Forest Therapy is a rapidly growing global practice. In 1984 Japanese researchers and health care advocates launched a practice called “Shinrin-yoku” (Forest Bathing). They established a system of trails and guides who support visitors in healthful forest- based activities. In South Korea there is a robust national movement to integrate forest wellness into health care and the economy at multiple levels. The Association of Nature and Forest Therapy Guides and Programs (ANFT), launched in 2012, adapted elements of shinrin-yoku and combined them with insights of ecopsychology. As of the end of 2018, ANFT has trained and certified over 700 guides in 44 countries. Forest Therapy is a health care practice. A host of studies have shown numerous beneficial effects of forest therapy. Pioneering physicians in many countries are prescribing time in nature as a preventive measure and an antidote to stress- related illness. Forest Therapy is environmental activism. Guided forest therapy walks encourage people to connect more deeply with the natural world around them. This strengthens the bonds between people and nature. It encourages deeper understanding of the stakes of environmental degradation and stronger commitment to activism. Forest Therapy is reciprocal. We depart from the point of view that holds nature as a basket of resources that exists for humans to exploit. Instead, forest therapy practice develops a very visceral sense of the relatedness of all things. It’s not about the forest healing humans; it’s about humans and the forest healing each other. Forest Therapy is right for the times. Join us at the First International Conference, Congress, and Symposium. Meet the researchers, practitioners, and activists who JAPAN are leading this field. Explore how your organization can weave SOUTH KOREA forest therapy insights, methods, and principles into your work. Contribute your expertise. Become a part of the global ecosystem ANFT of forest therapy professionals.
PROFESSIONS GATHERED FOREST THERAPY PRACTITIONERS A grassroots movement: Certified Forest Therapy guides, coaches and therapist are introducing nature connection into many different cultural sectors through their personal, professional and local networks. HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS As Outdoor Rx is becoming a recognized component in healthcare, new opportunities for research and groundbreaking projects in the field are emerging. At the conference, healthcare professionals come together to discover connections and discuss new projects. ECO TOURISM ANFT is promoting the installation of certified forest therapy trails around the world, attracting tourists. Early adopters like retreat centers and travel organizations play an important role in raising awareness and encouraging authentic nature connection. We will feature a special presentation on our work with the Costa Rican government. HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY In keeping up with the latest wellness trends, hospitality businesses are promoting the benefits of “unplugging” and implementing restorative practices such as mindfulness, meditation, and breathwork—all of which are incorporated into forest bathing. PARK MANAGEMENT Managers of local, regional, state and national parks are integrating ParksRx and Forest Therapy into their programming. This is bringing new visitors, and renewing a long-existing purpose: for parks to bring joy to people and preserve nature. and . . . a CONGRESS OF THOUGHT LEADERS, INFLUENCERS and INNOVATORS Industry authors, educators, activists and members of the scientific community come together to share experiences, new ideas and research to shape the emerging field of Forest Therapy.
