A WORD FROM THE MASTER Welcome to Cart Marking! It is with great pleasure that I welcome The Rt Hon The Lord Mayor Alderman Peter Estlin, The Lady Mayoress Lindy Estlin, Sheriff Vincent Keaveney and Mrs Amanda Keaveney and Sheriff Liz Green and Mr Peter Green. I also welcome some of my fellow Livery Masters, their partners, Livery Clerks, our Liverymen, Freemen and Apprentices and all other guests and visitors to Cart Marking this year. I’ve been looking forward to saying that for nine years, ever since I first had involvement with the event in 2010 when, in my first year as a Court Assistant, the then Cart Marking Chairman, Commander Bawtree, press ganged me naval style into helping out. The following year he gave me the news that I would be taking over from him as Chairman of the Cart Marking panel and the rest is history. Talk about being keelhauled! My four years in that role and the seven years involvement in total have given me insights into all aspects of the event so when I thank the Cart Marking panel for everything they’ve done this year, I really mean it! In spite of yet more bureaucratic and financial hurdles put in their way, they’ll deliver another spectacular show. Well done Assistant Richard Buswell and the panel. This pageant would not exist if it wasn’t for the enthusiastic vehicle owners and drivers to whom we owe our thanks and appreciation. The increasing scope of congestion charging, Low Emission Zones and Ultra Low Emission Zones make their generous input into this event more challenging each year. In my nine months as Master, Cart Marking must be the event most raised in discussions with other Masters. That said, even recently, when I explain its history, what we do and why we continue the tradition today, many are still unaware or have little idea what it’s all about. However, Guildhall Yard is only so big and can only take so much weight so perhaps our little secret is best kept that way? So perhaps it’s NOT Good to Talk? Enjoy your day with the Carmen and tell everyone about it - yes, It’s Good To Talk!
