Chilhowie Community Apple Festival P.O. Box 432 Chilhowie, VA 24319 chilhowieapplefestival.com chilhowieapplefestival@gmail.com To: All Participants and Visitors, Welcome to the 2021 Chilhowie Community Apple Festival. We are very excited to be able to have the festival this year after not being able to have it last year due to Covid restric- tions. Our theme for this year’s festival is “Flavors of Fall”. Everyone has something that they associate with Fall, whether it is the smell of falling leaves, a crisp fall morning, pumpkins and fodder shocks, a football game, or the beauty of the turning leaves on a mountain hillside. We hope that our festival helps rekindle the pleasant “flavors” of falls gone by and creates new “flavors” to savor in the future. We hope that you enjoy visiting our festival and our community. We look forward to seeing you again at the next Chilhowie Community Apple Festival. Sincerely, Rebecca Wilkinson-Smith Vicki Wilson Chilhowie Community Apple Festival Co-Presidents 4 | Chilhowie Apple Festival 2021

Chilhowie Community Apple Festival Beginnings History of the Festival The Chilhowie Community Apple Festival had its beginning on a dreary rainy night in March of 1953. A group of young men got together for the purpose of discussing the possibilities of im- proving our town. During the evening, they decided to organize the Chilhowie Junior Chamber of Commerce. This organization received its charter on April 21, 1953. During the spring of the same year, some of these members visited the Apple Blossom Festival in Winchester, Virginia. They returned to Chilhowie and suggested that they stage a festival and pay tribute to the apple, rather than the blossom. This would be most appropriate since Chihowie was the second largest apple producing center in Virginia for which Bonham Brothers and Duncan Orchards were the producers. Thus, plans and ideas developed fro the beginning of the Chilhowie Apple Festival. The first festival was held on October 2, 1953 on the grounds of the Old Chilhowie High School. Crowds, far larger than anticipated, attended that year’s events. It was estimated that 10,000 persons viewed the first parade! The Festival continued to grow beyond what one club could manage. Therefore, in 1965, other civic clubs joined in, and the name was changed to the Chilhowie Community Apple Festival. The aspirations of the new board were the same as the original board to strive to have a Festival for which the town and surrounding communities could be proud. In the 1980s, weather-related crop losses and the deaths of the leaders of the Bonham family combined to cause a decline in the once booming Bonson’s Apples business, dealing a blow to the apple industry in Chilhowie. The Duncan Orchard continued for several years more, but closed earlier this century. The event was, and has continued to be, family and community oriented with activities for ev- eryone. Over the years, various forms of entertainment have been a part of the Festival. They have included sky diving exhibitions; performances by professional square dancers, cloggers and musical entertainers; a Model T car comedy; motorcycle rider show; and pony and horse shows. Past events scheduled for participation by the public were: tractor driving contests, talent shows, square dances, baby shows, sock hops, street dances, Kids Day activities, and barbecued chicken suppers. Regular events, occurring dur- ing each Festival, are the beauty pageant, agricultural and crafts fair, pet show, parade, and high school band competition. The funds raised by the Apple Festival Committee are used to pay for worthwhile projects which benefit the community. The Festival has made monetary contributions to the Town, schools, and community. Contributions have been made to band directors for band trips and uniforms, to Proj- ect Graduation, to schools for the purchase of equipment, to Chilhowie Elementary for Williams- burg trips, to the Old High School Renovations Committee for many renovations, and to fire and rescue squads. The Festival shared the cost with the Town for the stage at the community Park and for the street Christmas lights. Prior to each year’s Festival, the committee purchases and dec- orates the Town with fall corn, gourds, pumpkins, mums, and flags. Santa Claus, Christmas treats, and community lighted Christmas trees were a Festival- sponsored tradition for over 20 years. As soon as one Festival ends, the committee begins planning for the next year. Chilhowie Apple Festival 2021 | 7

Covid Mitigation Protocols We are making the following modifications to this year’s festival in order to comply with Covid mitigation protocols: • All of our vendors will be spaced farther apart. • Vendors will have hand sanitizer available to customers and will periodically disinfect frequently touched items and surfaces. • All visitors to the exhibits in the Old High School are requested to wear a face covering. • Hand sanitizer and masks will be available in the Old High School • Train rides will only be in the first and third cars and all riders must ride with their own group. • Everyone is asked to observe social distancing, both indoors and outdoors. • There will be no baked goods category for the exhibits this year in either the children’s or adult divi- sions. • The children’s crafts will be for them to take home and make rather than make them on site. • There will be additional hand washing stations. • Picnic tables will be singularly spaced rather than under one tent. • There will not be any costume characters in the parade. • No items may be handed out during the parade to the spectators from the parade participants. • There will be no inflatables for the children. 10 | Chilhowie Apple Festival 2021

Apple Festival Parade Bands In 1953, a group of young men got together to discuss the possibilities of improving their town. It was from that gathering that the annual Chilhowie Community Apple Festival was born. Today, now 68 years later, this community festival lives on.. Berry Home Centers is proud to continue to be a part of this year’s Chilhowie Community Apple Festival tradition. As part of the 2018 festivities, Berry’s donated $5,000 by contributing $500 to each high school marching band that participated in the festival’s parade. They are following the same practice this year with one exception. Due to the price of fuel and the fact that many bands were unable to have fundraisers last year, the total contribution has been raised to $7500 with each band receiving $750. Please join us as we celebrate the town we call home and the 68th year of the Chilhowie Community Apple Festival. Band parade participation is coordinated by the Chilhowie High School Band Director and the Apple Festival Outside Chairperson Apple Festival Band Competition 1:00 pm Saturday September 25, 2021 The high school marching band competition is held each year as part of the festival. Many of the bands also march in the Grand Parade before competing with each other at the Chilhowie High School Stadium. This is the oldest continuous band festival in Virginia or Tennesee. This year marks the 68th year of the band festival. Admission to the band competition at the stadium is $5.00 per person. No passes of any kind are accepted since this is not a Virginia High School League event. The admission fee goes to the Chilhowie Band Boosters to help with the purchase of uniforms and other band related expenses.
