Welcome from the President Our Royal Queensland Show (Ekka) competitions showcase the best of Queensland, providing reward and recognition for our talented exhibitors. In 2019 we welcomed more than 21,000 entries across 42 competition sections. Competitions lie at the heart of the show. In 2019 there was an increase in entries across many sections including canine, fine arts and farriers and blacksmiths. Entry numbers for our stud beef and led steer competitions also increased, which was very pleasing considering the impact of the drought. More than 4,198 dedicated exhibitors entered our competitions for a chance to share in the $601,000 prize pool and claim a coveted blue ribbon. This included 1,464 new competitors – a 20 per cent increase on the previous year. Last year we also won 24 international awards, including eight first places, at the International Association of Fairs and Expositions (IAFE) Awards, which represents more than 1,100 fairs around the world. Our horse, creative art and craft, education on show, school garden, school scarecrow, canine and floristry competitions were all recognised – a testament to how our competitions rank on the world stage. The Ekka attracts on average more than 400,000 people, with the competitions proving the highlight for many. Built on tradition, competitions stem back to the first show in 1876 which included horses, cattle, sheep, dogs, poultry, art and education. Since 1875, the RNA has been celebrating and championing agriculture and the critical role it plays in the everyday lives of Queenslanders. We remain committed to showcasing agriculture and supporting our hard-working farming families. Good luck with your entries and we look forward to seeing you at the 2020 Royal Queensland Show.
