BOP Mustang Owners Club. September 2020 From the President’s Desk Page 1: From the President’s Desk Page 2: Hi All, Your committee Well another month has rolled around and all our planning for what was shaping up to Upcoming Events be the biggest Tri Club run ever, dashed thanks to Covid19. Fortunately the weather Pages 3: played ball and our alternative run to Anzac Cove at Waihi Beach was a great success . History of the Tri Cub Lots a fun, great to see everyone eager to join in the activities, and enjoying each others Run company. Just a Word from our For me and I am sure for most of you, one of the main reasons to belong to a Club of VP any sort is to be able to interact with like minded people, and we have some very inter- Page 4-8: esting characters in our Club. So I urge you all, mix, mingle step outside your comfort August Club Run to zone and talk to that member that you haven’t chatted to before, that is why you Athenree joined, remember, at least you know you will have one thing in common, Mustangs. Page 9: Well done Wayne and Jennie from Taupo, who drove home with two of the prizes on Convention 2020 their first outing with the club. Convention 2021 Well it is also looking like the Henry Ford Day which was to have been our club run for Page 10: September could be cancelled. With this cancellation being a strong possibility, we have decided to move the Club run to Sunday the 20th of September, this will give those who Shelby’s Kiwi V8 still want to go to the Henry Ford Day on the 13th September the opportunity to attend Page 11: should it still proceed. After a few urgent phone calls we have managed to secure ac- Club Man Cave cess to the Ross Brothers Muscle Car Museum in Cambridge for our 20th September run. This is a private car, vintage trucks and machinery collection that is not opened to the general public, but will be opened for our Club to visit. Three years ago we visited the museum and it was a hit with everyone that attended. This time due to Covid 19 we will not able to have our lunch at the Cambridge Golf Club, but thankfully the Ross Both- ers have agreed to let us have a picnic at the museum, with tea and coffee available on site. Well that’s all from me, happy motoring. Cheers Darrell

History of the Tri Club Run Story by Margaret Broadbent With the cancellation of this year’s Tri Club Run, I got to thinking about the history of this run. It started as best as I can tell in 2010. At the time I was serving on the AMOC committee as Events Coordinator and felt that it would be a good idea to get the three clubs together once a year at some sort of mid point for all 3 clubs. Fortunately, all 3 clubs agreed and so was born the annual Tri Club run. Unfortunately, at this point we have not been able to hold this year’s run, which was our turn to run, due to Covid restrictions. Some things you just can’t control. Had it gone it ahead, it would have been by far the biggest with around 120 cars and the thick end of 250 people scheduled to attend. So far, and again as best as I can tell after trawling through both AMOC and BoPMOC news- letters, this is where each run has gone: 2010 Miranda Hot Pools 2011 Raglan—who could forget those hangi lunches! 2012 Bowentown 2013 Okoroire 2014 Sapphire Springs 2015 Whangamata 2016 Matamata 2017 Gordonton 2018 Waiuku 2019 Matamata 2020 Covid cancellation—would have been Waihi Beach and huge! Just a Word We recently had a resignation of a relatively new family membership where the resigning members cited (amongst other things) that they overheard someone saying that their Mus- tang which was body kitted & badged “was not of course the real thing or as labelled” I guess we do need to be quite careful when & how we might “critique” another member’s “pride & joy” & to always put a positive & complimentary view when discussing an opinion about a car in public areas or at a park up. While some of us are fairly thick skinned & can take it on the chin & fire one back in fun with no offence taken, we do need to remember that members of our club can be like family members & take offence easily or are having a bad hair day for who knows what reason! We are getting some very positive feedback on the club wellbeing so let’s all keep making this great club an enjoyable & fun association, a place where we can look forward to being with people who do make us feel wanted, appreciated & come away feeling better for the days experience. On that note, we thoroughly enjoyed our day at Anzac Bay, great weather, brilliant company, a lot of fun & a good drive, just what the doctor ordered after the disappointment of what we had to cancel. Thanks to the organizing team & everyone who came to have some fun! We actually got another family membership application on the day as well! Cheers & can’t wait to roll the roof back & cruise again! Club Run to Athenree Story by Margaret Broadbent Pictures by Phillipa Tapp and Paul Bloxham With the Tri Club run cancelled due to the Covid levels, the committee decided that we could still have a run for our club. And that thought was quickly followed by the one that we shouldn’t let a lot of very good planning go to waste and so Charles quickly recycled the Tri Club run into something we could make work for us. We gathered at Tauranga Crossing and made our way via Katikati and Waihi Beach to Athenree, picking up some others along the way—from memory (which isn’t all it once was!!) I think there were around 30 cars. We parked up at Athenree on the reserve area and got into the games straight away. First up it was driving closest to the cone for the ladies, and driving to a metre away for the men—with some interesting results in both categories. After that we had 2 games running in tandem—balancing 3 tennis balls on a racket while running up to the bucket where they had to be all dropped in—try it, it isn’t at all easy! As well there was a game of quoits running. It has been many years since I attempted quoits and my results certainly reflected that! Games over, we gathered in a big circle for our picnic lunches. I never knew there quite so many ways to make bacon and egg pie! Perhaps that is an idea for some future event—a bacon and egg pie-off! As is our norm, then came the prizes for the day—and the winners were: Pre 2000 Kevin Uncles Post 2000 Wayne Hills Dipstick Ray Sperling Closest to the cone—Women Jeannie Duffy—one of our new members—way to make a splash, Jeannie! Closest to a metre from the cone—Men Paul Mills Tennis Balls—Jeannie Duffy—again for the women. And Adam Tapp for the men There was a special award for the most glamourous run to the bucket in the tennis balls comp and that went to our illustrious Secretary, Philippa Lewis who indeed did it in style! I think it fair to say that we all had a wonderful day with a good number of our club mem- bers in attendance. It is looking like Covid may disrupt our plans for the September run but in our club we don’t let little things like that put us off. We are working on a run as we speak and by the time you receive this it will be ready for publication. As always—evidence in pictorial style follows.
