TARGET AUDIENCE This course is intended for advanced practice psychologists, physicians, advanced practice nurses, and other healthcare providers treating patients with sleep disorders. This course is suitable for providers who have extensive experience in behavioral sleep practice or have already completed a beginner/intermediate level course on behavioral treatment for insomnia. OVERVIEW This advanced course will examine state-of-the-art assessment and treatment strategies in behavioral sleep medicine through didactic lectures, case presentations and group discussions. The course is structured around four content areas: 1) Complex insomnia cases in older adults 3) Hypersomnia 2) Insomnia and pain 4) Special topics in pediatric insomnia. At this course, attendees will learn from experts how to apply innovative behavioral sleep treatment for a variety of patients with complex presentations. OBJECTIVES - Day 1 Upon completion of day 1, participants should be able to: Discuss the clinical presentation of hypersomnia. Integrate mindfulness into clinical practice as an effective treatment strategy. Compare and contrast mindfulness practices with CBT. Describe at least one strategy for coping with chronic hypersomnia. Evaluate non-pharmacological treatments for hypersomnia disorders. Identify novel treatment strategies for circadian rhythm sleep disorders in adults Provide an overview of the sleep-pain relationship and discuss the promise of integrating CBT-I into the treatment of chronic pain. Discuss assessment issues when evaluating patients with chronic pain and insomnia. Review Existing Studies of Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) in Chronic Pain. Discuss issues related to Tailoring CBT-I for Pain. Describe common causes of insomnia in adult aging Tailor behavioral treatments for insomnia in patients with co-morbidities Identify the most common sleep disturbances present in school-aged children and adolescents. Apply behavioral and cognitive behavioral strategies to the treatment of bedtime anxiety and insomnia in middle childhood and adolescence. List three common challenges and solutions in behavioral sleep treatment for young children OBJECTIVES - Day 2 Upon completion of day 2, participants should be able to: Employ effective techniques to address non-adherence to PAP therapy. Discuss the nature of adherence to continuous positive airway pressure. Consider the possible mechanisms and treatment for residual sleepiness in highly adherent patients. Describe adaptations for the use of CBT-I in adolescents with circadian rhythm disorders. Identify the impact of clinically significant hypersomnia on pediatric patients’ daily lives. List special considerations for behavioral sleep treatment in children. Learn non-pharmacologic management strategies for pediatric patients with hypersomnia.
SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION REQUIREMENTS Successful completion by participants - Learners must complete the activity post-test and online evaluation. Each day you will receive information on how to access the online web connection to complete the evaluation and obtain the certificate for that day. Online evaluation - An electronic conference evaluation is available on line following the completion of the day. Certificate - Will be available to you online upon completion of the post-test and online evaluation.
