Due to the current social distancing restrictions in place in light of COVID-19, the CSCP has worked with our experienced trainers to ensure that safeguarding training can still be made available to multi-agency partners. Although, there will be some changes for all delegates to note prior to booking: Delegates need to apply to join the course: https://cscp.org.uk/training/calendar-of-events/ All sessions will be held virtually – please make sure you can access Microsoft Teams or Zoom (these will be the preferred platforms for safeguarding training) Some session will require you to review a handout pack which will be sent to you in advance with instructions Be aware that no online platform is completely secure, so keep questions general, and avoid giving any information that could be used to identify a child or family Always keep your speaker on mute if you’re not speaking to reduce background noise Please do not use any other devices while you’re taking part in the conference Please take note of the allocated break and lunch times set during the training and behave as if you were in a ‘real’ training room Failure of any of the above will result in the delegate not receiving their certificate of accreditation.
Understanding Early Help in Camden: Date: 14th September 2021 Trainer: Becca Dove, Head of Location: Virtually – Microsoft Family Support and Complex Teams Time: 10:30 – 12:30 Families Course description: This event is for all practitioners who need to understand how Camden’s early help system works, when it would be appropriate and how they can explain this to service users and other professionals. Please note that you will need to have downloaded Microsoft Teams for the virtual session. The CSCP will share the link to the Microsoft Teams video call and materials required for the session with delegates at least 2 days before the course. Course objectives: Delegates will be able to: • Explain Camden early help to a child, family or other professional • Explain what happens when someone is worried and rings the Camden Children and Families Contact Service • Understand where early help sits on the threshold of need and its difference to safeguarding • Increased knowledge of the range of early help services available in Camden • Reflect on what you can do to help a Camden family who might benefit from early help Target Audience: This event is suitable for professionals in all Working Together Groups.
Designated Safeguarding Lead Refresher (Education staff only): Please note that only one representative per setting can attend this training session Date: 15th September 2021 Trainer: Mike Smith, Location: Virtual – MS Teams Time: 09:30 – 13:00 Independent Safeguarding and Child Protection Training Consultant Course description: This event is designed to offer designated safeguarding leads training to meet their statutory requirements for two yearly training suitable for their role. Course objectives: By the end of the course you will have: • Refreshed your understanding of the Designated Safeguarding Lead’s role and responsibilities • Updated your knowledge of key and emerging themes in safeguarding children • Considered the key messages for education professionals from recent analyses of child safeguarding practice reviews, and • Identified what constitutes an effective safeguarding culture in education settings. The training is highly participative, and you are encouraged to bring questions and examples from your own professional practice. It will be informed throughout by relevant law, guidance, procedures, theory, child safeguarding practice reviews (formerly serious case reviews) and current research, and will be supported by a comprehensive handout pack. Target Audience: School staff who are Designated Safeguarding Leads. Please note that only one representative per setting can attend this training session.
Key milestones in adolescent years & the impact of abuse: Date: 16th September Trainer: Rahana Hussain, Location: Virtual – MS Teams Time: 09:30 – 14:30 Independent Safeguarding and Child Protection Training Consultant Course Description: This one day event is for multi-agency professionals who work with adolescents and who need to explore the issues around adolescent development, with special reference to the impact of abuse at this stage and the mental wellbeing of teenagers. Course objectives: • Explore key developmental milestones in adolescence • Consider strategies for working with families where there are developmental and/or abuse issues • Develop knowledge about the impact of abuse on children during their adolescent years Target Audience: This event is suitable for professionals in Groups 2 and 3 and others for refresher and meets the requirements of Level 3 of the Intercollegiate Document. Date: 23rd September 2021 Trainer: Helen Elliott, Location: Virtually – Microsoft Time: 09:30 – 13:00 Independent Safeguarding Teams and Child Protection Training Consultant Course description: This one-day event is for those who work regularly with children and young people, and/or with adults who are parents or carers, and who may be asked to contribute to assessments of children in need of protection and/or in need of services. Course objectives: Delegates will have: • Developed their knowledge, skills and the ability to work together on the processes for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, including those suffering or at risk of suffering significant harm • Received an opportunity to meet with colleagues from different agencies to learn together and explore professional dilemmas • Explored strategies to support children, young people and their families through effective multi-agency working together Target Audience: This event is suitable for professionals in Working Together Groups 2-3 and meets the requirements of Level 3 of the Intercollegiate Document.
