Visiting the Australian Music Vault Exhibition A guide to ratings and classifications The Australian Music Vault Exhibition is a celebration of the Australian contemporary music story – past, present and future. Created in collaboration with the music industry, it features a free, permanent exhibition, comprising of unique footage and iconic objects from Arts Centre Melbourne’s Australian Performing Arts Collection. Students can experience the best of Australian music up close; the pioneers of Australian rock and roll, the change makers who energised Australia through song and the wealth of creativity that has kept our music industry thriving. As music deals with real life issues, elements of the exhibition touch upon adult themes. This document is designed to help teachers navigate the exhibition with their students so that students can enjoy the immersive experience of the Australian Music Vault and engage in appropriate learning materials. Exhibited Items in showcases – Rated G The Australian Music Vault exhibition contains glass showcases displaying items that tell the story of Australian music. Each case has its own theme: 1. The Wild Ones: The innovators and pioneers of the Australian music industry 2. Two Way Traffic: The artists and music that travelled to and from Australian shores 3. Punk/New Wave: The rise of punk—from 1970s until 1985 4. The Real Thing: Exploring the Australian Voice. 5. Responsive Zone: This area will be used to respond quickly to current trends and concerns associated with the Australian music industry such as annual inductions to the ARIA Hall of Fame, anniversaries, deaths and topical issues. 6. The Amplifier - Rated G and M The Amplifier is located in the centre of the room. It is an immersive experience created by surround screens and sound. Entry is through a glass sliding door inside the black and red entry point shown below. Pictured: Entrance to The Amplifier is through a sliding glass door Countdown – Rated G Duration 4:11 A selection of clips from the long-running popular music show Countdown, including appearances from Crowded House, Cold Chisel, Renee Geyer and more. Sunbury Festival – Rated M (contains some nudity and drug use) Duration: 3:35 A visual snapshot of the legendary rock festival that began in 1972. Contains festival footage which includes nudity and drug use. Please note that the Amplifier videos are not played to a set schedule so it is advised for a teacher to check which video is playing before allowing students to enter. 4
Engagement zones (video screens) – Various Ratings There are various screens located around the AMV exhibition. These have been classified individually as the content of each screen differs. Pictured: Engagement Zone 5
1. The Wild Ones - Various Ratings G and M Located next to The Wild Ones section, this screen displays five separate videos that can be selected through one simple touch screen menu. Sound for these videos is accessed through headphones at the viewing station. Wendy Saddington M (contains strong language) Founding member of Australian band Chain talks about blues, gospel and soul singer Wendy Saddington Johnny O’Keefe G – Ross Wilson speaks about legendary rock and roll singer Johnny O’Keefe Molly Meldrum G – Interviews and footage of Molly Meldrum Bill Armstrong G – Interviews and footage of Melbourne’s pioneering music producer Bill Armstrong. Courtney Barnett and Jen Cloher G – Interviews with Courtney Barnett and Jen Cloher about their independent record label Milk! Records. Michael Gudinski G – Interview Michael Gudinski, founder of Mushroom Records and Mushroom Publishing. 2. Two Way Traffic – Rated G Located next to the Two Way Traffic section, this screen displays four separate videos that can be selected through one simple touch screen menu. Sound for these videos is accessed through headphones at the viewing station. The Seekers G - Australian music group The Seekers revisit their record breaking performance at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl in 1967. Australian Music to the World G – Interview with Australian songwriter Peter Allen about his international career. Countdown Summer Special G – Footage and interviews about successful Australian music show Countdown Colin Hay G – Interview with Men at Work’s front man Colin Hay. 6
3. Punk/ New Wave – Rated M Located next to the Punk/New Wave section, this screen displays three separate videos that can be selected through one simple touch screen menu. Sound for these videos is accessed through headphones at the viewing station. Big Risk M (contains adult themes, drug references) This short documentary contains footage of live punk music gigs. Contains smoking and drinking as well as dark song lyrics. Punkline M (contains adult themes) A short documentary about the punk venue Crystal Ballroom in St. Kilda. Featuring live footage from gigs. Contains graffiti painting, cigarette smoking and drinking. Punk Gunk M (contains mild language) Interviews with various Australian punk artists and patrons of the Punk Gunk events in the 70s and 80s. Mild language. 4. The Real Thing – Various Ratings – G and M Located on either side of The Real Thing section are two screens displaying four separate videos that can be selected through one simple touch screen menu. Sound for these videos is accessed through headphones at the viewing station. Missy Higgins G - Interview with Missy Higgins about her musical career Russell Morris G - Interview with Russell Morris about his rise to fame and creating his most recent album. Sunbury Festival Part 1 – The Birth M (contains nudity, drug references) Interviews with the founders of the 1970’s rock festival. Contains festival footage. Sunbury Festival Part 2 – The Legacy M (contains nudity, drug references) As above. 7

Responsive Zone - Rated G Located in the Responsive Zone, this screen currently displays highlights from ARIA Hall of Fame Inductee, Daryl Braithwaite. *Subject matter in this area will change regularly. Sound for this is played publicly through exhibit speakers. 6. Agents of Change – Various Rated – G, PG and M Located next to the Agents of Change exhibition, this screen displays eight separate videos that can be selected through one simple touch screen menu. Sound for these videos is accessed through headphones at the viewing station. Archie Roach PG – An interview with Archie Roach discussing his landmark song “Took the children away”. This song and interview is a personal account of Archie’s experience as a child of the stolen generation. SLAM Rally G – Documenting the movement to save Australia’s live music scene. Please note the main image for the SLAM (Save Live Australia’s Music) rally is an audio lead in the shape of a noose due to the slogan “Killing Live Music”. Peter Garrett G – Interview with Midnight Oil front man Peter Garrett regarding the 1980s nuclear disarmament campaign Stop the Drop Helen Reddy G – Celebrating Helen Reddy’s iconic song “I Am Woman” Blood Brothers: From Little Things Big G – Paul Kelly and Kev Carmody talk about the song Things Grow “From Little Things Big Things Grow.” Contains historical footage and live performances. Voice for Change: Ecca Vandal PG (mild drug references) Taken from the Mushroom Group’s community focused documentary series Voice for Change. Interviews, music and performances from local artist Ecca Vandal. Footage shows her speaking to young people in a community setting talking about how creativity offers an alternative to drug taking. Voice for Change: Urthboy M (contains adult themes) Taken from the Mushroom Group’s community focused documentary series Voice for Change. Interview with hip hop MC and producer Urthboy. Discussions of community issues and gang violence. Contains media footage of mild violence.
