Welcome Now that the 2017 Artistic Gymnastics Europeans in the Romanian city Cluj-Napoca have come to an end, the focus of the UEG shifts fully towards Glasgow 2018. We are proud to be part of this new multi – sport event, bringing together some of the continents leading sports and existing European Championships. Glasgow has a superb track-record in organising sport events and we can count on many gymnastics fans to join the enthusiasm of the Scottish crowd to support all athletes and make it a Georges Gulzaec Championships to remember. It’s also a great occasion to promote our sport amongst President, UEG other sports fans and stand out on TV. Glasgow has established itself as one of the most exciting places in the world to host major sporting events and we are delighted that the Glasgow 2018 European Championships will once again shine a light on the city and its wonderful people. The city’s passion for gymnastics and sport in general was highlighted during the 2014 Commonwealth Games and again during the FIG World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in 2015. Both events proved memorable for athletes, officials and fans Jane Allen and we are all eager to see the sport make its return to Scotland and The SSE Hydro in CEO, British Gymnastics August 2018. Olympic gold medalist Max Whitlock has remarked that Glasgow crowds are the loudest he has ever experienced and we expect the noise levels to increase even further as fans watch some of the world’s best gymnasts compete for the status of European Champion. A home crowd can have such a positive impact on our athletes and there’s no doubt that the crowds at Glasgow 2018 will ensure that everyone enjoys their moment; win or lose. Euan Lowe The SSE Hydro will once again provide a fitting platform for elite and junior gymnasts CEO, Scottish Gymnastics to showcase their remarkable talents within this exciting multi-sport format. We hope that by hosting another significant gymnastics event in Glasgow, we can inspire the next generation of young gymnasts to spring ahead and fulfill their ambitions within the sport. It is hard to believe that we are only 15 months away from the Glasgow 2018 European Championships. Excitement is building with each passing day as we look forward to what will be a new highlight on the global sporting calendar. We are delighted that the European Artistic Gymnastics Championships will be at the heart of the action. Colin Hartley Over the years, The SSE Hydro has been home to some of the world’s most prestigious Championships Director, sporting events and in 2015 it hosted the FIG World Artistic Gymnastics Championships Glasgow 2018 – one of the most successful editions of the event and I’m sure it will shine once again in the spotlight next year. The event itself will give fans the opportunity to see Europe’s world-class gymnasts in action and I am sure they will turn out in large numbers. Working closely with our partners at UEG, British Gymnastics and Scottish Gymnastics we are determined to deliver an event that takes European gymnastics to the next level.
About the Championships A new era in world sport will get underway in the summer of 2018 as Glasgow and Berlin host the inaugural European Championships — an exciting new multi-sport event bringing together some of the continent’s leading sports, with Glasgow and Scotland hosting Aquatics, Cycling, Golf, Gymnastics, Rowing and Triathlon, and Berlin hosting Athletics. To be staged every four years starting in August 2018, the European Championships will be a new highlight on the global sporting calendar, elevating the status of European Champions during an 11- day celebration of world-class sport and a packed 10-day broadcast schedule. Scotland’s recent sporting journey has been nothing short of remarkable. Fresh from delivering the best ever Commonwealth Games in 2014, The 2014 Ryder Cup and the 2015 World Gymnastics Championships, Glasgow and Scotland will play host to 12 sporting disciplines as part of the Glasgow 2018 European Championships. The Championships will take Scotland’s sporting reputation to the next level. A potential television audience of up to 1.03 billion across Europe is set to watch the action. Our venues will again be in the spotlight with the event being covered by free-to-air broadcasters, including the BBC, across the continent. Delivered in partnership with the European sports federations and supported by Glasgow City Council and the Scottish Government, the Championships will allow the hosts to continue their legacy journey by inspiring the next generation of young athletes as well as offering cultural and volunteering opportunities. An action-packed programme of cultural activity will run alongside the Championships, capitalising on Glasgow and Scotland’s international reputation for creative excellence and allowing everyone to play their part in the celebrations. Glasgow’s iconic George Square will form the beating heart of these activities, alongside Merchant City Festival, with other live sites planned across the country. 2018 will be Scotland’s Year of Young People and we look forward to celebrating the role that young people play in sport and culture, and the crucial contributions they will make to Glasgow 2018.

