space, carpooling and ride sharing is HIGHLY encouraged. Campfire Ceremonies As a part of our Olympic theme, we will having an Opening Ceremony on Friday night, a Campfire Celebration on Saturday night, and a Closing Ceremony/Awards Presentation on Sunday morning. Patrols will receive 10 points for participating in Saturday’s Campfire Celebration with a song or skit. Sign-up for participation will be at Friday’s Cracker Barrel. Patrol spirit is highly encouraged at all campfire ceremonies. Clothing/Uniforms Class A uniforms are recommended for Friday’s Opening Ceremony. A class B or activity uniform is appropriate for all events on Saturday and Sunday. Costumes or matching patrol “Olympic uniforms” are encouraged as a part of your Patrol Spirit score. Remember that no weapons, real, simulated, or otherwise will be permitted. Since this will be a friendly competition, leave your weapons at home. Equipment Pack with everything you would bring on an ordinary campout. Troop trailers will be allowed to remain in the campsite. Troops/scouts will need to provide their own tents and personal camping equipment. Campfires Campsites can use the designated fire rings in their sites, propane stoves and grills for meals or charcoal for grilling or Dutch Oven cooking if a metal tray is used for containment. All these sources of flame should be clearly marked and away from tent areas.
Meals Troops will provide their own meals. Due to the competition schedule, it is recommended that adult leaders prepare the meals while the scouts are competing to help save time. Please clean up after every meal and dispose of trash properly. All proper food storage guidelines should be followed. Wildlife is a major factor at Camp Tolochee. There will be a Cracker Barrel following Friday’s Opening Ceremony. Everyone is encouraged to bring snacks to share with everyone else. Everyone should provide their own mess kits. Available Facilities There are facilities available for use including restrooms and showers. Some of the campsites have tables while others do not, so you will need to bring your own tables as necessary. There are spigots of potable water however, the water has a small sulfur smell. Nothing new for most of us but we want to make sure everyone is aware. Please collect, contain, and remove all of your own garbage and others that you may find. Each troop may want to consider supplying sufficient toilet paper for each of its members...just in case. Troops will be responsible for ensuring the bath houses are clean. (Poor bath house maintenance may reflect on campsite inspection) Medical Forms/Youth Protection Scoutmasters/Adult Advisors MUST bring medical consent forms (Parts A, B1 & B2) for all participating Scouts/Venturers. Have these forms ready to be reviewed at check-in. Scouts/Ventures without medical forms will not be able to participate. Unit leaders are responsible for assuring both attending adults and scouts are properly clothed for the conditions and that they stay hydrated throughout the day. BSA Medical Forms can be found here: https://filestore.scouting.org/filestore/HealthSafety/pdf/680-001_AB.pdf Scoutmasters are also responsible for assuring that all adults with their troop are up-to-date on YPT. Confirmation of Medical Forms and YPT Status will be included with your registration form at check-in. Trading Post The Trading Post will be open during non-mealtime hours on Saturday. They will have the basic necessities for sale as well as scout items, assorted candy, snacks, and drinks. Staff Troops 224 and 248 will be hosting this year's Olymp-o-ree. Please always be respectful of our adult and youth staff members and follow all directions accordingly. If you have any concerns or problems, please contact the Camp-o-ree Chairman (Contact Information below). We will need a Troop/Crew to host next year’s camp-o-ree. Don’t miss out of this great opportunity for your unit!
