The Swiss ROUND 2 The boat building of the last decades has been dominated by fiber-reinforced plastic. The hand – Yngling layered process was often considered as the highest quality feature and thus was the pride of many boat- yards, however, environmental standards and industrial Quiz hygiene regulations no longer allow this production method in many countries as at today because the styrene emissions exceeded the permitted level many times over. Fortunately, there are alternative construction methods. Introduction by Walter Baumgartner: During the first The picture below shows how a Yngling hull was built half year regatta sailing in Switzerland – as in many at the Mader shipyard a few days ago. other countries – was not possible. To keep in touch with our members Jürg Wenger, Fleet Captain Lake Thun, created a quiz about sailing and boat building. Most of us have learned something new. Jürg introduced the first round as follows: “Regatta sailing is on hold. You still want to compete with other Yngling sailors? In that case our contest comes just in time. Test your knowledge and answer the questions. There will be a lucky draw amongst the senders with the correct answers to the questions and three senders will each receive a copy of the Yngling Magazine.“ Eligible are members of Suisse Yngling and friends Question: What is the name of this production method of the Yngling Class. The new hull is taking shape. At the turn of the millennium, starting from the year 2000, ISAF introduced standardized three-letter country codes. b. At the 1995 annual meeting of ISAF, it was decided to use three-digit country codes. After a transitional period of 4 years, from 31 March 1999, the three-digit code was obligatory when sails were re-measured. c. On November 10, 2000, the Yngling class was selected by the ISAF as the women’s Olympic keelboat class for the 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens. The Yngling class also had to adopt the three-digit country code that is mandatory for other Olympic boat classes. 13 The answers can be found on page 36.
3d printing r sp a r e p a r t s fo This spring, having replaced the standing rigging on my Yngling over the winter, I found myself having to acquire new spreader caps for a poorly documented fifty-year old boat (Figure 1). There seemed to be no chance of buying ‘genuine’ replacements, and I had resigned myself to either laboriously carving a plastic chopping board, or messily attempting to cast the old parts in epoxy resin, when I remembered that 3D printing has become widely available. 3D printing, as the name suggests, enables three-dimensional structures to be built up a layer at a time. The most Figure 2 common (and affordable) approach uses filaments of thermoplastic which are extruded hot from the print-head and harden on cooling. These now cost TinkerCad because it is reputable (belonging to the not much more than a normal inkjet printer, and there company Autodesk, Inc.) and since it runs in a web are also an ever-increasing number of commercial browser, it would work on my Macintosh and also has services which will print a design for you (uploaded as a reputation for simplicity, and is widely used (making a digital design file). it easy to find advice on-line). If, like me, you don’t Although I had little prior experience of using a CAD have much experience with CAD software then I program, it only took me an afternoon with the bits of would definitely recommend working through the the old spreader end cap, a Vernier calliper and the online tutorials to get used to the concepts and user TinkerCad® software to develop a shape that looked interface. Online services for printing will usually plausible (Figure 2). I chose the free online service accept a few different file formats — common options include .stl and .obj. If preparing a 3D file from general purpose software, be aware of the limitations of the Figure 1 3D printing. My biggest problem in developing the CAD model of my spreader end cap was not so much the use of the software, as the fact that my example end cap was broken and I wasn’t actually sure as to what it was for (e.g. should it grip the shrouds tightly, or should they be free to move through the end cap; I settled for a friction grip). I didn’t entirely trust my measurements, and I wasn’t sure what the dimensional tolerance on printing would be, so I had deliberately made my model slightly over size, in order to be able to sand the part to an exact fit. My lack of experience with CAD software and the limitations of TinkerCad meant that the model didn’t have chamfered edges so these would in any case have to be rounded off. As I had concerns about the ability of PLA to survive the summer temperatures and UV light here in Switzer- land, I chose to print my first parts in PETG (see Table 1) from a commercial online service and the parts duly arrived a few days later. It turned out to be quite a lot harder to sand PETG than wood, but after an hour or so of sanding I was pleased with the fit into the spreader. I then learnt the hard way that PETG (and 14
PLA) are somewhat brittle and broke the parts whilst trying to force the shroud through the clamping part into the groove foreseen for it within the end cap... In the meantime, I had learnt that a friend of mine had their own 3D printer (using PLA) and had quite some experience. They helped to make a slightly better CAD model (using FreeCad), and offered to also print the parts at slightly different sizes to save time with the fitting. It is possible to sand PLA or PETG by hand, but due to their low glass transition temperature (I.e. softening point) it is tricky to use an electric drill or abrasive tool such as a Dremel. If you have access to your own printer, a trial and error approach, adjusting the CAD model after each test fit is probably fastest. PLA and PETG come in a range of colours so I decid- ed to print the port and starboard endcaps in red and green, see Figure 3 and Figure 4. I had intended to wrap the endcaps in protective tape to protect the plastic from sunshine (and the sails from the end cap), but forgot to do this; after one season, the end caps still look OK. In summary, where not too much strength or flexibility is required, and no heat from friction will be generated, 3D printing using plastics can be used to economical- Figure 3 ly produce a variety of customised small parts around the boat e.g. hooks, shelves, cup-holders... For more If anybody is interested in reproducing such end money, professional services can also produce metal caps, I would be happy to supply a .stl file as a starting parts by 3D printing (e.g. using a laser to melt metal point. powder) and this capability, which has long been James Whitby used for prototyping, is now moving into mainstream Lake of Thun fleet, Switzerland manufacturing.
