As ever, there is a mix of chamber music genres – string quartets and a trio, both long-standing and up and coming; the outstanding young German pianist, Elisabeth Brauss, and the return of our President, Roderick Williams, to sing for us, accompanied by Susie Allan. Joining the Club for a series of six (or, if you wish, seven) concerts gives significant savings. This season each concert costs just £15, with no booking fees. ARRANGEMENTS FOR 2022-23 Although we are called a Club, anyone can join – and anyone can attend concerts without joining. You therefore have the option of joining the Club, or of buying tickets singly from Malvern Theatres (MT) box office for each performance. Besides their high quality – and there is possibly no higher standard to be heard outside London, if at all – our concerts offer exceptional value for money to members. A subscription for the season provides these benefits: • Concerts at just £15 each, compared to £23 from the box office (plus MT fees) • No MT Theatres’ Heritage Fund contribution or MT booking fees payable • A free ticket to each concert for one young person under 18 • The freedom to transfer your ticket to someone else • The chance to participate in Club affairs You are invited to subscribe for a series of six Thursday concerts at a cost of £90 – equating to just £15 per concert. Alternatively, you can opt for the full seven concert series on the same basis, which includes February’s piano recital, at £105. Paul Cassidy) Shostakovich String Quartet No.8 in C minor, Op.110 Schubert String Quintet in C, D956 Since forming in 1972, the Brodsky Quartet have performed over 3,000 concerts on the major stages of the world and have released more than 70 recordings. They took their name from the great Russian violinist Adolf Brodsky. Now celebrating their 50th anniversary, they enjoy a busy international performing schedule, and have extensively toured the major festivals and venues throughout Australasia, North and South America, Asia, South Africa and Europe, as well as in the UK, where the quartet is based. Their prominent presence on the international chamber music scene has been ensured by their never-ending energy and craftsmanship which has also attracted numerous awards and accolades worldwide. The Brodsky Quartet have always had a busy recording career and currently enjoy an exclusive and fruitful relationship with Chandos Records. Releases on the label include Petits Fours – a celebratory album of ‘Encore’ pieces arranged exclusively by the quartet for their 40th anniversary – the complete quartets of Shostakovich recorded live, the Elgar String Quartet and Piano Quintet with Martin Roscoe, and Rocking Horse Road, a celebration of their long-standing collaboration with Jacqui Dankworth. Their album of the Late String Quartets of Beethoven was released to coincide with their performance of the repertoire at Kings Place. Recently signed to Chandos Records with her first album Pohádka released in March 2022, Laura van der Heijden has emerged as one of the leading cellists of her generation, captivating audiences and critics alike with her deeply perceptive interpretations and engaging stage presence. A graduate of St John’s College, Cambridge, she plays a late 17th-century cello by Francesco Ruggieri of Cremona, on generous loan from a private collection. 4
Thursday 27 October 2022 7.30pm Roderick Williams baritone Susie Allan piano A Birthday Celebration for Ralph Vaughan Williams Roderick Williams is one of the most sought after baritones of his generation with a wide repertoire spanning baroque to contemporary which he performs in opera, concert and recital. He enjoys relationships with all the major UK opera houses and has sung opera world premières by David Sawer, Sally Beamish, Michel van der Aa, Robert Saxton and Alexander Knaifel as well as performing major roles including Papageno, Don Alfonso, Onegin and Billy Budd. Roderick performs regularly with leading conductors and orchestras throughout the UK, Europe, North America and Australia, and his many festival appearances include the BBC Proms, Edinburgh, Cheltenham, Aldeburgh, Three Choirs and Melbourne. As a composer he has had works premièred at Wigmore Hall, the Barbican, the Purcell Room and on national radio. In December 2016 he won the prize for Best Choral Composition at the British Composer Awards. Roderick Williams was awarded an OBE in June 2017. He is President of Malvern Concert Club. Susie Allan, one of today’s most perceptive collaborative pianists, has performed with international vocal soloists including Emma Bell, Susan Gritton, Rowan Pierce, Jonathan McGovern and Mark Padmore. She has accompanied masterclasses of Sir Thomas Allen, Elly Ameling and Roger Vignoles at the