Campsite Inspection Staff will walk the campsites during the event time on Saturday to perform campsite inspections. Every troop or crew’s campsite will be scored using the scoresheet included in this packet. A maximum of 65 points may be awarded during the inspection. Each patrol in a unit will be given the same score as the unit. i.e. Troop 1 has two patrols: the Bats and Cats. The Troop’s score is a 54 out of 65 points. Both the Bats and the Cats receive 54 points for their campsite inspection score. The troop/crew with the highest campsite inspection score will receive the Best Campsite Award. Cracker Barrel/SPL Meeting There will be a Cracker Barrel in the Dining Hall following Friday night’s Opening Ceremony. Everyone is invited to attend. Please bring snacks to share. This will be a great time for fellowship and sharing our “Olympic Spirit.” During the Cracker Barrel, there will also be a SPL Meeting in Fendig Hall. All Scoutmasters and SPLs should attend this meeting. In addition to general announcements and guidelines, this SPL meeting will be when the final patrol rosters are turned in. It is very important that final rosters are turned in by this meeting so that preparations can be made for Saturday’s competitions. Once patrols are set, they cannot be changed later on. Please do not expect that your new patrol that fell apart sometime mid-morning, will get combined with another patrol for scores. REMINDER: Without adult leaders, these events will not take place. As with the rest of Scouting, the success of this event depends entirely on volunteer effort. Please help out if you can. Olymp-o-ree Events All patrols are encouraged to compete in all events in order to receive the highest score. While this is a competition, the objective is to practice your scout skills while having fun. Please keep a positive attitude at all times and remember that a scout is KIND and COURTEOUS. We are all winners in Scouts. Archery • Patrols will be provided with arrows and bows • Each patrol will receive 5 arrows for practice shots at the target. No score will be given for practice shots. • After everyone has finished their 5 practice shots, the rangemaster will announce that the range is cold and everyone will go down range to collect their arrows. • Everyone will then reassemble at the firing line and each patrol member will shoot 5 arrows again. • Of these five arrows, the rangemaster will assign a score based on the 2 best shots out of the 5 shots for every patrol member. • The score from everyone’s 2 best shots will be added together and divided by the number of patrol members to determine the patrol’s overall score. • Gold will be awarded to the patrol with the highest overall score. Compass Course • Patrols will need to provide their own compasses, paper, and pencil. • No electronics (phones, GPS devices, etc) will be allowed. • There will be a straight-line compass course with lettered target posts. • Each patrol will be given a unique course coordinate chart and time will start when they begin the course. • They will fill in the letters of the target posts that correspond with their coordinate chart as they complete the course. • Scoring will be based on time and accuracy of course navigation. Time penalties will be added for every incorrect letter target. • Gold will be awarded to the patrol with the fastest time.
Knot Decathlon • All rope and hitching posts will be provided. • Patrol members will run from Point A to the Knot Bar one at a time in a relay race. • At the Knot Bar, a staff member will ask the patrol member to tie a knot. They must tie the knot correctly before running back to Point A to tag the next patrol member. • Time will stop once the last patrol member successfully ties the 10th knot and returns to Point A. • Every patrol member must tie at least 1 knot. • No patrol member may tie more than 3 knots. • Knot diagrams will be provided but patrols that practice knot typing prior to the competition will have the fastest time. • Gold will be awarded to the patrol with the fastest time. Knots will be tied in the following order: Square knot, Two Half Hitches, Clove Hitch, Figure Eight knot, Bowline, Sheet Bend, Overhand knot, Tautline knot, Lark’s Head, Timber Hitch String Burn • Patrols should bring their own flint and steel and dry fire starting materials. • Matches, lighter fluid, and lighters are not allowed. • The staff will prepare an empty fire ring surrounded by 2 stakes. On the stakes will be tied 2 strings. • The first string will be 12 inches from the ground, this is the maximum height of your kindling and fire wood. • The 2nd string will be 18 inches from the ground. This is the string that your fire must burn. • Once time begins, the patrol will build a small fire, being sure to remain under the height of the 1st string. Scouts may collect kindling and fire materials from the surrounding area. • Only a flint and steel can be used to start the fire. • The fire can be fed as needed, but all materials must stay below the height of the 1st string. • Time will stop once the 2nd string has caught fire and burned in half. • Gold will be awarded to the patrol with the fastest time.
