Will your child have to cross busy streets or have to board a bus on a busy highway? Safety Town is a nationally-acclaimed program which teaches life-long safety habits. Safe travel to and from school, bus safety, fire safety, home safety, water safety, bicycle safety, poisons, and how to deal with strangers will be included in these comprehensive one-week sessions. Children will become familiar with important vehicles such as a school bus, police car, and fire truck. Safety Town is co- sponsored by the Bryan Kiwanis Club, Bryan Police & Fire Departments, and the Recreation Department. The fee is $10.00 per child, which includes a tee-shirt. All classes are held for a one week period, Monday thru Friday (5 days). Registration forms will be available at Kindergarten Registration in April and at the Parks and Recreation Department Office. TOT LEAGUE BASEBALL - For girls & boys, ages 4 - 6 (by May 1st), this FUN summer league utilizes a batting tee and shortened bases to develop future ball players. Fundamentals (hitting, throwing, fielding, base running, rules, etc.), sportsmanship, and teamwork are stressed more than winning or losing. Registration forms will be distributed through the schools in April or they can be picked up at the Parks and Recreation office. Registration forms will also be available at Kindergarten Registration in April. Deadline to register is MAY 11th. Games played following the end of the school year. Fee is $10.00. ATTENTION: ADULT COACHES ARE NEEDED. BASEBALL KNOWLEDGE HELPFUL, BUT NOT REQUIRED. CALL 419-633-6030 FOR A FUN EXPERIENCE. ARTS & CRAFT CAMP - (Ages 3 - 10) Make room on the refrigerator! Your child will create art to display. Children will have the opportunity to make fun, hands on art projects with adult supervision. Classes will be held in the East End Community Room. Different projects will be made in each session. Each class will run Monday through Thursday and all materials will be provided. There is a limit of 12 students per age group, per class. ages 3-4, 9:30 - 10:00AM $10.00 per class ages 5-7, 10:15 - 11:15 AM $15.00 per class ages 8-10, 11:30 AM-12:30 PM $15.00 per class Session I: June 25th - 28th Session II: July 9th - 12th “STORIES IN THE PARKS” READING PROGRAM - The Williams County Public Library will again bring their reading program to the parks this summer and will be visiting a site near you. We encourage kids and teens to read throughout the summer to keep up the skills they have learned during the school year. Story Times in the Parks are at 10:00 AM, in case of inclement weather stories will be at the library, dates and locations are as follow: Friday, June 15th, at Hitt Park Friday, June 22nd, at Mattie Marsh Park Friday, June 29th, at Garver Park Friday, July 13th, at Moore Park Friday, July 20th, at East End Park Friday, July 27th at Roseland Park Children and teens who participate in summer reading programs benefit from the many engaging activities and opportu- nities, which promote literacy development and student learning and help to counter the summer slide. Summer library programs for all ages enhance lifelong learning and provide meaningful, enjoyable experiences that are available to eve- ryone in the Community. Summer Reading programs start the week of June 11th. Story Times will also be available at the Library starting the second week of June; on Tuesdays at 11:00 AM and 6:30 PM; which include stories, crafts, and singing to help early literacy skills. Mondays: 10:00AM - Morning Movie and 6:00PM - Baby Lapsit. Tuesdays: 6:00PM Let’s Move. Wednesdays they have a Let’s Move class at 11:00 which includes singing dancing, using bells, ribbons, shakers, and etc and Lego Club at 6:30PM. Thursday’s they will host Lego Club at 4:00PM; Legos will be sup- plied for you to build creations and Art Works for ages 7-10 at 5:30PM. Stop and pick up a flyer of all summer events. Lace up your shoes and head outside to explore. Drop your little hunter off at the Jaycee Pavilion in the Recreation Park and Junior Girl Scout Troop #11071 will take them on a scavenger hunt in the Park and have them paint rocks to hide. Quickchange. When children learn to appreciate and enjoy nature they are more likely to grow into adults who value and protect our environment. Saturday July 14 2:30 PM Jaycee Pavilion near the Imagination Station Fee $5.00 WATER AEROBICS Looking for a cool way to get fit this summer? Give this Water Aerobics Class a try!! With water aero- bics you burn calories and tone muscles while staying cool in the water. This class will use aerobics and toning moves usually done on land; but you will be doing the moves in chest high water. This class is a great workout for all fitness levels and ages. (The pool is closed to other swimmers during class and no pool pass is needed to participate) Instructor: Dawn Davis. Tuesdays & Thursdays, 5:30-6:30 PM East End Pool 6 weeks for $30.00 Begins June 26th BASIC DOG OBEDIENCE/MANNERS CLASS - (Dogs 5 months and older.) Want to have a better relationship with your dog and have some fun? In this class you will learn how to create a peaceful home environment with your dog aided by instructor, Amy L. Snyder. This Basic Dog Obedi- ence/Manners Class you will not only learn how to train your dog in everyday commands such as sit, stay, and down; you will also learn to prevent or correct some unwanted behaviors. This class is great for the first time dog owners, shelter dogs, or anyone who feels the need for a refresher course. All stu- dents must bring a copy of their dogs current vaccination record to the first class. Classes are limited to eight people/dogs to ensure that no one gets lost in the crowd and will be held for six consecutive Satur- day’s. Equipment required for this class is a buckle collar, a 6 foot leather/nylon leash, and a lot of treats. NO CHAIN LEADS! Mondays, 6:45PM Community Center; upstairs 4 weeks for $10.00, or walk in for $5.00 per night Starts June 4th ATS BELLY DANCE CLASS (ages 15 and up) American Tribal Style belly dance celebrates the beauty and strength of women growing together in community. A stylized format of steps, cues, and