                     ADMIRAL WILLIAM H.
                     MCRAVEN, USN (RET.)
A retired four-star admiral with 37 years of service as a Navy SEAL, Admiral McRaven
most recently served as the ninth commander of U.S. Special Operations Command,
leading 69,000 men and women with an annual budget of over ten billion dollars.
The U.S. Special Operations Command is responsible for conducting counterterrorism
operations worldwide as well as building reliable military partners through programs
stressing the rule of law, universal rights, civil liberties, and military professionalism.
He is a recognized authority on U.S. foreign policy, and during his career served two
years on the National Security Council staff under President George W. Bush. As a
three- and four-star admiral, he was involved in national policy decisions during both
the Bush and Obama Administrations.

He is the author of Spec Ops (1995), based on his theory of why special operations
succeed against seemingly impossible odds. Spec Ops continues to be one of the
most widely read books on special operations in the military. His best-selling book,
Make Your Bed: Little Things That Can Change Your Life...and Maybe the World (2017),
reveals ten fundamental life lessons that Admiral McRaven learned in Navy Seal
training that helps readers overcome challenges in their lives and ultimately change
the world.

In 2012, McRaven was named one of the nation’s Top 10 Foreign Policy Experts by
Foreign Policy magazine and was later selected as one of the Top 100 Global Thinkers.
In 2014, Politico magazine named him one of the Politico 50, citing his leadership
as instrumental in cutting though Washington bureaucracy. Additionally, Fortune
magazine added McRaven to their list of the World’s 50 Greatest Leaders in 2015.
McRaven currently serves as a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and in
January 2015, he assumed the role as chancellor of the University of Texas System.