Young person substance misuse and FWD referrals: Date: 29th September 2021 Trainer: FWD Substance Misuse Location: Virtual – MS Teams Time: 10:00 – 12:00 Service Course Objectives: To increase awareness of drugs issues affecting young people. To explore the trending substance misuse amongst young people in Camden. To increase knowledge of the physical and mental risk associated with the trending substances. A better understanding of hidden harms associated with substance misuse. To raise awareness around signs of withdrawals. To increase knowledge and confidence to make an appropriate referral. Building Effective Relationships with Families (Webinar): Date: 30th September 2021 Trainer: Mike Smith, Independent Location: Virtually – Zoom Time: 09:30 – 16:00 Safeguarding and Child Protection Training Consultant Course aim: Many families have some concerns and reservations, at least initially, to being worked with by children’s professionals. Parents who are worked with in a safeguarding process will often have histories that include disadvantage and discrimination, and may experience professional contact as a further sign that they have ‘failed’ in their parenting. The aim of this one-day programme is to support you in developing your skills in building effective relationships with parents and offer some practical techniques to improve the likelihood of engaging constructively with them. Course objectives: By the end of the programme you will have: • Developed your awareness of the signs a parent may need greater effort to build a positive relationship with, and some of the possible reasons why this might be needed • Looked at the key role professionals have in building positive collaborative relationships with families, while understanding the appropriate use of professional authority when there are child protection concerns • Considered signs that can indicate a parent’s degree of commitment to, and confidence in, making changes • Been introduced to frameworks for making sense of the change process, and • Identified actions that professionals can take to motivate, support and encourage parents to engage with plans to safeguard and promote their children’s welfare. Safeguarding against radicalisation (WRAP) training: Date: 5th October 2021 Trainer: Jane Murphy, Prevent Location: Virtually – Microsoft Education Officer Teams Time: 10:00 – 12:00 Course description: This training explains Prevent (the Government's counter-terrorism strategy), the radicalisation process, how to identify at-risk people, how to raise concerns and appropriate safeguarding responses. WRAP training is aimed at increasing your understanding, knowledge, and awareness in issues relating to radicalisation and extremism while helping professionals counter extremist narratives. Course objectives: Participants will gain: • An understanding of understand what radicalisation means and why people may be vulnerable to being drawn into terrorism as a consequence of it. • An awareness of what we mean by the term “extremism” and the relationship between extremism and terrorism • The ability to use existing expertise and professional judgment to recognise potential vulnerable individuals and know when an intervention may be necessary to support them • Knowledge of how to obtain support for people who may be being exploited by radicalising influences Target Audience: Anyone working with individuals that are vulnerable to radicalisation including: Youth workers, Social workers, Teachers, Early Years. This event is suitable for professionals in all Working Together Groups and meets the requirements of Level 3 of the Intercollegiate Document.
Effective safeguarding supervision: Date: 14th & 15th October 2021 Trainer: IN-TRAC Location: Face-to-face Time: 09:30 – 16:30 Course description: Delegates must attend both sessions in order to be accredited. This two day programme focuses on the role of supervision in promoting effective safeguarding practice. It is not specific to any one organisation, is intended to be delivered to a multi-agency audience and explores the elements of supervision that are intrinsic to keeping children safe from harm across all professions. The course will explore working with uncertainty, the factors that affect decision making, the role of emotional resilience, as well as lessons from serious case reviews. Course objectives: Participants will have had the opportunity to: understand what constitutes effective safeguarding supervision and its relationship to safe practice and positive outcomes for children understand the role that the supervisor can play within the safeguarding system and at the interface with other organisations. consider lessons from practice, including serious case reviews, and the implication for supervision practice consider how emotions may impact on staff and decision making in child protection understand how best to help staff evaluate and analyse information and use this analysis to inform decision making in situations where there are concerns about the safety of a child use the supervision cycle, and understand how it can be used as a model to facilitate effective supervision in both formal and informal situations Target Audience: Multi-Agency professionals who have a responsibility for supervising.