Convention 2020 CMOC have been in touch with the Club, and Philippa has passed the message on, that they are waiting again for advice re Covid levels before they can confirm that Convention can go ahead. A very trying time for them. At this stage, about all we can do is assume it will go ahead and plan accordingly. We will have 17 cars to represent our club. Philippa will create an email group and a phone list so that communication is maintained before and while we are away. Vicki and Gillian are poised ready to hit the go button on ordering our costumes for Sun- day night—again just waiting for the covid levels to allow us to go ahead. Remember these are compulsory wear on Sunday night—and the Club is footing the bill for them. Also compulsory wear at Convention are club shirts on the Friday night and Monday morn- ing. Cars must have club sashes for the Saturday car show. CMOC always put on a great Convention and BoPMOC are very good at enjoying our- selves, so roll on the good times! Convention 2021 Convention 2021 Committee Assistance: Further to the request in last month’s newsletter, we have had no response from anyone willing to take on the role of Show Day Coordination. We really do need someone to step and help out with this key role. Please consider it and get in touch if you feel you are able to help. There is much support already in place so you don’t have to fly alone! The 2021 Convention Committee currently looks like this: Grant Robb: Convener/planning Dave Flett: Sponsors, trade stands, guests Julie Flett: Treasurer Margaret Broadbent: Administration coordinator Paul Stops: Cruise Day coordinator We are now looking for someone to oversee Show Day Coordination. This will involve working with me to complete the last of the planning with the show venue managers and then to complete fine tuning to draft in helpers to complete the various tasks that will need doing on the day. 90% of planning/organizing has been completed. I would antici- pate a couple of meetings with arena management later this year and then may 3-4 meet- ings during next year. I can provide more details to anyone interested in this appointment. We will also later be looking for a Functions Coordinator to complete our committee but more on that in the New Year (early 2021)
From the NZ Herald’s Driven column: Shelby's new Kiwi V8: stunning Ford Mustang con- firmed for our shores There's yet another new contender on the block for Kiwis thirsty for rear-wheel drive V8 thrills. Shelby New Zealand has confirmed a new model in its stable (ha, horse pun) in the form of the limited edition Carroll Shelby Signature Edition Mustang. Apart from sporting a thick array of visual fruit, like a full Shelby body-kit, 20-inch forged monobloc wheels, and oodles of Shelby badging, the Signature Edition also features a hefty power upgrade and some clever trickery for improving handling. Under the bonnet, Ford's 5.0-litre Coyote V8 gains a meaty 276kW of power, making for a toal of 615kW. This is via the addition of a supercharger, a Borla exhaust package, and other adjustments made by the Shelby team. The big power injection is supported by Shelby's handling pack, and a wider track to aid stability and allow for thicker rubber. It's worth noting too that the wider track is made possible with a set of lightweight aluminium wings and fenders all round. Apart from performance, the Signature Edition also sports a bevy of interior upgrades; from revised leather upholstery to new sill plates and a barrage of signature insignias on the dash, floor mats, and more. Just 50 Carroll Shelbey Signature Edition Mustangs are being produced worldwide, with New Zealand getting an allocation of three. Those wanting to order one have until June 30 to make themselves known. Pricing hasn't been confirmed, but expect it to be well into the six-figure range. Shelby confirmed its New Zealand adoption in late 2019, as another option for current and future Mustang owners wanting something extra to separate their pony car for the next. “The even better news for New Zealand Shelby fans is that the cars, parts, accessories and merchandise will not only be offered directly from our Matamata premises, but also via a number of selected Ford dealers throughout NZ,” said Ross Prevette, Operations and Sales Manager for Shelby NZ. “Shelby has been recognised globally as the premium upgrade for Ford Mustangs since 1965, and 55 years later the iconic brand still remains very much in a class of its own,” added company owner Malcolm Sankey.
