The true cost of Tottenham missing out on Champions League qualification.
This was the weekend in which Tottenham Hotspur's hopes of reaching the Champions League were downgraded from unlikely to near
impossible. Sunday afternoon's defeat to Manchester United, in addition to Chelsea, West Ham United and Liverpool winning, has turned the hill
into a mountain.
To finish in the top four from here, Jose Mourinho's team are not just reliant on fixing their own myriad issues immediately but on the teams above
them to enter crises of their own. According to the 538 prediction model, they now have a 6% chance of qualifying for the Champions League with
seven games remaining.
By Monday night they could be in eighth place if Everton do the business against Brighton - perhaps putting their place in any European
competition next season in jeopardy (although the Carabao Cup final still offers a route to the Europa League).
So what will the financial hit be should the north London club fall short of the primary objective for all the big teams?
Prize money.
Going off last season’s figures, simply reaching the group stage is worth £13.2m - with bonus payments for every positive result (£2.33m per win;
£780,000 for a draw).
The further a team progresses the more the bank balance grows. Reaching the round of 16 leads to £8m extra, the winner ends up with £16.4m
more.
To put it all in Spurs context their run to the Champions League final two years ago was worth £90m in prize money, reaching the round of 16 last
year was worth about £60m.
That is a big drop off but nothing compared to being in the Europa League or missing out completely.
By comparison they will have made a little more than £10m from this season's Europa League campaign, which ended in embarrassing fashion
against Dinamo Zagreb last month.
Finishing fourth in the Premier League is also worth about £2m more than finishing fifth, going off last season’s merit payments. Eighth, where Spurs
could find themselves at 10pm this evening, is worth £7m less.
Then there is the coefficient payment, a category where the biggest clubs are rewarded most. It is explained in convoluted detail by UEFA here but
based on this current season Real Madrid will have received £30.6m from the former category this season while Spurs in the Europa League will
have earned just £2.8m.

The market broadcasting pool for the Champions League is worth £252m this season and split proportionally between leagues and then last
season’s finishing position (the Premier League works on a sliding scale where the champions get 40%, second place 30%).
The season Spurs reached the final, they earned about £14m having finished third the campaign previous. Liverpool’s share was closer to £11m.
By contrast, the pool for the Europa League is £145m with the cup winners given 30% and those qualifying via the league getting 17.5%.
Commercial and merchandising.
Sponsors want to be associated with the best, brands want their logos in front of the most eyes and in terms of visibility the Champions League is
incomparable.
But there is also the potential of current agreements being impacted. Manchester United's contract with adidas, for instance, has a clause in which
failure to qualify for the Champions League in consecutive seasons means a 30% reduction to their £75m per season agreement.
It is unclear if Spurs' £30m per year deal with Nike, which runs to 2033, features performance-related bonuses but such agreements are common
across the game.
While exact figures are hard to come by significant sums can be made from additional merchandise sales - both from special branded kits and
packed shops at the stadium on home matchdays.

Matchday.
The new stadium will be a big generator of income for Spurs once fans are allowed back in and figures from the pre-pandemic portion of last
season showed they made an average of £5.8m per league game in ticket sales and catering.
An even larger figure would come from each Champions League game but keep in mind that they are unlikely to attract 62,000 fans to a Europa
League tie against one of the continent’s lesser names.
How many Premier League teams can play in the Champions League?
The 2019 Champions League final will be an all-Premier League affair with Liverpool and Tottenham set to face off in Madrid, while two English
teams could also potentially meet in the final of the Europa League, with Arsenal and Chelsea in opposite semi-finals of UEFA's second-tier
tournament.
It has been a great year for English football, following on from the Three Lions' run to the semi-finals of the World Cup in Russia, and we could
now see more Premier League clubs in the 2019-20 edition of the Champions League as a result.
Ordinarily, the top four teams in the Premier League progress to the group stage of Europe's premier club competition, but places are also
reserved for the winners of the Champions League and the Europa League.

City? What's next for Saliba as Arsenal close in on £50m White?
So, does that mean we could potentially see six Premier League clubs competing in the Champions League next season?
No, unfortunately not.
The reason is UEFA dictates that, while there is a minimum of four Premier League clubs each season, a maximum of five clubs from any one
country can compete in the Champions League.
There are a number of different scenarios that could transpire if an English club wins the Champions League or the Europa League or, indeed,
both.
What happens if a Premier League club wins the Champions League?
If a Premier League club wins the Champions League and has not already qualified for the tournament through their league position, they assume
their place in the group stage as England's fifth representative.
However, things are a little bit different if a Premier League club wins the Champions League and also earns a place in the competition via their
league finish .
Instead of going to the highest team in the Premier League that has not earned qualification for the Champions League, the extra spot is transferred
to the champion of the league ranked 11th on UEFA's coefficients table .
For the 2019-20 season that will be the Eredivisie in the Netherlands.
What happens if a Premier League club wins the Europa League?
In the event that a Premier League club wins the Europa League and doesn't qualify for the Champions League through their domestic league , they
take their place in the Champions League group stage as the fifth and final team from England.
If they finish in the top four of the Premier League, thus qualifying for the Champions League, and then win the Europa League, the Champions
League group stage position goes to the team that finishes third in the league ranked fifth in UEFA's coefficients table.
For 2019-20 that team will be drawn from France's Ligue 1.
What happens if Premier League clubs wins both?
If the winners of both the Champions League and the Europa League hail from the Premier League and neither team finished in the top four , the
team that finished fourth is penalised.
In such a case, in order to adhere to UEFA's limit of five teams in the Champions League, the team that finishes fourth in the Premier League is
demoted to the Europa League group stage.
A similar scenario occurred during the 2011-12 season when Chelsea won the Champions League but finished sixth in the Premier League.
At the time, UEFA had imposed a limit of four teams per country and the fourth-placed team - Tottenham - suffered as a result by dropping into
the Europa League.

