Sun City Texas Issue 4 | Volume 7 | 2021 Pickleball Club CLUB ANNOUNCEMENTS TREASURER'S REPORT SUBMITTED BY ALLIE BOWER SCTPC: Febr u ar y 2021 Fin an cial Syn opsis The Club began the month of February with a cash balance of $19,375. Income totaled $720, all from renewed or new memberships. Expenses totaled $159; training-$42, court cameras-$77, and miscellaneous administrative supplies and printing-$40. We ended with a monthly net income of $561 and a cash balance of $19,936. Paid 2021 members through February totaled 909. Drop Serve: Love it or Leave it ? As you?re probably aware, a new provisional rule went into effect, starting in January 2021, to permit players to use a ?drop serve? in addition to the standard pickleball serve. This new drop serve rule will be ?legal? until at least January 2022. USA Pickleball is now in the process of determining the pros and cons of keeping the new pickleball serve in effect, adding additional parameters to the drop serve rule, or eliminating it completely. I?m serving on a USAP Ambassador subcommittee to evaluate these options. If you have an opinion about the new drop serve (Are you using it a lot? Do you love it? Has it helped your game? Do you think it?s ridiculous and should be abolished? Etc.), please feel free to email me and let me know your thoughts - bar bpat t er 1@gm ail.com . Thanks in advance! Sun City Texas Issue 4 | Volume 7 | 2021 Pickleball Club TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT Submitted by Liz Blount One of the goals of the Club?s Novice Supervised Play Program, is to provide an environment for our newest players to network with others so they can go out and play on their own. I can tell you, from my perspective as a player getting ready to graduate from the program, it?s working. We have a group of women, currently in Novice Supervised Play, who discovered we enjoy playing together. I decided to make a list for us, so that when we graduate from Novice Play, we won?t lose touch. We named the group the ?Call Girls!? - who to call on the list for extra players! Currently, there are 31 ?Call Girls? and that number is growing. Everyone involved has enjoyed being on the list and we owe it all to the many volunteers Call Girls: Liz Blount, Mary Schreitmueller, Donnell Burns, Vun Ziegler, who support the novice program. Sun City Texas Issue 4 | Volume 7 | 2021 Pickleball Club VOLUNTEERS OF THE MONTH Nominated by Kathy Carr, Director of Player Development Our M ar ch 2021 Volu n t eer s of t h e M on t h w er e Ch ar lie Hagen , Pat Gar r en , Lyn n An der son , an d J.D. Caven . They were recognized for their support and contributions to the Club?s Beginner ?s Mentoring and Novice Supervised Play Programs. As coaches they conduct warm up drills, evaluate and provide feedback on player performance, and provide guidance to reinforce the players? understanding of the rules, scoring, and court positioning. Ch ar lie Hagen - M ar ch 2021 I was introduced to pickleball in Sun City when Marcelle and I moved here from Chattanooga in May, 2015. We met many new friends at the courts. And many were willing to help me with my game. I got into instructing and mentoring when the original Beginner ?s Mentoring Program started. Previous experience as a certified US Soccer Federation referee, referee instructor, and referee assessor provided a lot of useful translatable instructor training and experience. I enjoy helping others learn and improve in a sport I enjoy. I hope that they also will enjoy the fun, fitness, and friendships that are the hallmark of Sun City pickleball. Volunteeri ng i s a w ork of heart. 8
Sun City Texas Issue 4 | Volume 7 | 2021 Pickleball Club VOLUNTEERS OF THE MONTH Pat Gar r en - M ar ch 2021 A Texas native, Pat, and with his wife Petra, returned after 35 years of service with the Army and Department of Defense. Over the course of Pat?s career, he resided in 12 states and 3 overseas countries. Pat followed his dream to teach after retiring and taught High School at Huntsville, Texas. Moving to Sun City over 5 years ago, both Pat and Petra have been active with the Horticulture Club, the Firewise Group, and the Hiking Club. They also enjoy being able to spend time with their two daughters and two grandchildren. Here, Pat found his real passion with his Pickleball family. He receives his greatest enjoyment and excitement mentoring first time players and watching them improve; playing with all skill capabilities and personalities; and sometimes getting less than three points when playing more advanced players. Pat has a strong personal need to offer his time and effort to ?give back? for the great adventure he has been provided over the last 5 years. 9