Recognising and Responding to Child Abuse linked to Faith or Belief Date: 9th November 2021 Trainer: Rohma Ullah Location: Zoom Time: 9.30am – 1pm Course description: The stories of Victoria Climbie, Ayesha Ali, Kristy Bamu, and Khyra Ishaq (to name a few) highlighted that child abuse linked to faith and belief is another ‘hidden’ form of abuse that professionals should be aware of. The 'National Action Plan to Tackle Child Abuse Linked to Faith or Belief' focuses on the belief in concepts of witchcraft and spirit possession; demons or the devil acting through children or leading them astray; the evil eye or djinns and dakini; ritual or muti murders; and the use of belief in magic or witchcraft to create fear in children to make them more compliant when they are being trafficked for domestic slavery or sexual exploitation. Child abuse linked to faith or belief will present as: neglect, physical, sexual, emotional abuse and the challenge for professionals lies in identifying the underlying cause of the abuse. Course objectives: Gain a greater understanding about what child abuse linked to faith or belief is Gain greater confidence to recognise and support those at risk of abuse linked to faith and belief Understand how to risk assess child abuse linked to faith or belief within a wider context of harmful practices and other safeguarding concerns Identify factors within various faith and belief systems that may make some of these harmful to children and adults Consider different ways to assess the religious/spiritual beliefs of families Learning from serious case reviews and case reviews Target Audience: This event is suitable for professionals in all Working Together Groups.
Safeguarding children with disabilities: Date: 10th November 2021 Trainer: Rahana Hussain, Location: Virtual – MS Teams Time: 09:30 – 14:30 Independent Safeguarding and Child Protection Training Consultant Course description: This one-day event is for multi-agency practitioners who require development in their knowledge of safeguarding children and young people with disabilities. Course objectives: Participants will have: • Developed their knowledge about the ways in which disabled children and young people can be at risk of significant harm • Gained an insight into the ways in which parents and carers of disabled children can be supported • Increased their confidence in working with disabled children and their families Target Audience: This event is suitable for professionals in all Working Together Groups and meets the requirements of Level 3 of the Intercollegiate Document.
Working with black and minority children and families in regards to Child Protection: Date: 15th November 2021 Trainer: Melanie Philips, Location: Zoom CSCP Safeguarding Time: 09:30 – 13:00 Trainer Course description: The aim of the training session is to enhance the knowledge and confidence of multi-agency practitioners in safeguarding BAME children and protecting them from abuse, by exploring the skills required for safe and culturally competent practice. Course objectives: To discuss attitudes and values in relation to black and minority children and families and the impact that these have on practice with children in need or in need of protection To discuss the nature of “culture” and cultural stereotyping and discuss how children can be safeguarded from significant harm whilst still ensuring that cultural diversity is respected and accounted for, working towards culturally competent practice To draw upon theory and research in relation to BAME children and families with particular reference to recent serious case reviews Target Audience: This event is suitable for professionals in all Working Together Groups.
Parental substance misuse and the impact on children: Date: 17th November 2021 Trainer: Mike Smith, Location: Virtual – Zoom Time: 09:30 – 16:00 Independent Safeguarding and Child Protection Training Consultant Course description: This one-day course will develop and extend your ability to recognise and respond effectively in families where parental substance misuse is having an adverse impact on children. Course objectives: By the end of the course you will have: Been introduced to a framework for making sense of the main actions of drugs that are commonly misused Clarified what constitutes ‘drug dependence’, and some of the reasons why a person might use drugs in a dependent and/or problematic way Explored some of the main effects parental substance misuse can have on children at different ages and developmental stages Considered a range of case scenarios to identify concerning information and unknown factors, and linked this to a framework for assessing children’s needs in substance misusing families. Target Audience: This event is suitable for professionals in all Working Together Groups and meets the requirements of Level 3 of the Intercollegiate Document.
