Adjudicators Kate Schirmer graduated from the University of Queensland (UQ) in 2004 with a Bachelor of Music with First Class Honours, majoring in vocal performance, and from the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University (QCGU) in 2015 with a Masters of Music Studies in vocal pedagogy. She remains active as a cabaret and music theatre performer in and around Brisbane. As a conductor, Kate has worked with a number of church, school and community choirs over many years, and was guest conductor of the Queensland Kodaly Choir “Big Sing” event in 2010. Kate currently conducts the Queensland Show Choir’s young adult ensemble, Voiceworks, and acts as Artistic Director of the organisation. In late 2014, Kate performed with The Rolling Stones as part of their Australian tour, with the 24- piece “Vibrancy” Choir. Kate presented at the 2017 International Congress of Voice Teachers (ICVT) in Stockholm, Sweden on her work with teaching singing to actors, supported by the Arts Queensland Individuals Fund. In 2018 she travelled to Philadelphia for the 2018 Care of the Professional Voice Symposium to appear on a panel speaking about synergies in contemporary voice pedagogy, representing musical theatre. Kate spent her formative musical years in Bundaberg, and could not be more grateful to the Bundaberg Eisteddfod committee to be asked to return “home” and be a part of this event. Kyle Walmsley is a director, performer and theatre maker having worked with companies around Australia including Queensland Arts Council/ArtsLink, Darwin Community Arts, Brown's Mart Theatre, Darwin Festival, Polyglot, Canberra Youth Theatre, The Flying Fruit Fly Circus and HotHouse Theatre. Kyle has won Theatre awards for his devised and self performed works for Darwin and Newcastle Fringe Festivals. Kyle has trained at Ecole Philippe Gaulier in Paris, the Upright Citizen's Brigade and the University of Southern Queensland. Dr Fletcher Mitchell is an International Euphonium Soloist who grew up in Bundaberg and is now based in Brisbane. He has travelled to more than 40 countries around the world as a guest soloist, conductor, adjudicator, and educator. He is the euphonium lecturer at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, low brass lecturer at the University of Queensland, and holds a Ph.D. researching 'The Emergence of Australian Solo Euphonium Repertoire'. Music CONDITIONS OF ENTRY 1. Competition is only open to amateurs who are 19 years of age or under. The term “Amateur” means one whose principal source of income is not derived from the exercise of his or her talent in the particular class for which he or she may have entered. This condition does not apply to conductors or accompanists. 2. No entry will be accepted unless accompanied by full fee and the committee reserves the right to refuse any entry. 3. Solo Competitors can compete only once in a section unless playing from a different family of instruments. 4. In sections for duets and groups, no competitor shall compete with more than one party in a particular section, unless playing from a different family of instruments. 5. The committee reserves the right to transfer competitors to the section above or below in Own Choice sections where there are insufficient competitors to constitute an event. 6. It is the competitor’s responsibility to see that they have correct set pieces, edition and setting as stated in the schedule of competition, otherwise competitors will be disqualified. 7. All accompaniments must abide by individual section rules - please check your section in regards to what is deemed appropriate. Unless otherwise stated, all sections are to be performed with accompaniment. This may be: - Acoustic accompaniment (eg piano, ukulele, guitar etc). One instrument only. There will be no facilities for instruments to be electrified in solo sections for the use of accompaniment . 8. Competitors, accompanists, etc must be present at the time specified for the item in which they are competing and assemble at the place specified by the Chairman of Sessions. 9. Competitors will compete in the order as shown in the program unless instructed otherwise by the Chairman of Sessions. 10. The Executive reserves the right to amend the printed program should it be considered necessary. 11. OWN CHOICE: Marks will be awarded for quality of selections. No competitor may use the same Own Choice in more than one section. Competitors may not use an Own Choice selection with which he or she has gained a prize during the 2019 Bundaberg Eisteddfod. A Set Piece may not be used as an Own Choice selection. Competitors can perform a piece only once in the eisteddfod. 12. Do not submit originals for Own Choice work as all copies will be destroyed by the Committee after each session. 13. Any competitor who does not submit a copy of their Own Choice selection can still perform but WILL NOT be eligible for any placing. An adjudication will still be provided. 14. Anyone experiencing difficulty in obtaining set music pieces should email be@bundabergeisteddfod.com.au and your email will be forwarded to the appropriate person/s. 15. No parent, teacher, conductor or competitor may address the adjudicator before or during a session. 16. No parent shall be allowed on the performing area, except as accompanist or conductor.
