“ It was 1881 when I heard a bit of gossip as to the lack of flour in Aspen. We packed
our mules and three horses with eight-hundred pounds of flour in addition to our
personal possessions. It was difficult footing on the steep grade through deep snow. Photos from the DeBeque Family

We were within 200 feet of the top. One of the mules fell down. Owing to the
hazardous position on the edge of a precipice, there was nothing could be done but
cut the harness. The poor beast slipped over the edge into a bank of snow half a mile
below and was buried. We stood aghast at the sight.

The journey on, up, and over the range was a most difficult undertaking. The descent
on the western slope was not easy. A sorry sight we made, trudging into Aspen, men
and beasts heavily laden with flour!”