Ok, we're moving closer to the draw as UEFA Deputy General Secretary Giorgio Marchetti talks us through the draw process. He welcomes the

The countdown to the draw is on . It'll be a long ride this evening folks with draw fans possibly frustrated with the series of UEFA awards. We'll

New season Champions League season means new Champions League matchball. Earlier today, UEFA & Adidas unveiled the ball that will be
used in the group stage:
Istanbul's Attaturk Stadium will host the 2020/21 Champions League final with the venue being ruled out of holding last season's final as intended
due to the Covid-a9 pandemic. The final will be staged at the 79,000 capacity venue on Saturday 29 May (2021).
The Juventus graphics department have been busy today creating this 'Connect 4' style feature ahead of the draw.
Empty stadiums have been something we've all had to get used to since football made a comeback after grinding to a halt throughout the world
(apart from Belarus) in March. UEFA have confirmed that all group stage games for both the Champions and Europa League will be staged
behind closed doors and a massive fingers crossed the situation relating to the pandemic is so that we can get fans back in stadiums come 2021.
We took a look earlier at the possible worst case scenarios for some clubs. Premier League champions Liverpool could find themselves drawn
against Barcelona or Atlético Madrid , who beat them in the quarter-finals of last season’s competition. Reigning champions Bayern Munich are in
pot 1 and could once again find themselves facing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, their 1999 Champions League final nightmare, of Manchester United in
pot 2.
A couple of pointers to mention regarding rules ahead of the draw: at this stage of the competition, no sides from the same league can be paired in
the same group and for political reasons no side from Russia and Ukraine can be paired in the same group.
Tonight's draw will be interspersed with UEFA handing out a series of awards as mentioned earlier. If I recall correctly from the 19/20 group stage
draw, these awards will be handed out during the course of the draw and I'd anticipate the ceremony to last anywhere between 60/90 minutes.
UEFA really have pulled their socks up in terms of snappy, dynamic draw procedures in recent years.
UEFA will confirm exact kick-off time for each game at some point on Friday after liaising with rights holders regarding broadcast dates.
When will these group stage games be played I hear you ask.

Rebel Super League clubs won’t accept UEFA ‘coercion’

MADRID (AP) — Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus strongly criticized UEFA on Wednesday for opening disciplinary cases against them
over their roles in trying to launch a European Super League, saying they won’t accept being pressured by the European soccer body.
The three clubs also defended their attempt to remake European soccer, saying the sport is headed for an “inevitable downfall” unless there are
major reforms.
The three clubs are the remaining holdouts among 12 founders of the failed Super League and have refused to renounce the project. They released
a statement on Tuesday, a day after UEFA said it had opened proceedings against them for “a potential violation of UEFA’s legal framework.”
Its statutes include a section on “prohibited groupings” of clubs or leagues forming without UEFA’s permission or outside its control. The
proceedings could lead to the clubs being banned from the Champions League.
“Barcelona, Juventus and Real Madrid, all of them more than a century old, will not accept any form of coercion or intolerable pressure, while they
remain strong in their willingness to debate, respectfully and through dialogue, the urgent solutions that football currently needs,” the clubs said.
“Instead of exploring ways of modernizing football through open dialogue, UEFA expects us to withdraw the ongoing court proceedings that
question their monopoly over European football,” they said. “Either we reform football or we will have to watch its inevitable downfall.”
The three clubs expressed their “absolute rejection of the insistent coercion that UEFA has been maintaining towards three of the most relevant
institutions in the history of football.”
“This alarming attitude constitutes a flagrant breach of the decision of the courts of justice, which have already made a clear statement warning
UEFA to refrain from taking any action that could penalize the founding clubs of the Super League while the legal proceedings are ongoing,” the
three clubs said.
A court in Madrid last month issued a preliminary ruling stopping UEFA, FIFA and its members from acting against the creation of the new league,
which folded anyway because of widespread criticism from fans, domestic leagues and other clubs. A judge has asked the European Court of
Justice in Luxembourg to consider if restrictions on the rebel clubs are breaking European Union laws.
The holdout clubs said the opening of disciplinary proceedings by UEFA is “incomprehensible and is a direct attack against the rule of law that we,
the citizens of the European Union, have democratically built up, while constituting a lack of respect toward the authority of the courts of justice
themselves.”
UEFA gave no timetable for the expected disciplinary cases against the clubs, which have all qualified for the Champions League next season.
Any bans for the clubs would likely lead to appeals at the Court of Arbitration for Sport and pressure to resolve the cases before next season’s
European competitions. The Champions League group-stage draw is on Aug. 26 and matches start on Sept. 14.
The Super League project was publicly launched late at night on April 18 then imploded within 48 hours amid the backlash and threats of
legislation by the British government.
The nine clubs who settled with UEFA are: AC Milan, Inter Milan, Atlético Madrid, Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United, and Tottenham, plus
Champions League finalists Chelsea and Manchester City.
Those clubs agreed to UEFA’s terms to forfeit 5% of their prize money from European competitions in the 2022-23 season and pay a combined
15 million euros ($18.4 million) as a “gesture of goodwill” to benefit children, youth and grassroots football.
The holdout clubs said the Super League was “promoted with the aim of improving the situation of European football, through permanent dialogue
with UEFA and with the objective to increase the interest in the sport and to offer fans the best possible show.”
They said “this objective has to be achieved in a framework of sustainability and solidarity, especially in a precarious economic situation such as the
one many clubs in Europe are currently experiencing.”