Glasgow – Host City Glasgow’s recent sporting journey has been nothing short of remarkable. Fresh from delivering the best-ever Commonwealth Games in 2014 and the 2015 FIG World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, we are currently one of the world’s top five sporting cities. Glasgow’s success is built on our international events programme, our continued investment in world-class facilities such as the Emirates Arena and our commitment to increasing participation and securing a lasting legacy for future generations. Close to £200m has been spent on new and improved venues since 2009, as part of a citywide £1bn investment in infrastructure. These venues have been home to some of the world’s biggest and best sporting events over the years. And there is more to come including the Glasgow 2018 European Championships, which we are all looking forward to. Also on the horizon are the 2017 Total BWF Badminton World Championships, 2019 European Athletics Indoor Championships and 2019 European Short Course Swimming Championships. But it is about much more than elite competition. At the same time as hosting world-class events the number of people in our city taking part in sport is now at an all-time high. The sport sector also supports around 10,000 jobs in the city and contributes approximately £370 million to Glasgow’s thriving economy. Glasgow really is a sporting city like no other. Councillor Susan Aitken Leader of Glasgow City Council
Welcome to Scotland Scotland’s sporting reputation has never been higher thanks in part to playing host to what is regarded as the best ever Commonwealth Games and a spectacular Ryder Cup in 2014. Glasgow 2014 reinforced Scotland’s status as one of the world’s leading major events destinations. But far from being just about sport, the Games were an essential element of a wider strategic goal to boost Scotland’s key tourism and events industries. We used the Games as a catalyst to secure further major events for Scotland, both in the lead up to and beyond 2014, with a view to boosting the local and national economy and cementing Scotland’s international profile as a world-class destination for business, events and tourism. Since the Commonwealth Games, a further 37 major events have been secured or delivered in Scotland, with an estimated economic impact of over £14m, showing just how important sport is to our economy. But it is not just sport that Scotland is famous for. We are renowned for our warm welcome and beautiful scenery, with Lonely Planet recently naming Scotland as one of the top three countries to visit. High praise indeed and a reflection of what makes Scotland so special. Aileen Campbell MSP Scottish Government Minister for Sport
The Venue The SSE Hydro on the banks of the River Clyde is widely regarded as one of the world’s leading entertainment and sports venues. The multi-purpose indoor arena is located within the Scottish Event Campus and was officially opened in September 2013. With a capacity for sports events of up to 8,000 people, The SSE Hydro was modelled on Greek and Roman amphitheatres. The 45m tall building, with its distinctive silver dome, stands higher than the neighbouring Armadillo. Translucent materials used in the facade give the building a colourful glow at night. The SSE Hydro has been designed from the inside out. Spectators can enjoy outstanding viewing angles from every seat in the in the tiered and demountable seating system and the acoustics are of the highest standard helping cement its growing reputation. Since first opening its doors The SSE Hydro has established itself as Scotland’s premier venue of its kind and was ranked as the eighth-busiest music arena in the world in terms of ticket sales. Over the years it has also been home to some of the world’s most prestigious sporting events including the gymnastics and netball at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. In 2015 it hosted the FIG World Artistic Gymnastics Championships – one of the most successful editions of the event. With attendances of close to 80,000 people, the event was credited with setting a new benchmark for gymnastics by FIG President, Professor Bruno Grandi. The SSE Hydro was pivotal in this achievement, breaking convention with a number of innovations including an incredible ‘Mega Wall’ screen and an eye-catching podium design, both of which were well received by the gymnasts over 10 days of top class competition. The Glasgow 2018 European Championships will see world-class gymnastics make a welcome return to this spectacular venue with Europe’s finest male and female gymnasts once again set to go for gold.