Britten-Pears School. She has held posts at the Royal College of Music and Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, and adjudicated for the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire’s English Song Prize. In a collaboration with baritone Roderick Williams that has spanned over twenty years they perform across the UK and internationally and have recorded for BBC Radio 3. In 2022 for the 150th anniversary of Ralph Vaughan Williams the duo perform at the Wigmore Hall, the British Library, Bath Mozart Fest and Malvern Concert Club. On their third disc for the SOMM label comprising Arthur Somervell songs Gramophone magazine commented ‘Superbly partnered by Susie Allan (whose deft touch and ingratiating tone are a constant source of pleasure)’. 5
Thursday 24 November 2022 7.30pm Trio Wanderer Vincent Coq piano Jean-Marc Phillips-Varjabédian violin Raphaël Pidoux cello Beethoven Piano trio No.5, Op.70 No.1 in D, Ghost Liszt Tristia, S.723 Saint-Saëns Piano trio No.2 in E minor, Op.92 One of the leading piano trios of the world, the Trio Wanderer celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2017. Acclaimed for its sensitivity, its technical mastery and the breadth of its repertoire, the Trio has performed on the most prestigious international music stages, including Vienna’s Musikverein, London’s Wigmore Hall, New York’s Frick Museum, Washington’s Library of Congress, the Teatro alla Scala, Milan, and the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam. Festivals in which they have played include Edinburgh, Montreux, the Schubertiade, La Roque d’Anthéron, Les Folles Journées, Osaka and Salzburg. In addition to working in chamber music with many major international artists, including the baritone Wolfgang Holzmair, they have on many occasions collaborated with renowned orchestras and conductors including Sir Yehudi Menuhin, Charles Dutoit and James Conlon, playing double and triple concertos by composers such as Beethoven and Martinu. All the members of the Wanderer Trio graduated from the National Music Conservatory of Paris. They studied with such distinguished musicians as Menahem Pressler, the Amadeus Quartet and the Beaux Arts Trio and won the ARD International Chamber Music Competition in 1988 and, in 1990, the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition in the USA. Their interest in contemporary music has led to premieres of works by composers including Thierry Escaich and Bruno Mantovani. They have released numerous recordings and now primarily record for Harmonia Mundi, for whom they have recorded works by composers including Chausson, Ravel, Schubert, Haydn, Shostakovich, Copland, Beethoven, Saint-Saëns, Brahms, Messiaen, Dvorak, Smetana, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky and Mendelssohn. Their recordings have won many prizes, includings Diapaisons d’Or, the Midem International Classical Music Award and, three times, the Victoire de la Musique Award for Best Instrumental Ensemble of the Year. 6
Thursday 26 January 2023 7.30pm The Piatti Quartet Michael Trainor violin Rebecca Chan violin Tetsuumi Nagata viola Jessie Ann Richardson cello Vaughan Williams Three Preludes (from Household Music) Mendelssohn String Quartet No.1 in E flat, Op.12 Beethoven String Quartet No.7 in F, Op.59, No.1, Razumovsky The Piatti Quartet are one of the most distinguished quartets of their generation. Prize-winners at the 2015 Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition, they have performed in all the major venues and festivals around the UK, and given concerts throughout the world. The Piattis are renowned for their diverse programming and for passionate interpretations across the spectrum of quartet writing. They are particularly known for expanding the quartet genre through their collaborations with leading British composers. Recent recordings include discs of works by Vaughan Williams (Hyperion) and Gavin Higgins. Their premiere of a new string quartet by Emily Howard at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw in April 2021 (a Concertgebouw co- commission) was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Quartet previously commissioned Joseph Phibbs’s String Quartet No.1 and released a disc for the Champs Hill label featuring this work alongside the premiere recording of Mark Anthony Turnage’s Twisted Blues with Twisted Ballad, with classics by Britten and Bridge. Other current commissions and recent premieres include new works by Mark Anthony Turnage (having premiered his fourth string quartet, Winter’s Edge, at the Klarafestival, Brussels in 2019), Darren Bloom, Simon Holt, Freya Waley-Cohen and Jacques Cohen. At the 2015 Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition, the Piatti Quartet won 2nd Prize as well as the St. Lawrence SQ prize and the Sidney Griller Award for the best performance of Mark-Anthony Turnage’s Contusion. The Piatti Quartet takes its name from the great 19th-century cellist Alfredo Piatti, who was a leading professor and exponent of chamber music at the Royal Academy of Music. 7