Music CONDITIONS OF ENTRY CONT. 17. The Adjudicator’s decision shall be final, except if it subsequently transpires that some error in identity has taken place, then the Executive shall have the power to decide. 18. Protests must be lodged in writing with the Secretary within 30 minutes of the cause of such protest arising, accompanied by a fee of $5-00 which will be forfeited if the protest be deemed frivolous. The decision of the Eisteddfod Committee executive is final. 19. No prize will be awarded where the Adjudicator considers merit insufficient. 20. No ties will be awarded. A 1st and 2nd and 3rd (and highly commended award/s) where the adjudicator feels it is warranted. 21. In sections with three or fewer competitors, the adjudicator may decide to award only one prize. 22. All competitors will receive an adjudication sheet. 23. Vocal solos and duets in all age groups may be sung in any key and transposed if necessary. 24. There will be only one clear-cut winner for Special awards. 25. Time limits: Please refer to your individual section rules. These are non-negotiable. 26. It is the parents’ responsibility to inform the Committee if they do not wish their child to be photographed for possible media publication. 27. Competitors should avoid the use of words that are not regarded as acceptable in a family group or polite society. Contestants using ‘unacceptable’ words could face disqualification. 28. Competitors must perform within the section as scheduled in the program. 29. Novice Definition: competitors who have been learning on their nominated instrument for 18 months or lesson and have not placed previously in any section of the music eisteddfod. 30. Competitors in the 2022 Bundaberg Regional Eisteddfod, will perform (a) From an original published edition of the sheet music: or (b) From a photocopy, transcription or arrangement of sheet music that is accompanied by a letter from the music publisher authorizing the use of this photocopy, transcription or arrangement: or (c) From sheet music where both the work and edition are out of copyright* or (d) By ear. *Composer/lyricist/arranger ALL died before 1955 and the edition publication date was more than 25 years ago. 31. The Committee will not be liable for any copyright infringements relating to the use of photocopies should they occur. 32. Speech & Drama CONDITIONS OF ENTRY 1. Competition is only open to amateurs who are 19 years of age and under. The term “amateur” meaning one whose principal source of income is not derived from the exercise of his or her talent in the particular class for which he or she may have entered. This condition does not apply to conductors or accompanists. 2. No entry will be accepted unless accompanied by the full fee and the Committee reserves the right to refuse any entry. 3. The name of the competitor and not “Nom de Plume” is to be shown and all competitors are numbered consecutively in the Programme Sections. 4. Competitors can compete only once in a Section. 5. In Sections for Duologues, Poetry in Pairs or Trios and Groups, no competitor shall compete with more than one party in a particular Section. 6. The Committee reserves the right to transfer competitors to the Section above or below in Sections where there are insufficient competitors to constitute an event. 7. It is the competitors’ responsibility to see that they have the correct Set Pieces as stated in the Schedule of Competition. Otherwise, competitors will be disqualified. 8. Competitors, accompanists, etc., must be present at the time specified for the item in which they are competing and assemble at the place specified by the Chairman of Sessions. 9. Competitors will compete in the order as shown in the Programme unless instructed otherwise by the Chairman of Sessions. 10. The Executive reserves the right to amend the printed Programme should it be considered necessary. 11. OWN CHOICE: Marks will be awarded for the quality of selections. No competitor may use the same Own Choice selection in more than one Section. A competitor may not use an Own Choice selection with which he or she gained a prize during the 2017 Bundaberg Eisteddfod. A Set Piece may not be used as an Own Choice selection. Competitors can perform a piece only once in the Eisteddfod. All Competitors must supply their own individual copies of their Own Choice selections for the Adjudication. Do not submit originals for Own Choice work as all copies will be destroyed by the Committee after the Section. 12. Conductors, accompanists and competitors must use original scripts for performances. The committee will not be liable for any copyright infringements relating to the use of photocopies should they occur. 13. Anyone experiencing difficulty in obtaining Speech and Drama Pieces should contact the Speech and Drama Co-ordinator. 14. NO PARENT, TEACHER, CONDUCTOR OR COMPETITOR may address the Adjudicator before or during a Session. 15. No parent shall be allowed on the performing area, except as a conductor. 16. The adjudicator’s decision shall be final, except if it subsequently transpires that some error in identity has taken place. Then the Executive shall have the power to decide.
