Setsubun (節分) is the day before the beginning of spring in the old calendar in Japan. The name
literally means 'Seasonal Division', this year
             celebrated on 2nd of February.
To celebrate Setsubun, roasted soybeans (known
as fortune beans) are thrown out of the front door
while shouting “Devils out! Fortune in!” before
slamming the door. The beans are thought to
symbolically purify the home by driving away the evil
spirits that bring misfortune and bad health with
them. Then, as part of bringing luck in, it is
customary to eat the roasted soybeans; one for
each year of one’s life, plus one more for bringing
good luck in the coming year.
Students did not throw them out the
classroom door, but ate them according
        to their age plus one!
The other practice done on Setsubun is
to eat ehoumaki – lucky direction sushi
roll; eaten in silence whilst facing the
    year’s lucky compass direction as
determined by the zodiac symbol of the
year. This year was south, south east.
We were very lucky to have Mrs Marti
firstly bringing in the roasted soybeans
for us to defeat the demons, and show
us how to make a delicious ehoumaki;
and then eat in silence facing south,
south east while making many wishes.

Chris’ Spot on Health
Welcome back to all our returning students and a warm welcome to all our new students

commencing this year. I do hope everyone had a restful, relaxing and enjoyable break.

To all new students, and parents and carers of new students I would like to introduce

myself. My name is Christina Silva and I am the School Based Youth Health Nurse at

Atherton High. My role here is to promote health and wellbeing and to create a supportive

and healthy school environment for students and staff alike.

Students and parents are welcome to see me in my office which is located on the verandah

of A block next door to the Guidance Officer’s room. I have an open door policy so no

appointment is required. I can provide information and guidance on many topics

surrounding a young person’s emotional, social and physical wellbeing. These include:

healthy eating and physical activity, feeling unhappy or stressed, relationships, personal

and family problems, sexual health, puberty changes, and smoking, alcohol and other drugs.

My role also includes conducting education sessions and workshops for students, working

with local community services and linking young people to these services, writing articles

for the school newsletter covering an array of health and wellbeing topics, and conducting

health promotion activities within the school environment.

I thought it might also be helpful to address what I don’t do as a Youth Health Nurse. I do

not administer first aid, injections or medications. I do not conduct physical examinations

or provide ongoing counselling. My role is to refer onto the most

appropriate health or educational professional and/or service when

                             required.

If you have any further queries or questions about my role or any

concerns about your young person, please feel free to contact me.

My usual days are every Tuesday and Thursday and every second

Friday (fortnightly from Friday 19th February).

Once again welcome to Atherton High and I look forward meeting

many of you throughout the year.

A parent can opt in or out of the scheme by completing another Participation Agreement Form. Participation

as possible and before 12/2/2021.