Sun City Texas Issue 4 | Volume 7 | 2021 Pickleball Club VOLUNTEERS OF THE MONTH Lyn n An der son - M ar ch 2021 In the fall of 2015, I moved to Sun City from Eden Prairie, Minnesota. I had played very little pickleball in Minnesota, but once in Sun City, it was high on my list to learn how to play. I took the beginner class and with all the instructors? positive comments, I was hooked. Not that I was that good of a player, but that is how encouraging the instructors were. After playing with other beginners that I met in my beginner training class for a year, I decided I needed to venture playing with other players who were better than I was. So, I put my paddle in the rack (we had the paddle system at the time) and started playing with intermediate players. I was so insecure and felt like I was a weak link. But, once again, the positiveness and encouragement of the other players gave me the confidence to keep playing with them. Now 5 1/2 years later, I am training beginners. I hope the little help that I give them will encourage them to keep playing and improve their pickleball skills. I am retired, but when I was a working lady, I was a substitute teacher for 13 years while my two children, Briana and Tanner, were growing up. Once I was divorced, I managed a group home with 4 ladies with developmental disabilities. I also started my own business in 2011 called Leave it to Lynn, in which I did anything a mom or wife would do for people who either couldn?t do those things for themselves or didn?t want to. My life partner, Lance, and I love to play pickleball, bike, watch sports on TV, travel and enjoy each other ?s company. We are so blessed to live in Sun City and I am happy that I can help out a little bit. In teach in g oth er s, we teach ou r sel ves. 10
Sun City Texas Issue 4 | Volume 7 | 2021 Pickleball Club VOLUNTEERS OF THE MONTH J.D. Caven - M ar ch 2021 I'm from a tiny town called Neodesha, Kansas. After graduating from Kansas State Teachers College (now Emporia University) in 1965, I married Joyce Whitfill. Shortly after our marriage, Uncle Sam came calling and I went through a commissioning program at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. I was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in January 1967 and served for twenty-one years, retiring in 1987. I served in the Air Force as a pilot and then as a Judge Advocate. I flew a plane called the OV-10 Bronco, serving as a Forward Air Controller in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia for three years. My next aircraft was the F-4 which I flew at MacDill AFB, Florida. While at MacDill, I was medically grounded but was fortunate enough to be selected to attend law school. I received my law degree from McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento, CA. My assignments as a JAG included being the Chief Circuit Trial Counsel (a traveling prosecutor), a Chief Circuit Defense Counsel (a traveling defense attorney), and as a Staff Judge Advocate, the senior attorney on a base. We had assignments, either flying or legal, in Texas, Vietnam, the Philippines, Florida, California, and Colorado. Our first assignment was at Bergstrom AFB (now the Austin airport), and we adopted our two children there, a daughter, Jennifer, and a son, David. Jennifer now lives in Germany, while Davis is a little closer in Houston. I lost my wife to cancer in 2014 and moved to Sun City to be closer to my son in 2018. I became interested in indoor sports at Bergstrom AFB where I played squash, handball, and racquetball. I played racquetball my entire Air Force career. We took up tennis in the Philippines and on one assignment lived in a wonderful tennis resort called Blue Water Bay in Niceville, Florida. One of the attractions of Sun City was the variety of clubs and organizations. I am a member of the Aviation Club and a few others. I had never heard of Pickleball until I moved here to Sun City. Fortunately, I live right across the street from the Retreat courts. After watching a few games, I enrolled in the Beginner ?s class. Kathy and her helpers have a great training system and I enjoyed the classes so much that I decided I would try to help teach new players too. I have enjoyed working with people who are new to the sport and hope to continue doing so in the future. 11