Sunday 12 February 2023 3.00pm Elisabeth Brauss piano Bach/Marcello Concerto in D, BWV 974 Mendelssohn Variations sérieuses Hindemith In einer Nacht Op.15 Beethoven Sonata No.30 in E, Op.109 Liszt Dante Sonata The pianist Elisabeth Brauss has been praised by Gramophone Magazine for ‘the maturity and sophistication of her thoughtful interpretations’ which ‘would be the pride of any pianist twice her age’. As a member of the BBC New Generation Artists Scheme, Elisabeth had many solo, chamber and concerto engagements across the UK. In 2021 she made her debut at the BBC Proms, performing Mozart with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra. In a new partnership between this scheme and the Hallé Orchestra, she was recently announced as recipient of the Terence Judd-Hallé Award, given to a NGA graduate considered to be on the cusp of a major international career. In recent seasons, Elisabeth has made her debut with the Hallé Orchestra, Staatsphilharmonie Nürnberg and Göttinger Symphonie Orchester, and has also performed with the BBC Symphony, BBC Scottish Symphony and Ulster Orchestras. In addition were dates with Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, NDR Radiophilharmonie Hannover and Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra in her native Germany. During the 2021/22 season Elisabeth’s solo performance venues have included Cologne, London (Wigmore Hall) and Hamburg, participating in Max Richter’s Reflektor Festival at the Elbphilharmonie. She enjoys playing chamber music and has appeared with the violinist Noa Wildschut throughout Europe, including at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and Philharmonie Halls in both Paris and Cologne. This season their engagements include the Young Artists Series promoted by San Francisco Symphony. Elisabeth also works regularly with the trumpet player Simon Höfele, with whom she will be touring to promote their recent release New Standards. 8
Thursday 23 March 2023 7.30pm The Calidore Quartet Jeffrey Myers violin Ryan Meehan violin Jeremy Berry viola Estelle Choi cello Mozart String Quartet No.17 in B flat, K.458 The Hunt Widmann String Quartet No.3 Jagdquartett Dvorak String Quartet No.14 in A flat, Op.105 The Calidore String Quartet was founded in 2010 at the Colburn School in Los Angeles. Within two years the quartet had won prizes in virtually all the major US chamber music competitions, including the Fischoff, Coleman, Chesapeake, and Yellow Springs. It also captured top prizes at the 2012 ARD International Music Competition in Munich and the International Chamber Music Competition, Hamburg. As passionate supporters of music education, the Calidore are committed to mentoring and educating young musicians, students and audiences. The Calidore serves as Quartet-in-Residence at the University of Delaware and the University of Toronto. It has conducted master classes and residencies at Princeton, Stanford, the University of Michigan, the Colburn School, Stony Brook University, UCLA, and Mercer University. Recipient of a 2017 Lincoln Centre Award for Emerging Artists and a 2018 Avery Fisher Career Grant, the Calidore Quartet first made international headlines as winner of the $100,000 Grand Prize of the 2016 M-Prize Chamber Arts Competition. The quartet was the first North American ensemble to win the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship and recently had a period as BBC New Generation Artists. In summer 2021, the Calidore made debuts at the Sarasota, La Jolla and Saratoga Music Festivals as well as the Schubert Club of St. Paul, MN. Highlights of the 2021-22 season have included returns to Wigmore Hall, Alice Tully Hall and the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society. Other highlights of recent seasons have been performances in major venues throughout North America, Europe, and Asia such as Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall, Kennedy Center, Berlin Konzerthaus, Brussels BOZAR, Cologne Philharmonie, Seoul’s Kumho Arts Hall, and at significant festivals including the BBC Proms, Verbier, Ravinia, Mostly Mozart, Music@Menlo, Rheingau, East Neuk, and Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. 9
