Imagine you have no bed. You sleep on the sand. Mosquitoes and sandflies keep
biting. You have diarrhoea but there are no latrines. You’re thirsty, but the jerry can
is empty. There will be nothing to drink until you have walked across the desert to
the handpump five miles away. No water to wash with, or to drink. Your
breakfast is made from sorghum. You had the same yesterday, and the day before.
Then you wait for supper, the same again. You cannot read or write.
Your mother cried when the donkey died.
There was no veterinary care and there is no money to replace him.
What if you are ill? What then?
That is how we would live if we had been born in Darfur.