Sun City Texas Issue 4 | Volume 7 | 2021 Pickleball Club MATT LAZ - COACH'S CORNER Basic St rat egies When I work with players on strategy I often get the response, "That?s a lot to think about!" You definitely don?t have a lot of time to think when you?re in the midst of a point. So, here are a few basic strategies to take with you to the court to try to work on to improve your game. And I would highly recommend that you only think about one of them at a time. 1. Return the serve higher to allow for more time to move towards the NVZ (No Volley Zone). 2. If you?re at the net and the opposing team is at the baseline, keep them back by volleying each shot back deep. 3. Do not aim for the side lines, give yourself a cushion of several feet. 4. Hit between your opponent. 12
Sun City Texas Issue 4 | Volume 7 | 2021 Pickleball Club A MESSAGE FROM DOUG OLIVER & WILL SAUNDERS Do you find yourself asking, ?How is my pickleball game improving?? - Do I get to the kitchen fast enough? - Do I hit my serves deep enough? - How are my lobs and dinks? - When I hit a volley is it well placed? - What can I do to make myself a better player? Every player in Sun City Pickleball wants to know how to improve their game. It doesn't matter if you just graduated from Novice Training or if you have won gold medals in tournaments, everyone is looking to improve. If you are one of those players, the following might be for you. We're beginning a program which provides candid feedback to interested players who have graduated from Novice Mentoring. Players would need to: - Reserve court time in the normal manner - Have 4 players participate in a session - Invite an appraiser We'll watch and give feedback to each of the 4 players. If this sounds like something you'd like to participate in then contact either - Doug Oliver (doug_oliver@ymail.com) - Will Saunders (alwayswithcolor@suddenlink.net) Initially it will only be Will and Doug, but if we get enough interest we'll expand. ?We're not going to try to teach you how to hit an effective 3rd shot drop or an offensive lob. We're only trying to point out things which could improve your game. There is no cost. Did we mention it was FREE? We're simply trying to grow the skills of the club. To manage the logistics we'll ask participants to download an app on their phone to help us with scheduling. Only one of the players in a group would need the app. Please dir ect an y an d all qu est ion s t o eit h er Dou g or Will u sin g t h e con t act in f or m at ion pr ovided above. 13

We're proud to report that a couple of our very own Sun City, Texas, Club members have received some well-earned recognition for their digital dexterity and consistency. According to HoldMyCourt (HMC) and PickleballOnline.Org (POO), the two governing bodies that jointly award these rankings, our club hadn't previously qualified for national ranking consideration because we had yet to meet the competitive ratio of 10 players per available reservation time slot. Now, with 900+ club members competing for as few as 80 reservation spots per day, we easily surpass that competitive threshold. Hen Ree A chicken enters a library and walks straight up to the librarian on duty. "Buk!" says the chicken. So, the librarian gives the chicken a book. At that, chicken tucks the book under her wing and promptly departs. Five minutes later, the chicken is back. "Buk!" she says. So, the librarian gives the chicken another book. And, again, the chicken turns and leaves, only to return five minutes later. This goes on for eight more times, at which point, the librarian follows the chicken out the door and around to the back of library where the librarian is surprised to see the chicken tossing the books to a frog on a lilly pad. "Buk! Buk!" says the chicken. "Reddit! Reddit!" replies the frog. Truly Puzzled submitted by Chuck Flanagan A little silver-haired lady calls her neighbor and says, "Please come over here and help me. I have a killer jigsaw puzzle, and I can't figure out how to get started." Her neighbor asks, "What is it supposed to be when it's finished?" The little silver-haired lady says, "According to the picture on the box, it's a rooster." Her neighbor decides to go over and help with the puzzle. She lets him in and shows him where she has the puzzle spread all over the table. He studies the pieces for a moment, looks at the box, then turns to her and says, "First of all, no matter what we do, we're not going to be able to assemble these pieces into anything resembling a rooster." He then takes her hand and says, "Secondly, I want you to relax. Let's have a nice cup of tea, and then," he says with a deep sigh....."Let's put all the Corn Flakes back in the box." 19
