BAYARD CLARK Nature Center is operating on an abbreviated schedule with limited capacity. Call PARK & NATURE 910-433-1579 for current hours of operation. Face mask required for entry. CENTER Programs are being offered on a limited basis with registration required. 631 Sherman Drive Precautions necessary to meet state and local guidelines will be taken. In honor of World Wildlife Day, this month’s topic is “Wildlife”. Call by the Mon. before the program to register, space is limited. Nov.-Feb.: Ages 3-6 yrs w/adult; Free Mon-Fri. 10 am-4 pm HOMESCHOOL DISCOVERY SERIES (CLARK PARK): 10-11:30 am This series is designed with homeschoolers in mind to help supplement their curriculum. Call to register, space is limited. All ages welcome; Free LAKE RIM PARK March 4: Soil - Take samples along the trail to view the diversity of soils found at the park. All ages welcome; Free Nov.-Feb.: 7 am-5 pm WILDFLOWER WALK: SPRING EPHEMERALS (CLARK PARK): March 12 3-4:30 pm Office Hours: After the cold, short days of winter, wildflowers burst forth from the earth in the Cape Mon.-Fri. 8 am-5 pm Fear River Valley. These beautiful, delicate, and often short-lived blooms are known as spring ephemerals. Take a guided walk through the woods to search for these seasonal beauties. Call to register, space is limited. Go to the park office to get your first clue and everyone who catches the leprechauns will get part of their treasure! Start times will be staggered, you must call to register for your time. PROGRAMS CONTINUED THE TWISTED TALE OF THE SNAIL (CLARK PARK): March 18 4-5:30 pm If you’re born without bones and the world wants to eat you, what do you do? If you’re a snail you grow a spiral shell to protect yourself. Learn all about snails; how they eat, where they live, and how they get around. Participants get a free whelk shell and the chance to try escargot (a.k.a. cooked snails)! Call to register, space is limited. Fee paid day of class, cash only. All ages welcome; $1 EXPLORING ANIMALS THAT LAY EGGS (LAKE RIM PARK): March 23 4-5 pm Birds aren’t the only ones that lay eggs. Find out what other animals are egg layers and discuss how their eggs differ. Afterward, craft your own egg decorations. Call to register, space is limited. Fee paid day of class, cash only. All ages welcome; $2 N.C. FOSSILS (CLARK PARK): March 25 4-5:30 pm Life from North Carolina’s ancient past has been preserved in the state’s rocks and sediments in the form of fossils. Learn about the creatures that called N.C. home as you view a locally collected fossil collection. Bring fossils for identification and look for real fossil shark teeth you get to keep. Call to register, space is limited. All ages welcome; Free CAMPFIRE PROGRAM (CLARK PARK): March 26 5:30-7 pm Gather around the campfire for an evening of s’mores, storytelling, skits, songs, and games. Fun for the whole family! Dress for the outdoors and bring water and a flashlight. Meet at the nature center for a short walk to the campground. Promptness is essential. Call to register, space is limited. Fee paid day of class, cash only. Ages 5+; $3 LAKE RIM KAYAK TOUR (LAKE RIM PARK): March 27 9:30-11 am Lake tours are perfect for those trying kayaking for the first time and seasoned paddlers looking to relax on the water. All the equipment and basic instruction for beginners will be provided. We recommend beginners participate in a lake tour before going on a kayak trip. Tour is dependent on the weather. Participants under 16 must be accompanied by a participating adult. Registration begins Feb. 27, space is limited. Call or pay online at register.ci.fayetteville.nc.us Adults and children ages 10+; $15 INTERPRETIVE WALK (LAKE RIM PARK): March 30 4-5:30 pm Participate in Take a Walk in a Park Day by going on a 1-mile guided tour of the Border Trail. Learn about the history, plants, and animals of the Lake Rim area and the Sandhills. The pace will be leisurely with plenty of opportunities for questions. Call to register. All ages welcome; Free I SPY EASTER CHALLENGE (LAKE RIM PARK): April 1-5 Search for the pine cone Easter bunny and friends anytime you visit the park April 1 through 5 and capture them in a picture. Drop by the park office April 5 through 9 between 9 am and 5 pm to receive a special treat for your sleuthing. TUESDAY CHALLENGE Check out our Facebook page to learn the weekly challenge that will help you foster your love of nature and the outdoors! If you have not visited Clark Park and the Nature Center in the past year you should stop by. New exhibits on turtles and insects and a diorama of 38 miniature wildlife sculptures have been added among other updates. Clark Park has also partnered with the Cumberland County Public Library and Information Center to be an official site of a StoryWalk®, a walkable storybook feature. New features were made possible through the generosity of the Cape Fear River Basin Environmental Fund, Waverly C. Broadwell Family Environmental Education Fund, and Women’s Giving Circle of Cumberland County, through the Cumberland Community Foundation, Inc.