First Aid Trail The patrols will test their knowledge of First Aid along a short trail. The trail will consist of three First Aid scenarios which will be from Tenderfoot to First Class requirements. The scenarios will focus on athletic and outdoor injuries that could occur during the Olympics. Scouts must find, provide, or simulate all needed materials. Bringing a basic first aid kit is recommended. The instructor will give the patrol the first scenario that they will have to properly address per knowledge in the Boy Scout Handbook. When the scenario is complete, the patrol will move on to the second scenario and then the third. The instructor will complete a score card based on the quality of the treatment and the accuracy of all of the First Aid steps. For each scenario, the patrol will be graded on the following criteria: • Properly follow the steps of First Aid • Assess the area • Check that the victim is awake and needs help • Call/Send for help • Assess the victim’s injury(ies) • Treat for shock if needed • Correct treatment for the injury • Transport the victim back to the trailhead safely The goal is quality NOT quantity. Speed is NOT a factor. Once all 3 scenarios have been completed, the scores will be totaled to determine the overall score. Gold will be awarded to the patrol with the highest overall score. Kim’s Game Memory/observational game in which the scouts have one minute to identify all the items presented on a table. • An undisclosed number of items will be placed on a table under a sheet • Once the sheet is removed, the patrol will have one minute to observe and remember as many items as possible. • After one minute, the items will be recovered with the sheet and the patrol will be asked to recall which items they saw. • Gold will be awarded to the patrol that remembers the most items. 8
Flagpole Building The Patrol must build a structure to raise the Olympic flag higher than 15 feet. The patrols will be provided all materials including two 10 ft poles, rope and lashing, stakes, mallet, and an Olympic flag. • The instructor will explain the build and provide guidelines/instructions. • Time will start once the instructor has finished and the patrol begins constructing their flagpole • Proper knots and lashings should be used. The instructor may ask patrols to redo any component that is not constructed correctly. • Once the pole has been built, erected, and secured, the Olympic flag should be raised on the pole. • Time will stop once the Olympic flag reaches the top. • Gold will be awarded to the patrol with the fastest time Instructions The patrol must lash together a structure to raise their Olympic flag higher than 15 feet. All knots and lashings must be of the correct type and tied correctly for the structure used. The flag should be raised using a flagline that is attached to the pole. Time will stop once the flag reaches the top. 9
Olympic Torch Relay This relay race will take place after all other events have concluded. All patrols will race at the same time. If needed, there may be several heats ran and then a final championship race. This race will consist of several legs. Each patrol will have an Olympic “torch” that they will carry through each leg of the race. • When the “Go” signal is given, patrol members will race to complete various legs of the relay race, all while carrying their unlit torch. Each leg will present a different challenge to overcome. • Once a patrol member has completed their leg of the race, they will pass the torch to next patrol member. • Upon receiving the torch, this member will race to complete their leg of the race. • The last patrol member will be waiting with a lighter. Upon receiving the torch, this last patrol member will light the torch and then carefully carry it to the finish line. • If the torch should go out, the patrol member has to return to their starting point, relight the torch, and try again. • Gold will be awarded to the first patrol to cross the finish line with a lit torch. 10
Olymp-o-ree Scoring Event Points Each patrol will receive 1 point for every event that they compete in. In addition to this participation point, patrols may also earn an additional point per event for having their Patrol Flag with them at the event. They can also earn an additional point by offering the staff an Olympic Peace Offering (aka can of Dr. Pepper). Finally, patrols who place in the top 3 for each event will earn 8 points for Gold, 6 points for Silver, and 4 points for Bronze. Campsite Inspection Points Each campsite will be inspected and scored on a 65 point range per the inspection sheet. Staff will walk the campsites during the event time on Saturday. During this time, these Staffers will judge and score the campsites as a whole unit (not the individual patrols). Each patrol in a unit will be given the same score as the unit. Campfire Celebration Participation Points Every patrol that performs a song or skit in Saturday night’s Campfire Celebration will receive 10 points. Patrols should sign-up to participate at Friday night’s Cracker Barrel. Patrol Spirit Award Throughout the Olymp-o-ree, staff will be looking for which patrol shows the most patrol spirit. Patrol spirit consists of having a patrol flag and yell, having costumes or “Olympic uniforms”, displaying a fun and positive attitude, and most of all, demonstrating the Scout Oath and Scout Law throughout the weekend. The patrol who shows the most Patrol Spirit will receive the Patrol Spirit Award and will receive an additional 10 points.
