Fast Facts Opening: fall 2023 Planned enrollment: 1,200 students School type: K-12 coeducational day school OVERVIEW Brewster Academy, a 200-year-old boarding and day school in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire has long served a cognitively diverse student body effectively using a unique approach to education called the Brewster Model. This research-driven and time-tested model of instruction is characterized by a number of salient features, including a team-based approach, embedded academic support, and mastery- based, multi-leveled collaborative classroom modes that collectively function to effectively serve a broad range of students. Brewster’s vision statement compels school leadership to scale Brewster’s influence of this particular mode of teaching. After two years of careful research in educational markets across the globe, Brewster has selected Madrid, Spain as the site for its first global campus given the clear demand for American-style education and for Brewster’s all-encompassing approach to student-centeredness. Using the Brewster Model as the foundation, the Head of Brewster Madrid will be charged with creating a school from the ground up. They will be provided with a budget fitting the task, along with a broader organizational structure capable of supporting the Head every step of the way. Brewster Madrid is scheduled to open in the fall of 2023. It will be a K-12 day school with an anticipated enrollment of approximately 1,200 students once the school is fully scaled. Ideally, the founding Head will be able to spend all or part of the 2021-22 academic year on the Brewster Academy campus in New Hampshire, serving in a school leadership role while learning about Brewster’s approach to education. The appointee will then transition to Madrid in July 2022 as founding Head of School at Brewster Madrid. CARNEYSANDOE.COM 2

Working collaboratively with the leadership of Brewster Academy, the founding Head will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the Madrid campus. ABOUT BREWSTER ACADEMY Brewster Academy is an intellectually diverse and academically challenging community that nurtures students’ curiosity, confidence, collaboration, and character in preparation for lives of meaning and accomplishment. Brewster’s promise is that each student will receive the right level of support when they need it, and an appropriate level of challenge when they are ready for it. With a bold history of innovation that began in 1820, Brewster currently serves 350 students in grades 9-12 and postgraduate. The school is located in the small idyllic resort town of Wolfeboro, New Hampshire on 80 picturesque acres with a half-mile of lakefront on Lake Winnipesaukee. Students come from 21 countries and 23 states, and 33% receive financial aid. The school has 91 faculty and student-facing staff; 29% have more than 20 years of teaching experience and 36% have been with Brewster for more than a decade. The academic program is renowned for its unique, team-based, student-focused approach to learning called The Brewster Model and a multi-level, mastery-based curriculum that includes Advanced Placement courses. A groundbreaking, grade- specific Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) program is built into the curriculum, and includes diversity, equity, and inclusion topics. Fully integrated academic support and ELL programs are also available. MADRID, SPAIN A modern metropolitan city, Madrid is the capital of Spain, home to the Spanish Royal family and the Spanish Government. With its population of nearly 3.3 million people, it is the country’s largest city. Located in the center of the Iberian Peninsula, Madrid is surrounded by mountains and natural parks. It has traditionally been the hub between different areas of Spain and is therefore connected to all major Spanish cities by train, road, or air. Madrid’s system of public transport is among the best in the world. Madrid’s influence in politics, education, entertainment, environment, media, fashion, science, culture, and the arts all contribute to its status as one of the world’s major global cities. Due to its economic output, high standard of living, and market size, Madrid is considered the major financial center and the leading economic hub of the Iberian Peninsula and of Southern Europe. It hosts the head offices of the vast majority of major Spanish companies, such as Telefónica, IAG, and Repsol. Madrid is a diverse, cosmopolitan city and a popular expat destination; it is consistently recognized as one of Europe’s most livable cities. While Madrid possesses modern infrastructure, it has preserved the look and feel of many of its historic neighborhoods and streets. The city is full of monuments, like the royal palace, the Plaza Mayor, and its many statuettes. The museums Del Prado, Reina Sofia, and Thyssen have some of the most fantastic collections of famous Spanish painters like Velazquez, Goya, Picasso, and Miro. There are regular international concerts, big flea markets, parades, and other activities, as well as an active nightlife. To sport enthusiasts, Madrid can offer everything from skiing (only one hour away by bus) during the winter, to golf all year round, as well as international sporting events from its two world-famous soccer clubs, Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid. An analysis of current K-12 options in Madrid and the environs reveals there is a strong appetite for Brewster’s particular approach to education. Given that Brewster Madrid will be a K-12 school—a clearly-articulated non-negotiable to enter this market—this successful candidate will be charged with superimposing Brewster’s ethos as embodied in The Brewster Model onto a K-12 framework. BREWSTER MADRID – THE BUILDOUT Reporting to a small and devoted group of founding Brewster Madrid board members and supported by the leadership of Brewster Academy International, LLC (the corporate body that functionally connects Brewster Academy Wolfeboro with Brewster Madrid) the founding Head will develop a deep understanding of the culture and practices of Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro either through intensive or extensive work on campus in Wolfeboro with the senior administration during school year 2021-22. Armed with an understanding of Brewster’s approach to education, the Head will hire an initial group of founding senior administrators to lead through the buildout of the curriculum and operational plans. Concurrently, the founding Head will work directly with U.S. and Spanish architectural firms to design and, ultimately, build the home of Brewster Madrid. Thereafter, the founding Head will transition to Madrid for the 2022-23 year in order to lead the marketing and admissions efforts in the recruitment of Brewster Madrid’s first students in what will become a steady buildout of the school over several years. OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES Program: • The founding Head will have the chance to bring a unique style of American education to Madrid, a market that is seeking more and varied opportunities for international education. • The successful candidate will have the opportunity to help translate The Brewster Model to a K-12 environment, expanding and enhancing a time-tested approach to education. Leadership: • The founding Head will be the face of Brewster Madrid, recruiting and leading top notch faculty and administrators. Outreach: • The founding Head will work directly with admissions staff, families, and consultants to meet enrollment goals as Brewster Madrid grows from 150 to 1,200 students over ten years. • The successful candidate will help shape the marketing and branding of a new school offering and translate the unique qualities offered by Brewster Madrid to the Spanish market. Finance: • The founding Head will work closely with representatives from Brewster Academy International and the Brewster Madrid Board to ensure a successful business model for a for-profit school.
