TALTAC NEWSLETTER- FEBRUARY 2021 Email: taltac@xtra.co.nz 03PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2020
What a ride!!!!2020 has proven to be a challenging time for us all. And yet there is nowhere else
in the world that I would rather be at present than Aotearoa New Zealand. The horror stories
coming from friends in the United States, Italy, the United Kingdom and South Africa make me
appreciate how lucky we are to be able to socialise freely and enjoy travelling to special places
to fish. Thank you to all of the club members who have been so accommodating and gracious on
the occasions when we have had to close the club facilities or limit who could stay.
In February 2020 COVID19 seemed to be a problem that advanced from China to the rest of
the world in a very short space of time. I recall a friend in Italy sharing with me the fact that
health professionals had resorted to wearing black rubbish bags as part of their PPE as they
had run out of the real thing. Our geographic isolation and courageous decisions made “at the
top” saved us from that pathway. I must thank members of the TALTAC management committee
for having the courage to close the club facility, when needed, during the pandemic. We had
some robust discussions during our Zoom meetings and eventually came to a consensus view
on the pathway forward . We are definitely not out of the woods yet and I recommend that club
members take the opportunity to be vaccinated against COVID19 when the vaccine becomes
available. Until then , stay away from the club if you are ill with a respiratory tract infection, have
been in contact with a person with COVID recently or have recently been overseas. Please
attempt to ensure social distancing and regularly clean shared surfaces.
The COVID pandemic almost paled into insignificance when Mary announced that she would be
resigning as club manager/secretary. After 21 years in the role , both she and Tom have made the
move to Whangarei to be closer to family and medical help as health issues become more of a
challenge. Both Mary and Tom have been an essential part of the TALTAC family for many years
and , as a team , have kept the club in a good state. It was more than a job and they both went
way beyond what was required .. We are eternally indebted to them for their commitment. Good
luck to both on the new chapter of their lives . We will miss you!!!
Welcome to our new secretary/administrator, Olwyn McNickle. She comes to us with a financial
and resort management background and I am sure that she and husband, John, will be a great
asset to the club. She may be contacted through the club email at taltac@xtra.co.nz.
The club finances have proven to be more resilient than we feared at the beginning of the
COVID pandemic. Thanks to the Ministry of Social Development for paying staff salaries during
the lockdown. The Committee made a decision to holds off on some non-urgent maintenance
projects [ e.g decking for the main club house, repair of the fence beside the cottage, building
permanent seating around the barbecue and kitting out the new shed [ for new shed please read
container]. Changes to the Resource Management Act have now occurred and we are able to
progress making the container a more permanent fixture.
Thank you to Herb Spannagl for making his book on advanced fly casting and line mending for
New Zealand available to club members at no cost. While I haven’t yet read the book, a number
of club members have commented on how valuable it has been to them.
As if COVID19 and Mary leaving weren’t bad enough, we now have the spectre of Fish
and Game New Zealand reviewing their opposition to commercial trout farming. There has
4 TALTAC NEWSLETTER- FEBRUARY 2021 Email: taltac@xtra.co.nzbeen some interesting research published by the Department of Conservation , confirming international research , on the increased mortality when fish are caught and landed when the water temperature is higher than 20 degrees Celsius . The recommendation from DOC is that we should not be fishing in Lake O when the water temperature exceeds 20 degrees Celsius. This has implications for other trout waters in New Zealand. I must thank the Committee for the sterling work over the previous 12 months. We have had some robust discussions over the year but did manage to reach decisions that the Committee were happy to live with. There is an awful lot of work that goes on behind the scenes to keep the club in a good state and Committee members give freely of their time to facilitate this. Sincere thanks to you all. Thank you to Michael Cheyne and John Billing for their sage advice and hard work. Our condolences to John for the recent sad loss of his life partner [ Maree Billing ] who passed away on 20th January 2021. John has still managed to review the Tongariro and Lake Taupo financial statements for the year ended 31 December 2020. These are attached with the latest newsletter. A sincere thank you from the Committee. Tight lines!!! Tom Watson TALTAC NEWSLETTER- FEBRUARY 2021 Email: taltac@xtra.co.nz 5

TONGARIRO & LAKE TAUPO ANGLERS CLUB
INCORPORATED, TURANGI
Review report
For the year ended 31 December 2020
John Billing's, Reviewer, report to the Tongariro and Lake Taupo Anglers
Club Incorporated.
I have reviewed the financial statements on pages 2 to 5 of the Tongariro
& Lake Taupo Anglers Club Incorporated for the year ended 31 December
2020 in accordance with the Review Engagement Standards issued by the
Institute of Chartered Accountants of New Zealand.
A review is primarily limited to enquiries of club personnel and analytical
review procedures applied to financial data and thus provides less
assurance than an audit. I have not performed an audit and, accordingly,
I do not express an audit opinion.
Based on my review, nothing has come to my attention that causes me to
believe that the accompanying financial statements which have been
prepared using the historical cost method modified by the revaluation of
certain assets do not give a true and fair view.
