THREE DIVISIONS: Three different levels of competition are planned so that Troops and their Scouts can enter patrols in the division that gives them the fairest opportunity. The BEAR division will be limited to patrols where all the Scouts in the patrol are of First Class rank or lower. This division is intended to allow the less experienced Scouts to demonstrate their skills and leadership abilities without having to compete directly with much more experienced and physically stronger Scouts. The HAWK division is open to all Scouts many of whom may be competing in their 4th or 5th Klondike. Scouts of First Class rank or below may be members of a HAWK division patrol. Hawk division patrols will be expected to demonstrate a higher level of expertise, teamwork and leadership. The WEBELOS 2 division is open to any Webelos 2 Dens which would like to participate. Webelos dens which do not have a Klondike sled can participate by using a conventional sled, but they will not be able to take part in the sled Slalom event. CLOTHING POLICY: The Klondike Derby is a full day outdoor winter event held at a location that is usually several degrees colder and much windier than the general Capital District. Patrol leaders should conduct a winter clothing training session with Scouts as part of their Derby preparations. A list of suggested clothing is included in this packet. Patrol members who are not properly prepared for the weather will not be allowed to compete. No exceptions. Cotton is NOT acceptable for outdoor winter activities. Anyone wearing cotton long underwear, jeans, sweatpants or sweatshirts may be barred from competing. A pre-start clothing and sled check is part of the final registration of each patrol. Any patrol that does not meet the minimum requirements of the clothing and sled check will not be allowed to compete in the Klondike Derby. No sled checks will be conducted at Seneca. PARKING: All vehicles must be parked in the upper lot at Rotary Scout Reservation. A limited number of 4-wheel drive and off road vehicles will be used inside the Camp to support the Derby events. Adult leaders or senior Scouts should ESCORT ill or injured Scouts to the “Governor of the Klondike Derby” stationed at 2020 Yankee Doodle District Klondike Derby
Seneca Lodge. A BEAR or HAWK patrol may continue its competition without an ill or injured Scout as long as it still has a minimum of four Scouts in the Patrol. ADULT LEADERS: Patrols are encouraged to operate independently, with no input from anyone who is not a patrol member. Senior Scouts and Adult leaders may follow the progress of any Patrol in their Troop. However, senior Scouts who are not part of a Patrol and adult leaders may not participate in or assist a patrol with any Derby event at any time. Klondike Derby Mayors are authorized to adjust Patrol scores anytime they feel that an unfair advantage has been provided by a senior Scout (that is not a member of the Patrol) or by an adult. 6 2018 KLONDIKE DERBY: PATROL REQUIRED EQUIPMENT AND SCORING DERBY SCORING: At each Klondike Derby station the leader in charge will give the Patrol a problem to solve. The details of these problems are below. Scoring will be based on the time it takes to execute the task.Times will be averaged so that an eight Scout Patrol can compete with a four Scout Patrol. Patrols which work well together should have the best times. KNOT TYING: At each station the patrol will also be give a basic Scout knot to tie. Patrols will earn 1 to 10 points at each station based on how many members of the patrol correctly tie the assigned knot. All the scouts must simultaneously tie the assigned knot with rope they brought with them. Scouts may not help each other on the knots. Knots must be tied around a pole or tree it that is their purpose. FIRST AID: At each station the patrol will be given a basic first aid question to answer. The patrol will earn from one to 10 points based on the completeness of the answer. REQUIRED PATROL EQUIPMENT Sled with a harness for up to 7 handles Compass, Shovel First Aid Kit and other safety materials Sleeping Pad, Tarp Rope, assorted lengths and thickness, at least one coil 50’ long Firewood Sleeping bag(s) and/or blankets 4 Scout Staves (6 foot) A 5-foot piece of rope per Scout for knot tying clothes/gloves/hats/extra socks Metal Fire Pan with provision to keep it off the ground Cook kit with cooking utensils Matches and homemade fire starters (no liquid starters) Individual eating utensils Hot lunch for each Patrol member plus extra for Judge Trash bags and other clean up supplies Water, at least one quart for each Patrol member Waterproof bag to use as bear bag Within reason, Patrols may bring whatever additional supplies they feel would be beneficial in helping them solve the Klondike Derby problems. Remember, whatever they bring they have to haul on their sled for the entire Klondike Derby and have on the sled during the sled race. No liquid fire starters or batteries are allowed. 2020 Yankee Doodle District Klondike Derby