Friday 14 April 2023 10.30 for 11.15am COFFEE AND CAKE CONCERT Toby White cello J S Bach Suite for solo cello No.3 in C Reger Suite for solo cello Op.131 No.1 in G Hindemith Sonata for solo cello Op.25 No.3 Born in Ripon, North Yorkshire, Toby enjoys a busy and varied career as both soloist and chamber musician. He completed his studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in the class of Louise Hopkins, graduating in 2019 with an Artist Diploma. In January 2019 Toby was selected for the Tillett Young Artists Platform and made his Wigmore hall debut in October that year as part of the scheme. He continues to perform regularly as a recitalist and soloist throughout the UK. Highlights from last season include returning to his native North Yorkshire for a recital for the Darlington Music Society and performing at the Lichfield Festival, joining the European Union Chamber Orchestra for a performance of Haydn Cello Concerto No.1 at the Kings Lynn Festival and appearing at the North York Moors Chamber Music summer festival with the Jubilee Quartet, of which he has been a member since 2017. Toby has been a grateful recipient of many awards throughout his young career including the Help Musicians UK Fleming Award and grants from the Pierre Fournier and Leverhulme Trusts. Toby was the holder of the Karl Motesiczky Scholarship from 2017 to 2019 and was a Worshipful Company of Musicians award holder in 2017-18. Toby plays on a modern cello made by Paul Collins c.2013. 10

It has taken her to venues all over the world. She grew up in London and her career was launched when at the age of 17 she won the BBC Young Musician of the Year Competition, followed by the Young Concert Artists Auditions in New York. She has made some 30 recordings to date; her album English Fantasy has been streamed 3 million times on Spotify whilst Voyage and The Mozart Album both reached the top of the classical charts. A passionate advocate of the clarinet as a solo instrument, Emma has commissioned new works from composers such as Sir John Dankworth, Sir Michael Berkeley and Jonathan Dove. She also enjoys giving concerts with her own group, Emma Johnson and Friends and is known for her eclectic programming, which has ranged from Mozart with Sir Yehudi Menuhin to Klezmer at the Jazz Café and Jazz with Dame Cleo Laine. Emma Johnson’s compositions and arrangements have been published by Chesters and Faber Music. Her composition for clarinet and choir, Songs of Celebration, was recently performed in Dublin, London and Tokyo and a series of new works have been published by Queen’s Temple Publishing. Emma studied Music and English at Cambridge University and was the first woman to be made an Honorary Fellow of Pembroke College. In 2020 she received the Cobbett Medal from the Musicians’ Company Guild in the City of London for distinguished services to chamber music. She was honoured by the Queen with an MBE in 1996. She plays a clarinet by the English instrument maker, Peter Eaton. 11
Where our concerts are held The Forum Theatre, Malvern Theatres, Grange Road, Malvern WR14 3HB The Thursday evening series and the Sunday concert The Theatres From their origin in 1885, Malvern Theatres have undergone many changes, and are now a modern, attractive and dynamic centre for the performing arts. The Forum Theatre is the main auditorium for musical performance; its flexible space and largely tiered seating offer excellent acoustics, visibility and comfort. As configured in normal circumstances, the Forum accommodates around 600. For opening hours, and availability of refreshments etc, please refer to Malvern Theatres. See page 3 for contact details. Access Malvern Theatres welcome people with disabilities and are committed to ensuring that your visit is easy, enjoyable and straightforward. Please advise the box office if you need any special assistance. Wheelchair spaces are available in the Forum Theatre. Other areas are accessible to wheelchairs and there are WC facilities on all levels. Elmslie House, 8 Avenue Road, Malvern WR14 3AG Friday 22 April 2022 at 10.30 for 11.15am Elmslie House was built as ‘Falston’ in 1862 by the architect E W Elmslie for his own family use. In later life the building was a school, and had associations with Elgar and Troyte Griffith. It now hosts classes, art exhibitions and concerts, including what will be the third of the Club’s successful Coffee and Cake Concerts, this time a performance by Toby White (cello). Seating (all unreserved) is limited to 80. The ticket price includes refreshments before the concert, kindly provided by Anna Taylor, the owner of Elmslie House. Please bear in mind that this is a family home and therefore not open at all times. For some years the Club has organised coach visits from Malvern to selected concerts by the CBSO and other orchestras at Symphony Hall, Birmingham. Participation is open to all, whether Club members or not. If you were on the mailing list in 2021-22 you will automatically receive details.