Youth gaming and gambling harm prevention: Date: 18th November 2021 Trainer: YGAM Location: Virtual Time: 09:30 – 12:00 Course description: The training has been designed to enable teachers and support staff and youth workers to deliver sessions directly to young people. There are over 450 resources which are aligned to the PSHE and RSE Curriculum for KS2 to KS5. For each year group there is a full scheme of work and six ‘ready to go’ lesson plans, PowerPoints, and infographics, all evidence based for Ofsted. There are a wide range of hands-on youth activities for U13, U16 and 16+. The latest report from the Gambling Commission (October 2019) found that 11% of 11 – 16 year olds had spent their own money on a gambling activity in the last seven days (this equate to 350,000), and 55,000 young people were already identified as problematic gamblers. The Children’s Commissioner found that a staggering 93% of young people play video games, a hugely popular activity which carries a range of potential risks including grooming. This session has been designed to enable youth workers to deliver sessions directly to young people. There are over 450 resources including a wide range of a hands-on activities for U13, U16 and 16+. Course objectives: An overview of how young people growing up in a tech-savvy environment are increasingly exposed to gaming and gambling and how these activities have become normalised and part of everyday culture. To understand the influence of advertising, particularly around sporting events and how this has drifted across into the online world, so that for many, online and real world are intertwined. The role of social media, in game purchases, loot boxes and Esports before unpacking the signs to look out for when an individual is at risk and where to seek help. How to best use our youth resources. These are hands on activities to support purposeful and guided conversations with young people. Child exploitation: Date: 24th November 2021 Trainer: The Children’s Society Location: Virtually – Microsoft Time: 09:30 – 13:00 Teams Aim: This programme will develop your awareness of child exploitation and your responsibilities in responding to concerns. By the end of the programme you will have: 1. Increase awareness of the various types of exploitation and extra familial harm 2. Identify vulnerabilities, behaviour and risk indicators for young people experiencing or at risk of experiencing exploitation 3. Increase your understanding of Camden Vulnerable Adolescent strategy and get a better understanding of local trends, patterns and local data 4. Increase your awareness re: your responsibilities in responding to concerns and how to report into Camden Children and Families Contact Service, which includes the Camden MASH The programme is informed by up-to-date theory, research, case material, law and guidance, and will be delivered via a power point presentation style via MS Teams. Before you join this discussion, it is expected that you have booked on to attend and worked through the reading materials which would have been sent to you 2 days in advance. Managing allegations about members of staff (LADO) briefing: Date: 1st December 2021 Trainer: Local Authority Location: Virtually – Microsoft Time: 14:30 – 16:30 Designated Officer (LADO) Teams Course Description: The CSCP is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children in the borough in all aspects of their lives. To achieve this, the Partnership expects all agencies providing services for children are a safe environment and have policies in place to manage allegations against members of staff where concerns are raised that the person may not be suitable to work with children. Course objectives: • To gain a greater understanding of the role of the LADO • To know how to make a LADO referral when concerns are raised • To gain an understanding of the LADO process following referral Target Audience: This event is suitable for all multi-agency professionals working with Camden children and families.
Safeguarding refresher for senior staff: Date: 8th December 2021 Trainer: Helen Elliott, Location: Virtual – Zoom Time: 09:30 – 13:00 Safeguarding trainer Course description: This event offers an opportunity for senior staff at all levels to refresh and update their knowledge about safeguarding and child protection in line with the expectations in “Working Together”. Course objectives: Participants will have: • Refreshed and updated their safeguarding and child protection knowledge • Considered some of the current issues that present dilemmas for their staff in safeguarding and protecting children and young people • Gained an understanding of how the learning needs of staff at all levels are addressed in multi-agency training Target Audience: This event is suitable for senior staff who have safeguarding responsibilities. Level 3 – 4 training.
This schedule is subject to change and other courses may be added or removed. All applications must be made using the online registration and application system on the website https://cscp.org.uk/training/ To make sure any course is right for you please review the course objectives before making an application and advice should be sought from your manager regarding which courses will meet your individual training needs. The Camden Safeguarding Children Partnership provides safeguarding training free of charge to all agencies working directly with children and young people in Camden. The Partnership expects that all delegates offered a place at the course attend. If delegates cannot attend, the Partnership or training providers need to be notified 7 days in advance in order for the place to be filled by another professional. Failure to attend the training may result in a £125 non-attendance fee being charged to your agency. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) Where can I find information about the multi-agency training programme? If you have registered a training account with us, you will receive regular emails about courses. You can also visit our website: https://cscp.org.uk/training/ where course details are posted as soon as they are available. How do I apply to attend courses? Once you have opened a training account you need to visit the website https://cscp.org.uk/training/calendar-of-events/ and click on the course of your choice. This will open an email link and you can use this to make your application. You cannot apply for a place on a course unless you have first registered with us. You cannot apply for a place on a course for somebody else – they must make their own application. How much does the training cost and what are the cancellation arrangements? CSCP multi-agency courses are funded by the agencies which make up the Partnership. There is no charge for individuals attending CSCP training. Please note that if you are offered a place on a course and do not explain non-attendance or you cancel less than one week before the event you or your agency will be charged a £125 non-attendance fee. We expect that you will have discussed your application and how it meets your training needs before applying and that your manager will facilitate your attendance. If you need to cancel your place – you must do this via the website. If I can’t come can I give my place to someone else from my agency? It may be possible to arrange this, but please ask us before doing this in case we need to offer the place to somebody else already on the waiting list. Will delegates receive certificates on multi-agency courses? Participants will be provided with certificates of attendance if they attend the whole course. Arriving late or leaving early may result in not receiving a certificate. All certificates will be shared within 6-8 weeks of the course. How is it best to contact us?
