Along with four other Midwest public media stations, they are leading a new regional news hub and increasing local, in-depth reporting that will benefit all communities. This past year, Nebraska Public Media trekked off the beaten path for Nebraska Rootes: Trees and Native Plants and took a breathtaking trip to see history, natural resources, and recreation in Exploring Nebraska’s State Parks. Backyard Farmer’s online-only companion series Digging Deeper dug into fresh gardening topics like nutrition, kids, and urban forestry. And, one year after devastating floods, Speaking of Nebraska interviewed residents of Winslow, Peru, and Dannebrog about the ongoing recovery. The Opportunity The Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) is a highly visible position as a member of the executive management team and advises on organizational policies, operations, and goals. They coordinate and oversee governance and administrative support of the Nebraska Public Media Foundation Board and committees. The CSO will design, implement, and coordinate fundraising planning and practices, including direct mail, on- air campaigns, grant submissions, individual giving, planned giving, business development, fundraising events, endowment fundraising, and donor communications. The CSO directly cultivates and solicits major gifts on behalf of the Nebraska Public Media Foundation, carrying a portfolio of approximately 50 high-level donors. The CSO manages a team of 35 professionals in business development, contract production, design, communications, education, annual giving, major/planned giving, grants and research. They prepare and monitor Nebraska Public Media Foundation’s annual revenue and expense budgets and perform general administrative duties, including budgeting, staff and facilities management, and staff evaluations, establishing clear, impactful metrics. This position serves as an employee of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and receives commensurate benefits, including: ❖ Several health insurance options, as well as life, disability, and long-term care insurance; ❖ Reimbursement accounts for healthcare and dependent daycare; ❖ Vacation and holiday leave, as well as other leave policies designed to help employees deal with personal or family events; ❖ A two-tiered 401(a) retirement plan, yielding 10% or 13.5% combined university and employee contributions after two years of service, plus other plan options; and ❖ Tuition remission options for employees, their spouses, and dependent children. The Candidate Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities ❖ Compliance with rules and regulations is a major responsibility of this position. This includes State Statutes, University, and State rules and regulations; CPB and PBS underwriting and fund-raising guidelines; Internal Revenue Service non-profit tax rules and regulations; grant restrictions; and broad contractual issues, including liability, copyright and various program and distribution rights. A broad knowledge of these areas is necessary to assure compliance while providing the maximum flexibility to staff to accomplish the role and mission. Knowledge of generally accepted accounting procedures; UNL accounting, purchasing and personnel procedures and policies is also essential. ❖ Budget preparation and oversight expertise; project and policy development expertise; production and supervisory expertise; oral and written communications proficiency; demonstrated marketing, fundraising and revenue generating skills; outstanding public relations and networking skills with public and private institutions. Problem Solving and Decision Making ❖ Manage all decisions relating to administration and oversight of fundraising through grant writing. ❖ Oversight over decisions directly related to a budget of approximately $25 million from federal, state, and non- profit sources and related to the attainment of annually set organizational revenue goals. ❖ Ability to make supervisory and personnel decisions necessary to motivate and manage a staff of approximately 12 employees. Interactions ❖ This position is highly visible internally and externally at a senior administrative level. Contact would be made with a wide variety of professionals for an equally wide variety of purposes. Most frequently, contact would involve: External: ❖ Professional and administrative peers in the public telecommunications and the private sector, including State and University officials, Federal government administrators, public relations and development administrators, non-profit board members, and representatives of UNL and private legal counsel; PBS, CPB, NPR, and other public telecommunication program officers and administrators; ❖ Representatives of funding sources, such as State agencies, Federal departments and foundations; ❖ Contractual clients and donors; Internal: ❖ The Nebraska Public Media leadership team, senior managers, and other staff as applicable. ❖ The Finance Department regarding budgetary reports and requirements. Background and Education ❖ At least five years of proven experience and strong leadership in positions of increasing responsibility in development or other relevant field required. ❖ Master’s degree is preferred. Knowledge of telecommunications, the public broadcasting system and its national and regional organizations is desirable. Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) certification is preferred.