2018 KLONDIKE DERBY The task: Your patrol is on a challenging outdoor trek through the wilderness. On this trek you must overcome all obstacles that you encounter, help anyone that is in need, and safely reach your destination. If you demonstrate that you are worthy of this competition, you will maneuver your sled up and down steep hills, climb over tall obstacles, build a shelter in which you can comfortably weather a blizzard, rescue fair damsels from the icy clutches of a frozen lake, feed said damsels a gourmet hot meal, secure your food from rampaging bears, and race through deep snow around or under or over obstacles in your path. The rewards for well executed teamwork are priceless. #1 CLOTHING AND SLED INSPECTION In order to register and compete in the Derby, a Patrol must first demonstrate that each member is properly clothed (including some spare clothing) for a day of active outdoor winter activity. The Patrol must also present for inspection a fully loaded and properly secured sled containing all the equipment necessary to complete all of the Klondike Derby events. It is not the responsibility of the Derby staff to determine if the Patrol has packed all the needed items, but rather to ensure that what is packed has been properly secured. EACH Patrol will be checked for proper and adequate clothing prior to registration. Cotton is NOT acceptable for outdoor winter activities. An anyone wearing cotton long underwear, jeans, sweatpants or sweatshirts may be barred from competing. Patrols not meeting the minimum requirements will not be allowed to compete. EACH member of the Patrol must have: Insulated and waterproof boots (leather boots are probably not waterproof) Warm hat that covers the ears Warm water repellent mittens or gloves Wind resistant/water repellent outer clothing Layer style dress: polypropylene, wool, fleece or other wicking material Extra clothing (at least hat, socks, gloves) Personal water supply, and Drinking cup for hot chocolate Any patrol that does not pass will be allowed to resolve the problem and present itself for re- inspection at any time before the Derby begins. Each Patrol must pass the inspection in order to register and compete in the Derby. GRADED EVENTS #2 SNOWSHOE RELAY TASK: Your patrol is caught in a snow slide. Most of the equipment is lost. The snow is waist deep and the only means of transportation is on snow shoes. Fortunately you have discovered snowshoes that you can use to escape. This is a relay race. The first Scout in the patrol puts on a pair of snowshoes and goes on the start command. That Scout will race to the halfway point on snowshoes, turn around and return. He will then pass the snowshoes to the next Scout who will don them and execute the same course until all Scouts have completed the race. GRADING: The combined times will be averaged based on the number of Scouts in the patrol. Patrols which work well together and smoothly, having each Scout ready to go and working out in advance how to take off and put on the snow shoes should get the best score. 2020 Yankee Doodle District Klondike Derby
#3 SLED HILL SLALOM TASK: A snowstorm is coming and your patrol needs to move out in order to get back to camp before the blizzard hits. You've got to move your sled quickly up and down a hill, without losing control of the sled. Grading: The Patrol score at this station will depend half on how quickly the Patrol completes the course. You must negotiate the course while ensuring that all patrol members are safe. The Judges will be looking for the safety of the patrol members at all times. Patrols which work together and plan their task will do better. Grading will be based on the time it takes to complete the task and the number of patrol members involved. FIRE BUILDING AND TRAIL LUNCH WILL BE COMBINED AT ONE LOCATION. IT WILL BE GRADED AS TWO SEPARATE PROBLEMS. 1) HOW WELL THE FIRE WAS BUILT? and 2) HOW WELL THE MEAL WAS PREPARED? #4 FIRE BUILDING TASK: This is a timed event. Patrols will be scored on their ability to build and start a fire and to bring the snow in a #10 can to a boil. If no snow is available Patrols will need to boil two cups of water. Tinder, kindling and fuel may come from the Patrol sled or from natural dead and down material. Extra points will be awarded to Patrols that use some or only natural materials. The use of liquid fuels or lighters, battery powered starters, or commercially made fire starters are not allowed. Homemade fire-starters are allowed. Fires may only be constructed on a raised platform such as a trashcan lid or metal tray. NO GROUND FIRES! Do not start building the fire until you have been assigned a judge and the judge informs you it is OK to start. To do well, a Patrol will need to well organized with each member having a job to do and carry. A well-led Patrol will practice and know their assignments ahead of time. As with all Klondike Derby events, idle Patrol members without assigned duties will probably hurt the Patrol’s ability to score well. The snow that is boiled for this event may be used when preparing the trail lunch if the Patrol so desires. Grading: Based on time from start of building fire to time the snow is melted and boiling. Mandatory deduction of 5 points will be imposed if any fuel is tripped from living vegetation. 80 Extra points: Patrol uses only naturally occurring dead and down fuel. No fuel from the sled. 50 Bonus points if the Patrol starts their fire with flint and steel. 30 Bonus points if at least half of the fuel used is naturally occurring dead and down. 20 Bonus points if only one match is used to start fire. 2020 Yankee Doodle District Klondike Derby