the familiarity of musical phrasing allow dancers to create an improvisational tapestry of move- ment each time they dance. ATS is an energizing blend of pan-Mediterranean, Gypsy inspired dance forms that will tone the entire body, strengthen the core, provide aerobic exercise, and enhance grace. Get in fantastic shape and have fun while learning this beautiful art form! Each session of classes will run for 8 consecutive weeks on Tuesdays, and the fee is $50.00. Space is limited, so please pre- register with the Parks and Recreation office at 419-633-6030 to reserve your spot. Students should wear comfortable clothing that is not too loose and may dance barefoot or in ballet slippers. A scarf tied around the hips is helpful, as is an exercise mat for cooling down at the end of class. No prior dance ex- perience is necessary. Instructor - Rita Michele. TENNIS INSTRUCTION - An experienced tennis Coach, Mitchell Owens, will be teaching two classes: “Beginners and Beyond" and "Introduction to Varsity Tennis.” (See below for more details.) Bring your own tennis racquet, plenty of water and dress comfortably with prop- er tennis shoes and learn a great life-long recreational sport that not only promotes physical fitness but also serves as a fun-filled activity that the whole family can enjoy! All classes are held at the Recreation Park tennis courts, which are near the Imagination Station. Cost is $50.00 per student, per class. Students may take both classes if they meet the criteria. IMPORTANT: If you are unsure if classes will be held because of inclement weather, call the Parks & Recreation Office (419-633-6030). BEGINNERS AND BEYOND (Ages 8 - Adult welcome) This class is specifically designed for both beginner AND intermediate players. Based on an initial skill evaluation, beginner and intermediate players will be separated to enhance their learning experiences. For the beginner, the fundamentals of tennis will be taught so that by the end of the week each student will grasp basic skills such as proper grip, stance, forehand, backhand, volleys, serves, and singles/doubles rules. The intermediate players will begin refining their basic strokes while learning higher level strokes, skills, and strategy. All instruction is taught in a fun and enjoyable learning environment. Choose from morning or evening classes. June 18 - 22, 8:30-9:30AM OR 6:30 - 7:30 PM INTRODUCTION TO VARSITY TENNIS (Entering grades 7-10) This class is specifically designed to introduce and prepare students for High School Varsity Tennis. Wheth- er participants are in middle school or high school, this class features more individualized instruction as students spend a week learning team drills and skills at the pace of a varsity tennis practice. Upon completion of the class, players will be given a personalized written assessment tool which may be utilized to improve their skill sets and prepare for competitive tennis. Students who taken this class in prior years often perform ahead of their peers entering the high school tennis program - so get a head start! (Interested players are encouraged to take the BEGIN- NERS AND BEYOND course prior Intro to Varsity as basic skills will NOT be taught during this class and play- ers are expected to know all basic terminology which is taught in the Beginners and Beyond class.) June 25 - 29, 6:30 - 7:30 PM MOUNTAIN DULCIMER LESSONS - Are you one of the many people who have come under the en- chanting spell of the dulcimer? Hauntingly beautiful, this instrument is deeply rooted in the folk music heritage of our country. Originating in the Appalachian Mountains in the early 1800’s, the dulcimer be- came somewhat of a forgotten instrument in the early 1900’s before making a gradual comeback during the past four decades. Now you can learn to play this early American instrument so that you can entertain yourself and others. If you have a dulcimer at home, bring it to class. If you don’t have one, several dul- cimers will be provided. Limit 20 per class. Instructor is Grace Fish. German is one of the major languages of the world and around 90-98 million people use this language for communication. This class is intended for students without any prior knowledge of the lan- guage and/or beginners with very little previous knowledge who would like to gain basic knowledge of German for everyday life, work, and travel. Students may give ideas on areas (business, cooking, travel, etc.) that they are interested in learning the German language in. SWIMMING LESSONS How many times will you and your children go swimming, boating, fishing, or participate in some other wa- ter-related activity this summer? For a non-swimmer every minor water accident can turn into a disaster. Take the most basic of precautions and LEARN HOW TO SWIM. Sessions last 8 days (Monday thru Thursday for 2 weeks). The cost is $20.00 per session. There is a minimum of 4 persons required for a class to be held. PAYMENT IS REQUIRED AT TIME OF REGISTRATION. YOU MUST REGISTER IN PERSON. You will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the session. No refunds after 2 lessons. Classes are divided as follows: Infant/Toddler Level 6 months to 3 years. Requires parent accompaniment in the water. Lessons last 30 minutes. Limit of 6 to 8 participants. Pre School Level 3 to 5 year olds who have not had water experiences or who show some fear of the water. Parent accompaniment in the water optional. Lessons last 40 minutes. Limit of 8 to 10 participants. Level 1: Water Exploration. Help child feel comfortable in the water & to enjoy the water safely. Level 2: Primary Skills. To teach breath control, floating, and beginning movement in the water. Level 3: Stroke Readiness. To further development of the crawl stroke, combined back strokes, and to introduce the elementary backstroke. Level 4: Stroke Development. Introduces the sidestroke, breaststroke, and starts developing endurance. Level 5: Stroke refinement, Level 6: Skill Proficiency, Level 7: Advanced skills, and Adult lessons available as needed. *Note: All above classes must have a minimum of four registrants in order to be held.
