Please look out for emails from Communications with information and menus for these Pop-ups. It has been so great to see many of you enjoying the Club with your families again. I have missed the “hustle and bustle” of how things used to be, and it is heart-warming to see how much you all have clearly missed it as well. Thank you for being so diligent in following all of the protocols in place so we can begin to safely enjoy the Club again. With the closure of Mr. D’s, Roger’s Roadhouse Street Cart will continue lunch service at the Garden Terrace and Lawn on Thursdays through Mondays with an enhanced menu on Sundays and the food trailer, Roadside Cravings is serving lunch Tuesday through Saturday in its new location, the parking lot of the Country Club by Tavern on the Court. A Season to Plan and Play By Chuck Rosenblatt, Golf Committee Chair W H AT A N HONOR IT IS TO H AV E BEEN SELEC TED as the Golf Committee Chair. I’ve served on the ON THE COURSES committee the past four years and have learned so much about our golf community. I am excited to welcome Bill Berkowitz to the committee as my Vice Chair. It is hoped our new committee will be able to accomplish as many improvements as the committee did under our past chair Steve Foreman. Of course it goes without saying that our professional golf staff is under the outstanding leadership of Brad “JR” Friend as the Director of Golf Operations and Wes Dinsmoor as Director of Golf Course Maintenance and Landscaping. 12 | M AY 2 0 21
| GOLF In the coming months I hope to present the various initiatives the Golf Committee is taking. Many of the initiatives will be a continuation of previous Golf Committees as well as new ones. To name a few: • Course Care — Of course this has to be the NUMBER ONE priority of the Golf Committee. Our membership has shown the willingness to buy into Course Care when we requested all golf carts obey the 90 degree rule. Not ALL but the majority of our membership followed this. You can already see the difference this makes. Now we need our member to continue course care by filling divots with sand, raking traps, and repair pitch marks on the greens. • Tournaments — This past season the Golf Committee introduced the concept of a Championship week. It was very successful with over 100 members taking part, more than we have experienced TOURNAMENTS & EVENTS for many years. We intend to grow this in the years to come. All social events are open to all equity • Driving Range — With the renovation of Mr. D’s this summer and the addition of a few hitting members. Equity golf members have bays at Mr. D’s we will be introducing some “Top Golf” type of technology and lighting to part of top priority. the range. We will also be introducing new Radar Technology on the South Side of the Range. All competitive events are open to equity Look for new and innovative games and activities on the Driving range in the new season. golf members only. Certain events are • Play for Pink — As most of you know by now we had a very successful week of raising $75,000. It limited to a maximum number of is our plan to build on this success next season. participants. When oversubscribed a • Social Tournaments — This past year we had social tournaments just about every other week in blind draw will be used to select entries. the summer. Some of those tournaments proved to be really fun and we will be introducing them All requests must be submitted via the again this summer for everyone to enjoy. Club’s website. • Group Leaders Meetings — This season we will invite all golfers to what has become a very ••• successful series of meetings. We try to explain what initiatives and topics are important to the Golf UPCOMING SUMMER Committee and answer questions too. TOURNAMENTS & EVENTS • Teaching Staff — Boca West has an outstanding teaching staff under the leadership of Pam Elders. We hope to offer more clinics and encouragement for members to take golf lessons to Memorial Day Tournament improve their golf game. Sunday, May 30 FINALLY the biggest initiative the Golf Committee hopes to achieve this next season is a return to Pick your own foursome pre-Covid days. Shotgun starts on tournaments and some sort of socializing after playing golf. Tee time or shotgun TBD I hope that the Golf section of the Boca West magazine will be informative, so I couldn’t think of a more Entry deadline: Sunday, May 16 important question to begin off with. “WHY AM I GETTING LATE TEE TIMES?” For an answer on that I went directly to our Director of Golf Operations, JR for his explanation: Independence Day Tee times have been a part of many lunch or dinner conversations over the past few months. As with Tournament many other clubs in our area, member rounds are up 15% for the first five months of our membership Saturday, July 3 year. 15% equates to 15 (60 players) additional member groups per day. That is great news but that Pick your own foursome does not make getting a “prime time” tee time any easier. We remain with nine minutes intervals Tee time or shotgun TBD between tee times to insure fleet carts are available for all those that need them and to insure we are doing our part in keeping everyone safe. With single rider golf carts, pace of play is faster and shortens Entry deadline: Saturday, June 22 the length of our double tee to insure a smooth pace of play. These factors result in 4-6 less prime tee times per day on each course resulting in 16 to 24 tee times no longer available during “prime time.” Labor Day Tournament These factors cause tee times to be more difficult and certainly will not help when members are Sunday, September 5 entertaining family guests. Pick your own foursome Once we get back to normalcy and we are riding two players in a cart and are able to get back to our Tee time or shotgun TBD normal tee time intervals, tee time history’s will improve but remember the system works by using Entry deadline: Sunday, August 22 your group(s) combined history for the last 14 days and upcoming six days of tee times when processing requests for each day of play. When your group is moved from the waiting list or your time is changed, the system replaces your historical tee time with the new tee time. In other words, when your tee time improves so does your history. To help with your tee times, please consider: • changing your earliest time available to allow for more tee time possibilities • link less groups together to allow the tee time system to have more flexibility • do not restrict your group(s) to exclude a course from your selection effectively reducing available tee times by 25% Stay safe and enjoy your golf! HEALTH EFFECTS OF REGULAR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY presented by Dr. Steven F. Lewis Wednesday, May 19 / Request by: Sunday, May 16 The increase in life expectancy of U.S. adults over the past several decades recently has leveled off due to increases in heart and blood vessel diseases related to the emergent pandemics of overweight, obesity and type 2 diabetes. Regular physical activity can be an effective countermeasure for these diseases but only 1 in 5 Americans are sufficiently physically active. This session will focus on the importance of regular physical activity as a potential “magic bullet” for increasing both the quality and quantity of life. Included will be the health effects of physical activity performable by everyone, including the oldest old and also more strenuous exercise for those keen to improve their physical fitness and appearance.