#5 TRAIL LUNCH Proper food (fuel for the body) is very important during any strenuous outdoor winter activity. At midday all Patrols will prepare their noon meal at the same location as the fire building competition. Check in with the site leader and you will be assigned a judge for your meal preparation event. Do not begin until your judge gives you the go ahead. Patrols will be judged on their skill in building a cooking fire, the adequacy of the meal they plan (should contain at least one item from each of the four basic food groups), their skill in preparing the meal, clean up and overall teamwork. Scouts are expected to practice low impact camping, leaving behind no trace of their meal preparation activity. Bring a garbage bag (pack it in – pack it out). Patrols can decide their own menu, however it needs to be hot and should consist of a hot drink, hot soup and a serving of carbohydrates (bread, pasta, potatoes, etc.) One-dish meals are acceptable as are portioned boil a bag rations. The meal must consist of sufficient liquid nourishment to keep the body properly hydrated. Prepare an extra portion so that your judge is able to sample your work. Patrols may use solid fuel from their sleds and homemade non-liquid fire starters. Stoves are not allowed. Grading: Patrols will earn points based on the quality of their meal. A bag lunch with a hot drink earns 10 points A hot lunch with a hot drink will earn 20 points. A hot lunch which includes a carbohydrates, fruit or vegetsables and protein component will earn 30 points. A Lunch ready to eat in less than 30 minutes will earn an additional 10 points. Patrols will lose 5 points for each minute over 30 it takes to prepare lunch. Well organized patrols which have planned for this event should earn the maximum amount of points. #6 ICE RESCUE TASK:This is a timed event. The Patrol has to take a shortcut across a frozen lake to avoid a popular and heavily used snowmobile trail. As they near the dam on the other side the ice begins to crack and move. Quickly the Patrol tries to make if to shore with the sled. However, one member of the Patrol does not make it and falls through the ice. The patrol must use items on the sled to rescue the Patrol member stuck on the ice by throwing him a line with a bowline knot tied in the end. GRADING: This is a timed event. Patrols which are organized will perform more quickly. The fastest patrol gets the highest score. The rope must have a bowline tied in the end so the stranded Scout can put it over his shoulders. 2020 Yankee Doodle District Klondike Derby
#7 BEAR BAG TASK: This is a time event. The Patrol is camping on the trail deep in the Yukon wilderness. Before retiring for the night, hey must secure their food and other “smellables” so wild animals will not consume them during the night. To do this the Patrol must hang a bear bag from a tree. They may do this e hanging the bag from a strong limb of a tree. In either case, the bag must be at least twelve feet off the ground and at least six feet from surrounding trees, including trees from which the bag is hung. The rope must also be positioned so a passing bear will not run into it. Grading: The score is based on the time it takes to hang the bear bag at the approprite height and distance from other trees. Time starts when the patrol leader indicates they are ready to begin. The patrol that is well prepared should have the fastest time. #8 TOMAHAWK THROW TASK: Your patrol has been challenged to a test of skill. Each member of the patrol must throw the tomohawk three times. Take your time and make sure the tomahawk stays on target. GRADING: Scores will be based on the highest number of target sticks averaged out by the number of scouts in the patrol. #9 FIRST AID: At each Station the patrol will be asked a basic first aid question. The patrols will receive a score of 1 to 10 points based on the completeness of the answer. #10 KNOT TYING Each Patrol will be asked to demonstrate one knot (assigned by the Mayor) at each Town other than #4 (fire building) and #5 (lunch). All the scouts are to simultaneously tie the assigned knot with rope they brought with them. Scouts may not help each other on the knots. ALL knots must be tied around a pole or tree. The score will be the fraction of the patrol that correctly completed the knot times 10, for a maximum of 10 points at each town. The sum of the 6 scores will be the knot score. #11 SLED RACE The Sled Race is not a scored event in the Klondike Derby. Instead, it is a separate competition for a trophy. Instead, it is separate competition for a trophy. A Patrol must have completed a minimum of 6 stations to qualify for the sled race. The race course will be laid out on Davitt Pond (or on land if the ice is not thick enough) and will long enough that it will take several minutes to complete. There will be no jumps or similar obstacles, but there be turns in the course. The race may be run in heats of approximately four to six sleds and the winner will be the sled with the fastest time. The winner will receive a trophy and second and third places will receive certificates. The rules for the race are as follows: Race order and heat assignments will be made by the judges. 2020 Yankee Doodle District Klondike Derby
1. The Webelos 2, Bear and Hawk divisions will be combined for the sled race. 2. In order to race, a Patrol must have passed the sled and clothing inspection and must have participated in at least six of the regular Derby events. 3.