Speech & Drama CONDITIONS OF ENTRY CONT. 17. Protests (if any) must be lodged in writing with the Secretary within 30 minutes of the cause of such protest arising, accompanied by a fee of $5.00 which will be forfeited if the protest be deemed frivolous. The decision of the Eisteddfod Committee Executive is final. 18. No prize will be awarded where the Adjudicator considers merit insufficient. 19. No ties will be awarded. A 1st and 2nd and 3rd (and highly commended award/s) where the adjudicator feels it is warranted. 20. In sections with three or fewer competitors, the adjudicator may decide to award only one prize. 21. The Adjudicator will provide all competitors with an adjudication sheet. 22. No member may perform in more than one competing Choir in a particular Section. No preliminary contests are to be held in Choral Sections. 23. There must be only one clear-cut winner for Special Awards. 24. All trophies or prizes donated for the annual competition together with suggested conditions relating to their award should be sent to the Secretary of the Eisteddfod Committee. Such trophies will remain the property of the Committee, until won outright, but, in the interim, may be held by the winners at one Eisteddfod. The temporary holders of the trophies will be responsible for their safe custody. 25. All competitors, conductors and accompanists take part in the Eisteddfod at their own risk. 26. Time limits as per each section, where not specified: 12 years and under 3 minutes 13 to 18 years 4 minutes 27. It is the parents’ responsibility to inform the committee if they do not wish their child to be photographed for possible media publication. 28. In Speech and Drama Sections, competitors should avoid the use of words and content that is not regarded as acceptable in a family group or polite society. Competitors using “unacceptable” words or content could face disqualification. 29. Competitors MUST perform within the Section as scheduled in the Programme. 30. Novice Definition: competitors who have not placed previously in any section in any speech and drama eisteddfod. 31. The Committee reserves the right to split/combine sections where applicable dependant on the number of entrants in each section

Saturday 7th May WORKSHOPS 9am - CQU Tertiary parthways presentation 9.30-12pm Adjudicator Workshops Vocal - Led by Kate Schirmer "Acting through song & preparing for tertiary auditions" This workshop will focus on preparing material with an emphasis on song mapping and building character and story through musics and lyrics. Primarily with a focus on the styles of Musical Theatre, Classsical and Contemporary Vocal Workshop presented by ANATS Acting - Led by Kyle Walmsley "Bringing character to life" This workshop will use games, improvisation, and exercises in order to explore a variety of ways to bring characters from the page to stage. Characters appear in many forms including prose, poetry and plays, but how do we know what the author intended and how to play them? In this physical and fun workshop, participants will be up on their feet, exploring, playing and experimenting, so please bring a water bottle and wear comfortable clothing you can move in Instrumental - Led by Fletcher Mitchell “Strategies for better home practice and progression between lessons” With a strong focus on how to utilise conscious practice at home to achieve progression in between lessons and tuition.
