MARCH 2019 Voice Don’t Let Spring Allergies Bring You Down More than 50 million Americans suffer from allergies every year. In particular, springtime allergies are an annual nuisance for many people. As plants begin to bloom and neighbors start to cut their grass more frequently, allergy sufferers nationwide start sniffling and sneezing. What’s more, mold growth blooms both indoors and outdoors, making it almost impossible to escape allergy triggers. Spring Allergy Alleviation Tips To reduce your allergies, be sure to take the following steps: • Wash your bedding every week in hot water to help keep pollen under control. • Wash your hair before going to bed, since pollen can accumulate in your hair. • Limit the number of throw rugs in your home to reduce dust and mold. • Wear an inexpensive painter’s mask and gloves when cleaning, vacuuming or painting to limit skin exposure and dust and chemical inhalation. • Vacuum twice a week. • Make sure the rugs you have are washable. • Change air conditioning and heating air filters often. Celebrate the Spring Equinox! The spring equinox (also called the March equinox or vernal equinox) falls on Wednesday, March 20, 2019. This event marks the astronomical first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. For the first time in nearly 40 years, the spring equinox will occur on the same day as March’s Full Worm Moon. The last time that these two events landed on the same date was March 20, 1981, though they did come close again in March 2000. But that’s not all: March’s full Moon will also be a Supermoon, meaning that it will be slightly larger and brighter than most of the other full Moons this year. Slayton KICK-OFF 2019! It was a chilly Friday afternoon at the Plaid Moose on Main Street of Slayton. The tables were all set up with water carafes and coffee. Also laid out on the tables were posters full of pictures for each trip we enjoyed in 2018. The signup table had gifts for everyone – new VIP pocket calendars, “on the go” hand sanitizers and VIP Post-it Notes. Every member got a colorful list of the events that we will be doing this year. We talked about each trip and answered the questions anyone had. Everyone was excited about this year’s upcoming events. Afterwards we enjoyed a warm brownie with ice cream, chocolate sauce and whipped cream - a great finish for the afternoon! Jacki Linder won the VIP gardening set, Charletta Bennett won the VIP rain gauge and Roy Carter the VIP travel mug. SpringValley & LeRoy On February 1st Spring Valley and LeRoy offices had their VIP Kick-offs. Carla hosted the LeRoy Kick-off with 16 members and Donna hosted the Spring Valley Kick-off with 30 in attendance. Both offices served cupcakes, a meat and cheese tray with crackers, with coffee or punch for beverages. It was a very nice day of visiting!
Fulda & Slayton February 14th was another cold, blustery day as VIP members from Fulda and Slayton met at the Pizza Ranch in Slayton for a Val- entine Lunch Buffet. While people waited for everyone to get there, we had some fun puzzles set out for whoever wanted to give them a try. After having our lunch and enjoying a few chocolate Kisses that were placed on the table, we divided into 2 groups and played the “Right/Left Game”. We had some wrapped boxes each containing a monetary prize – either a $5 bill, a $2 bill, a $1 bill or maybe just some quarters. We read a story and as the members listened they were to pass their box either to the left or right. Everyone had a blast as we sometimes got confused on which direction to go! It was a nice afternoon to visit and play a few games with friends. The door prize, a $10 gift card to the Pizza Ranch, was won by Arliss Hein. SpringValley & LeRoy On February 14th Spring Valley and LeRoy held their annual Valentine’s Day Lunch. There were 22 in attendance. We all enjoyed pizza, salads and dessert at the Pizza Place in Spring Valley. Garry TerMaat was the winner of the valentine filled with chocolates and Beverly Plaehn was the winner of the bouquet of flowers. A good time was had by all and our bellies were full when we left!
